NIDI D'ARAC

BandAlternativeAvant-garde

"Nidi D'Arac looks like an indie rock band but plays a furious folk-rock treatment of the music in a set that switches suddenly between elegant folk melodies and furious, stomping workouts. This is a band to watch"
Robin Denselow - The Guardian

Nidi d’Arac combines tradition to innovation taking the audience to an exciting journey throughout this mysterious land, the rugged region of Salento, tucked away at the heel of Italy’s peninsula.
Lead singer of the band is the musician and ethnomusicologist from Lecce, Alessandro Coppola, whose creativity and love for his land have produced a passionate and mindful research of contents coming from the tradition, the music, the poetry, the folklore of the Mediterranean culture, acquired and elaborated.
'Modernity lives inside all of us, in our way of thinking and in our way of creating’. A.Coppola
The music by NIDI D’ARAC is pure pleasure of dance and sound, it is an ongoing party, it is emotional involvement, it is spirituality. The power of this versatile ensemble is an immediate and almost physical way through, thanks also to the audacious attempt of mixing the traditional triplets rhythm of the tambourine of the Salento ‘pizzica’ (‘sting’ in Italian, a local version of the southern Italian 'tarantella')used as a therapy for the bite of tarantula spider, with the chaotic electronic digital reality.
Guests and runners up at the 1998 edition of the Italian award for young musicians ‘Premio Tenco’, they were the opening act for the Simple Minds concert in 1999, for the Robert Plant concert in Rome, for Joe Zawinul at the 2000 edition of ‘La Notte della Taranta’ and for Kimmo Pohjonen in 2003. They were co-authors, together with Enzo Avitabile e Mory Kante, of ‘Musica a scantinato (MANA E MANE, 1999). They were nominated for the best album in dialect at the 2006 edition of ‘Premio Tenco’ and played together with Lo Cor de la Plana at the 2007 edition of ‘La Notte della Taranta’.
From Salento to Portugal, from the Capoverde islands to Spain, from London to Berlin, from Amsterdam to Paris, all the way to New York the band was able to export the traditional culture rooted in our geographic basin bringing passion and expertise to many important European festivals.
