Bio

CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR NICOLETTE:

“The voice of an angel. A joyous spirit” – Mixmag

“A rare enigma, prepare to be dazzled” - Muzik

“A strange and singular talent…excellent.” - The Guardian

Nicolette first came to the music world’s attention in 1990 when her collaboration with Shut Up and Dance led to her first single ‘School of the World/Single Minded People’ becoming an underground smash, followed by the 1992 release of her critically acclaimed first album ‘Now Is Early.’ She was then approached by Massive Attack, which resulted in her singing on and co-writing two singles ‘Sly’ and ‘Three’ on Massive Attack’s 1994 “Protection” album. In 1995, Nicolette was signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label, releasing ‘No Government’, the first single from her new album, the same year. After several more groundbreaking single releases, the album
“Let No-one Live Rent Free In Your Head” was released in 1996 and widely described as “a masterpiece.” It was a critical and commercial success, also hitting the dancefloors with a plethora of excellent remixes of each of its singles. In between times, Nicolette collaborated with various respected artists (amongst them Plaid), on their own projects, released a DJ mix album on Studio K7 and started DJing, which she still does to this day.
In 1999, Nicolette left Talkin’ Loud to set up her own label, Early Records. Her last album, “Life Loves Us”, is an intense, joyful, childlike, primal musical experience; you would definitely look at life differently after you’ve heard it! Released on Early Records in 2005, it has received rave reviews worldwide, and Nicolette’s power-charged live shows around the release have been equally rapturously received. Having had two singles from “Life Loves Us” released in 2006, Nicolette has a new single, a re-release of “No Government” with brand new remixes, out on Great Stuff Records on 5th December 5th 2007. She is currently working on her next and fourth album.

As usual, Nicolette’s lush angelic vocals and profound but catchy lyrics are the heart-moving thread that unites all her songs. The combining of her sensual
and mesmerising vocal style (reminiscent of 1920s and 30s Jazz and Blues singers), with hyper-modern electronica has created her trademark
sound, a sort of 21st century new Jazz, an electro-synth bouncy blues. Although she once jokingly called her songs “witches brews” because influenced by a diverse range of music genres, this description may well reverberate because her sound is infused with a mysticism and insight that is powerful and feminine. Nicolette writes songs, she says, purely to empower herself and other people so that “we may remember who we are. And this brings joy, which is a simple right of life,“ says Nicolette. “Basically, I’m telling the simple truth that everyone knows.” Nicolette insists that the bottom line, the final word on her songs is love. “I write songs to create an atmosphere of love whenever they are played. Anything that isn’t love will go out of the window at that moment, because they are purely from the heart.”

NICOLETTE QUOTES:

Nicolette: “I write songs for people to listen to and get naturally high on. Even my slow emotional ballads have this energetic feeling. I want people to listen to my work and know that they are wonderful, I want my work to remind people of their wonderfulness constantly. That’s why my songs are uplifting, people feel good when they listen to them. If they’re feeling discouraged, they’re the kind of songs that will make them open up again, because it reminds them of who they are: special and good.”

So what inspired Nicolette to create this song? “Self-esteem”, she says simply. ” I wanted to create an anthem for self-esteem. I think times have changed, the age of false “modesty” is outdated, and it’s OK and in fact really important

to say that you love yourself and that you’re a great person. Only people with self-esteem and self-love are going to be at peace with themselves. And people at peace with themselves are not going to start wars or to see fighting or
conflict as an option on any level. So to me that’s important. But… on another level, it’s a song promoting fun, joy in oneself, and enjoying life; it’s designed for happiness…because we deserve it!”

So what's been going on in your world? Nicolette: “I've been loving myself. Pouring love into the deepest depths of myself. In so doing, I discovered th
