"Nightless Lovers - Percy Mayfield revue"

The Nightless Lovers breathe new life into the classic blues and poetry of Percy Mayfield, the man who wrote Hit The Road, Jack and who has long been known as the Poet of The Blues. With the magical horn lines of Maxwell Davis faithfully recreated by the Gripping Stuff Horn Section, the Nightless Lovers are a wonderful new addition to the Canberra music scene. A project organized by Leo Joseph (whose other blues project is Key Grip) on piano and some vocals, the Nightless Lovers feature Canberra favourite Tony Haley as vocalist, Phil Jenkins on bass, Mitch Preston on drums and the Gripping Stuff Horn Section of Nick Combe, Tom Fell and James LeFevre.

"2010 Friday Night Live Performances"

Nightless Lovers

Nightless Lovers, named eponymously after a Percy Mayfield tune, are a thinly veiled side project of Leo Joseph where he has decided to stray from using his usual Key Grip band moniker. That’s because Nightless Lovers are dedicated only to performing Percy Mayfield’s tunes the way he recorded them in the 1950s. You got it: Nightless Lovers - All Percy Mayfield, All The Time. In the Nightless Lovers, Tony Haley brings to new life Mayfield’s own evocative lyrics and vocals, the Gripping Stuff Horn Section recreates the superb horn lines of that genius Maxwell Davis (why bother trying to improve perfection?), and Leo Joseph on piano, Mitch Preston on drums and Phil Jenkins on bass hold the show down underneath.

Still working on that hot first release.

Originally from Adelaide, and now based in Canberra since his return from nine years in the USA in 2005, piano and Hammond player Leo Joseph has become a regular feature of the Canberra blues scene. He has his own bands Key Grip and the Nightless Lovers and regularly plays for gigs and sessions of other bands around town such as Chain Award winners The Business, DJ and the KarismaKatz and Canberra Blues Society Best Band of the Year Winners in 2007, 2008 and 2009, Mama's Blooz House.

Leo has been playing piano for forty years and started playing blues piano in 1984 when he joined the Full House Blues Band, a stalwart Adelaide blues outfit back in those dim, dark days of the mid-1980s. He lived in Philadelphia from 1997 to 2005 and became a part of the blues scene there. As a result, he was invited to contribute piano and Hammond parts for his Philadelphia friends Randy Lippincott and Lenny Fatigati on their own recently recorded CDs. Leo recorded his parts here in Canberra at the ArtSound studios with Tony Hunter engineering.

Apart from playing in a number of blues outfits in Canberra, Leo has two blues projects, Key Grip and Nightless Lovers. Key Grip is about “blues that swings” and features Dave Blanken (guitar) and Mitch Preston (drums) both formerly of the Groove Kings, Greg Moss (bass) and the Gripping Stuff Horn Section (James LeFevre, Tom Fell and Nick Combe) on alto, tenor and baritone saxes. Nightless Lovers is Leo’s latest project and, happily, is quickly garnering attention. Named eponymously after a Percy Mayfield tune, and focussing on Mayfield’s period with Specialty Records in the 1950s, the Nightless Lovers are breathing new life into Percy Mayfield tunes including Hit The Road, Jack, which he wrote for Ray Charles. Maxwell Davis’s brilliant horn lines are faithfully reproduced – why try to improve on perfection? Tony Haley leads the vocals in Nightless Lovers, Leo plays piano inspired by Willard McDaniel’s lines (McDaniel and Davis also played for BB King and T-Bone Walker), Phil Jenkins on upright bass keeps it flowing and the Gripping Stuff Horn Section once again do the honours with the brass.
