Nick Gibbs

Nick was born from music, carved from it from his earliest days.

There was never a quiet moment when Nick was growing up. His father, a guitarist and avid record collector in pop and soul and rock music’s most fertile eras, his mother an enthusiastic listener. The young singer, guitarist and curious being had no choice but to fill his ears with the rich tapestries of Jethro Tull, the heart-soaring melodies of Stevie Wonder and the raw dance-right-now physicality of early Michael Jackson. He swallowed whole the inner siren of Joni Mitchell and internalised the eternally fearless Bob Marley… a broad palette to draw from when the young artist started to sing, write and play in bands.

Later on, a girl in his class said he had a nice voice. This was enough of a push to make him take the first tentative steps toward becoming a singer… and he’s never stopped developing his craft, studying music for many years and now teaching students of all walks of life how to find their own voice.

He happily found love with the most beautiful girl, a girl he seduced with a song he wrote when they were studying together at Southern Cross University in the “Rainbow Region” of New South Wales. His ode to the “angel from number 22” led to a happy family in Germany… and the emotional journey he’s taken, through love, fatherhood, family… you can hear in his music, and relate to – anyone who’s really felt happy, who’s really dived into love and surrendered.

One of the early bands Nick was a part of won a renowned band competition in Australia, Triple J Unearthed. Though the band wasn’t meant to be, it stoked a fire for music that has never stopped burning, and was another step forward for a musician that believes in depths, and atmospheres, and the simple pleasure of well-crafted pop music.

Nick explored ballet and modern dance, rave and hip hop culture throughout his teen years and pursued a university education in dance, in the process discovering music composition was more interesting and true to his heart than choreography . On his first EP, you will hear music that is made for stamping and joy, physical music that defies rational thought and thumps right through the heart.

With a voice that could fill the coldest wretch with glee, Nick, like early great mother of an inspiration, the mighty Björk, sings with his whole soul on his sleeve… it’s love, but not a wretched love… the sunny, unconditional love for a soulmate, for a child, for a summer’s day laced with old hip hop, the smell of the sea, smiling, sonorous delirium.
