Bio

Nigel of Bermondsey has gained a wealth of experience in a wide ranging number of jobs! As a musician, recording artist and composer he has covered enough different areas of the music industry to satisfy any number of different careers. He is not only a very capable performer, but plays a plethora of instruments (including piano, guitar, bass, drums, vox etc.) and can compose across a number of different genres. He has penned a number of Top Ten hits, both in the UK and overseas, is deft on the decks and more than knows his way round a recording studio, both producing and remixing for a whole range of artists.

Nigel left studying medicine at St Georges Hospital, Tooting as a member of 'Gay Dad', with whom he immersed himself in the hyped excesses of the late 1990’s music scene. A top ten hit with 'To Earth With Love', produced by David Bowie's legendary producer Tony Visconti, set Gay Dad on a path that took them several times round the globe touring with such diverse acts as The Pretenders, Robbie Williams and The Ben Folds Five. The band released two albums for East West Records before spectacularly imploding.

By 2002 Nigel was working as a session musician for the likes of DJ The Freelance Hellraiser, playing on various remixes for Ian Brown, Placebo, Snow Patrol, amongst others, whilst living in Bermondsey, a borough of SE London now better known as once home to the late Jade Goody. Needing an alter ego, he couldn't really go under anything other than Nigel of Bermondsey. Nigel's family links with the much maligned borough go back generations and this has helped him find inspiration amongst the local characters and their stories.

Nigel of Bermondsey is also half of a dance music act called 'Cage & Aviary' with releases on D.F.A., Dissident, Astrolab, Tiny Sticks and The Walls Have Ears.

In 2007 the London based label Pure Mint Recordings picked up Nigel of Bermondsey's eponymously titled debut album.

Carrying on the Bermondsey connection, Nigel also wrote a series of songs based on local history and astute observation called 'The Bermondsey Suite', which was offered for free alongside his debut album.

'Nigel of Bermondsey' was released in autumn 2008 to rave press reviews (Independent, Artrocker etc.) and some fine radio support (Radio 2, XFM, 6Music, Q Radio, etc.). Nigel was also nominated for the 2009 XFM new Music Award.

Nigel of Bermondsey has just released his second single in the UK, a wonderful cover of the Inspiral Carpets 'This Is How It Feels'. The song has become a firm favourite of Nigel’s live set and has received wonderful UK airplay on Radio 2, Absolute Radio and sessions for XFM with the original writer Clint Boon. Nigel is currently hard at work in the studio working on new material for his second album.
