IAA: What is your music background?
NICKY GRAMS: I started doing hip-hop over a decade ago . I recorded my first record in 2006 on a track called “Like That” with EMS. After that, I released a hard copy album titled “Here Now”. Lately I have been performing locally and abroad. Recently I was at SXSW, and was billed at Lucky Lounge with Coast 2 Coast mixtapes. Now, I’m just about to release my #Teamswagship mix-bum on Coast 2 Coast this summer. It’s going to be CRAZY!
IAA: Why do you want to record and release your own music
NICKY GRAMS: I wrote my first song around the age of two. Hip-hop has been my outlet. I love when people really listen to me. I think everybody wants to be heard. I’m just blessed that people are so receptive to my music.
IAA: What are your songs about?
NICKY GRAMS: Coming from more of a freestyle/ battle rap background my music tends to swing like that on a lot of records. I really want to expand to making feel good music. Feel good music really stands out, and everyone can relate to it.
IAA: Who is your fan base directed towards?
NICKY GRAMS: I do music my way, and if people relate to it, that’s cool. I would say that females like my music a little more than guys do
IAA: Who are your musical influences
NICKY GRAMS: My parents were my first influence, being that they were in a rock band while I my mom was pregnant with me. I also am influenced by Notorious B.I.G, Wu Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, Tupac, Lost Boyz, and many more. When I moved to the twin cities in 2000 I started listening to Roots, Mos Def, Kweli, Atmosphere, and other local talents. Basically the whole TC hip hop scene paved a way for me.
IAA: How would you describe your music to people?
NICKY GRAMS: My music isn’t something that can be put into a box. I also have a lot of different genres of music on my current project. A variety of people are going to feel my music.
IAA: What makes you stand out from other artists?
NICKY GRAMS: My style, my songwriting, and my stage presence makes me unique. People appreciate a talented songwriter who is also a good performer
IAA: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working ?
NICKY GRAMS: I’m currently focused on putting the finishing touches on my current project “#Teamswagship” due this summer. I will also be shooting videos for the for some of the tracks. I will be working on my album and also touring.
