"A Little Music Goes A Long Way"

It’s a true fact that musicians have more fun. Durham College student and becoming solo artist Nick Glover can prove that fact. Glover is a first year student in the college’s Music Business Management program, and already he has quite a tremendous amount of experience in the field.
Music blares in the background of the cafeteria, courtesy of Durham College’s Riot Radio. Clad in his everyday street wear of jeans, polo shirt and hoodie, Glover is calm and relaxed without a hint of nervousness in his wide hazel eyes. He is used to being in front of people, both on and off the stage, and even in front of a camera. The Music Business Management program has given him more knowledge and confidence in the field of music and has bettered him both as a person and as a musician. Not only has he had the pleasure of organizing shows for bands, but he has also had the enjoyment of learning to better himself as an artist as well.

“The program is pretty much about basically the whole administration part of the music business and basically all the different fields you can get into, like basically management, or you can get into radio, and stuff like that,” says Glover of his program. “Myself, I work for breakthrough events and frontline artist management,” explains Glover. “I’ve been able to put on events, such as, there was an On Burning Shores concert that went on not that long ago at EP’s. Actually, we’re going to be putting on the Riot Radio breakdown concert with Anderson Council. I’ve gotten to do a bunch of different parties and stuff at EP Taylor’s. We just actually had the frontline artist man showcase with bands like Subconscious, On Burning Shores was playing that show to. A bunch of different shows.”
Not only has Glover hosted shows in hometown Oshawa, but he also got the opportunity to venture downtown Toronto to help host an award show at the Canadian Music Week function, and even had the pleasure of meeting some of the artists there, such as famous Youtube comedian and songwriter Jon Lajoie.

“We had CMW, which is Canadian Music Week, where basically everyone in the music industry in Canada comes down to the Royal York hotel and there’s conferences. It’s basically one big convention for music. Myself, I ran the award shows and there were four award shows. One was the Crystal Awards, which was basically for radio spots. The next one was the Canadian music industry awards, which was basically like all the people in the industry got together and were awarded for their contributions in the music industry. There was also the Canadian Radio Music Awards, which was basically big radio hits in Canada, and then there was the Indy Awards for the independent artists, which was an awesome show.”

But the fun doesn’t stop there. The yellow Giant Tiger bag on the cafeteria table beside him is for a unique and slightly odd purpose. Glover and his friend Graham Wilcox host a show on Riot Radio called Nick and the Cracker that airs Wednesday nights at five o’clock.

“We pretty much do stupid things all the time for ratings,” explains Glover. “Not long ago, we had the Cracker wax his back on the air. And today we’re going to be having a sardine-eating contest.” Hence the bag full of sardine cans.

On top of all of this, there is still more for the young artist. Glover was in a band called Black Light Opera for a while and the band recorded a CD called “Letters”, which is the name of one of the songs on the album. While in the band, he was working on some solo songs on the side. Glover also started a Youtube account to broadcast his solo acoustic work. Now he has his fame online, reaching out to viewers with his music. With a voice similar to singer Matthew Good and exceptional guitar playing skills, there is no doubt that Nick Glover will go far in the music business.

"Indie Now - Who is Nick Glover?"

Nick Glover, hailing from Oshawa, Ontario, is an indie artist who spends his time writing and recording a heart-felt brand of Indie Folk Pop. Producing lyrics that clearly come from his own experiences throughout his 20-something lifetime, Nick delivers each verse with a deeply emotional vocal performance on each tune he lays upon us. I sat down with Nick in efforts to figure out what's behind his emotional, song-writing prowess.

indie now: Who are your greatest influences musically?
Nick Glover: I've always been into a lot of folky indie bands/musicians. The one man that made me want to pick up the guitar for the first time was Matthew Good. I'd heard Apparations for the first time and it just inspired me to start writing. Also bands like Death Cab for Cutie and Our Lady Peace were huge inspirations for me. Naveed, in my opinion, was one of the best albums of the '90s. I remember hearing it back in elementary school and thinking, "This is the best band I've ever heard." That's when I started thinking seriously about music.

indie now: When did you finally realize you wanted to be a musician?/Have you always wanted to play music growing up?
Nick Glover: "Ever since I was a kid I liked singing and writing. Although, at that point I never let the two coincide with each other. It wasn't until I was 14 when I started hanging around my good friend Matt Sutherland that I started writing music. We ended up writing a song together, the first song I ever wrote called Temple of Mirrors, and it really helped get a lot of things that were bothering me off my chest. Ever since than I just always used music to get tough times and even the good times."

indie now: Who affects you today musically?
Nick Glover: "My friends and family have always been a major impact on my music. Ever since I started writing, I always felt a sense of gratitude from people when they hear me play. Right now I feel as though the people who affect me most though, are the other musicians I hang out with. From playing with them I've adapted somewhat of a variety of different styles that I can play around with."

indie now: What Cd is in your car stereo right now?
Nick Glover: "At the moment I've been really into this new band called "Fun." They're fronted by the former vocalist of The Format and they have this extremely catchy indie rock sound. What really gets me about them is their very instrumental heavy sound with everything from piano, to trumpets and accordions."

indie now: What makes a good musician? What are the unique qualities a person must have to succeed in this field?
Nick Glover: "A good musician must have passion. If you're not passionate in what you're doing or what you're playing, than why are you doing it? I've always been very passionate about every song I write and even every song I cover. I make sure that every line means something to me. You also have to be able to write songs, but that all comes with practice."

indie now: Do you have to get into some kind of zone when you write or does it just come naturally?
Nick Glover: "Usually I'll come up with something out of no where and I'll just love it so I'll write something to it. It really all depends on my mood; some nights I'm just not in the mood to write so it makes it difficult for me. Other nights I could start writing 2-3 songs out of no where. Writing for me comes in random intervals. I try not to force it so I get the best result I can."

indie now: What's in the near future musically for Nick Glover?/Are we going to see a record soon?
Nick Glover: "At the moment I'm recording my new album or maybe EP. I haven't really decided where to go with it yet. It's going to be called "A Road Too Steep"...but there's no set release date. I have a few August shows coming up though. There's one at the Thornton Arms on the 7th of August and another at Isabella's Chocolate Cafe on the 21st."

indie now: Beatles or the Rolling Stones?
Nick Glover: "Right when I read this question I instantly though of Metric's "Gimme Sympathy" haha. I'd definitely have to say The Beatles. I was raised listening to the Beatles and they've always been one of my inspirations. I remember the first time I heard "Eleanor Rigby" I fell in love with their music."

If you want to get a good idea of who Nick is and don't have a lot of time to listen to all of his tunes, I suggest you listen to "The Letter" on his MySpace or Facebook. Easily my favorite song. You can find Nick on MySpace, Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook. His link on the left brings you to his Facebook which has links to all of the above. - Corey Young

"The Reel Music Festival Introduces Nick Glover"

The Reel Music Festival is a student-run music and film show that features artists and bands that are in the Music Business Management program at Durham College. One of the artist playing in this festival is Nick Glover, a solo artist who loves making his music and after 7 or 8 years of playing, he has gotten pretty good.

“I play on Friday March 26th at 8,” said Glover. “I categorize myself as indy, folk pop. Basically, I just go up and I play acoustic music”. Glover has also played in a band called Black Light Oprah, which was a similar style of music that he plays now.

“Usually I get my inspiration from other artists and experiences I have in my life,” said Glover. “Things that are going on with my family and friends, and things that other people can relate to.”

Glover has a very unique sound when he writes his music. According to him, his influences are bands such as Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Say Anything, Matthew Good and Relient K. All in which are bands that have a very laid back, relaxed style.

Glover also does a good job at promoting himself. He has a Music MySpace page set up that has a custom layout and 9 songs available to listen to along with a YouTube and Twitter account so his fans can follow him on his journey into music.

Bio

My name is Nick Glover and I'm a singer/songwriter from Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. I live and breathe music every single day and I use it to express myself to my friends and family. I like to write about things such as my daily life, the people I care about, and everything that makes me happy or sad. My biggest influences are bands/artists such as: Death Cab for Cutie, Matthew Good, Our Lady Peace, Bright Eyes, Metric, Manchester Orchestra, and so many more. I started out in a band called Black Light Opera in which we put together a full length album which was released for free download all over the internet. I'm now just having a great time chilling out and playing my solo acoustic tunes.
