Biography

Nigel Egg is a folk/blues original, a veteran of the 1970's British music scene who has played with legends like Supertramp and Mott the Hoople.
"I write songs about the stuff I know/feel/sense personally, and also about what my friends and family tell me. Im a middle class white guy - I never had a hellhound on my trail, and I've never worked on the killing floor. But what I do sing about is real, and that comes through in the performance. OK, sometimes it's made up, but that seems to come across too.

Nigel Egg plays originals, a few classics, and a very personal collection of soulful American Roots music. His songwriting and his ability to play soulful blues harp and guitar at the same time has won multiple awards from organizations like the Minnesota Folk Festival and the Austin TX Songwriters Group. Nigel won honors recently at the Great River Festival (LaCrosse, WI), the Highway 61 Folks Festival (Mahtowa, MN), The Big Top Chautauqua Songwriter of The Year (Bayfield, WI) and scored a second-place win at the prestigious Telluride (CO) Blues and Brews festival in their annual Acoustic Blues Competition.

Lyrics

When I Was You

Written By: Nigel Eccleston

Verse 1.
WHOSE PICTURE IS THIS?
IT'S CRACKED AND OLD
YOU'VE GOT YOUR ARMS AROUND TWO SENORITAS DOWN IN MEXICO.
THAT CLAPTON T-SHIRT
THAT CRAZY GRIN
I STILL REMEMBER WEARING THEM

(Chorus)
WHEN I WAS YOU
WHEN I WAS YOUNG
I NEVER WALKED WHEN I COULD RUN
I PUSHED THE ENGINES UNTIL THEY BLEW
BUT DIDN’T WE LAUGH AND LIVE ENOUGH FOR TWO
WHEN I WAS YOU

Verse 2.
THE WILD BLUE YONDER ASKED YOU TO DANCE
YOU BURNED THROUGH MONEY, FRIENDS AND WOMEN LIKE THERE WAS NO SECOND CHANCE.
THE GIRL WHO LOVED YOU
GAVE UP THE RACE
I WEAR HER MEMORY ON MY FACE

WHEN I WAS YOU
WHEN I WAS YOUNG
I NEVER WALKED WHEN I COULD RUN
I PUSHED THE ENGINES UNTIL THEY BLEW
BUT DIDN’T WE LAUGH AND LIVE ENOUGH FOR TWO
WHEN I WAS YOU

Verse 3.
REGRETS,
THAT NEVER PAYS
BUT IF YOU’D BOUGHT A PIECE OF LAND, OR STARTED UP AN IRA...
DIDN’T HAPPEN
CAN’T BE BLUE
CAN’T BLAME MYSELF FOR BEING YOU

WHEN I WAS YOU
WHEN I WAS YOUNG
I NEVER WALKED WHEN I COULD RUN
I PUSHED THE ENGINES UNTIL THEY BLEW
BUT DIDN’T WE LAUGH AND LIVE ENOUGH FOR TWO
WHEN I WAS YOU

Set List

I can play three one-hour sets of originals if required, but I prefer to have a mix of about one-third cover tunes (especially with new audiences, to draw them in).
I am an entertainer as well as an artist - I interact with the audience, tell stories, get them to participate and have a good time. My favorite venues are listening rooms that serve alcoholic beverages.
I am not suitable for venues that need dance music, or that primarily want heavy radio-rotation hit music. I'm willing to play background music but I do charge more for that. Thanks!
