Riveting Riffs (September 2007)
Music Fans Have Waiting For A Girl Like Me

What do you get when you take fabulous R&B / Soul rhythms, sprinkle in some pop vocals, and apply a liberal dose of business savvy, and just for good measure mix in the tiniest amount of Japanese? Give up yet? You get Nikkole, a Los Angeles native who just happens to be one of today’s most musically and commercially successful independent artists. By the way, she is not Japanese, but more about that later.

Nikkole’s current single “Breathe,” from her CD A Girl Like Me is receiving airplay in most regions across the country. Radio stations such as the Clear Channel network and regional markets liked what they heard from the singer when her album Appearances debuted in 2001, and now are hooked on the energy infused vibes.

Although many artists will record a couple of alternate mixes for some of their songs, seldom does an artist such as Nikkole do five different mixes for a song, as she did with “Breathe.” Nikkole talks about one of those mixes, “We did a poll at my shows, asking concertgoers what type of mixes they wanted to hear. The feedback that we got included people wanting to hear a neo soul type of (vibe), so we decided to try it. So far, with the release that came out on September 4, radio has been scooping it up. They are really into the mix called “Breathe Inhale-Exhale.” It is a neo soul kind of a vibe. We just decided to do something different, and as an Indie artist, you have that choice. No one is standing over your back saying, ‘You can’t do that, you have to stick to this format.’ This is the third single, and I am still getting the support from the same urban AC commercial stations.”

For her sophomore project, A Girl Like Me Nikkole dipped into another talent pool comprised of the ladies who make up the vocal trio The Emotions, best known for their hit song “Best Of My Love.” She had worked with The Emotions on some of their previous projects, and now the group returned the favour. “On the album A Girl Like Me, I had a song that I wanted them to sing on, and they were gracious enough to do it. That was the first single which was released from A Girl Like Me, titled “It’s Too Late.” I couldn’t have asked for a better group of ladies to work with. It was a little unnerving at first, to give direction to Grammy Award winners and legends. It turned out the song did really well on commercial radio.”

When I contacted Wanda Vaughn of The Emotions, I discovered that she is just as much a fan of Nikkole as the singer is of the vocal trio, “I think Nikkole’s biggest asset is her heart. You hear Nikkole’s heart and soul in everything that she sings and writes about. Nikkole is magnificent, and I treasure the moments that I have spent with her both as a professional singer and as a friend.”

There are a lot of ways for independent artists to get noticed by music fans, other than MTV or commercial broadcasting networks, such as through American Idol Underground Radio, where the urban tune “Gon’ Bounce,” has received a lot of play. “My second single “Gon’ Bounce,” debuted at # 1 on American Idol Underground Radio. It is a radio program for independent artists, and it debuted at # 1 on the R&B charts. That was wonderful too. It had such success that it has crossed over into world markets such as the UK, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. It has been a slow process but it has been steady,” she says.

Nikkole’s music has so powerfully impacted the world stage, something almost unheard of for an independent artist, that there was a strong demand from Japanese fans for her to translate “Over It,” from the CD Appearances, into Japanese. “When I would go over to Japan, I would be asked to sing in Japanese and I do not even speak Japanese. I thought, ‘Am I up for this challenge?’ I decided since there was a demand for it, I would do it. By then I had met Ken Yasuda (her fiancé) who was originally from Japan. He and his mother translated the song into Japanese, then, they wrote it out phonetically so I could pronounce it while I was singing. I practiced it a few times before recording it. Within three takes we had what you hear (the Japanese version of “Over It”). I have been told by Japanese people that they understand exactly what I am saying, love it (the song) and can feel it.”

Besides the language hurdle, the song needed some adjustments so the music would fit the new phrasing. “I adjusted the endings of the verses slightly, by changing the melodic rhythm up, in order to fit all of the words. The same goes for the bridge or “C” section. We also decided to make the backgrounds bigger and add harmonies. We put live drums on the track as well. I think the production of the Japanese version is a bit grander than the original version,” says Nikkole. Since her music is also being played in Germany, Italy and France, one wonders if other internationally flavoured songs are in the talented singer’s future.

When Nikkole decided to build a solo career, she surrounded herself with some industry heavyweights and trusted friends. She also decided to produce the CD Appearances on her own record label, SE Entertainment Records, jointly owned by herself and her brother Wallace. Her decision to self produce came about through what one could easily argue is an accurate reflection of the music industry, “It boils down to no matter how good you are, you really have to know someone (to get signed to a label). I decided to do my own CD because I am a good songwriter and I can produce. I had a lot of good friends who were willing to help me, such as producer Lloyd Tolbert, who worked with Lionel Ritchie. I also have a friend who is a sound engineer and he said he would help. Another friend who owned a very nice studio threw in his time and services to do the mixing. I bought some pro tools equipment and recorded my vocals at home. I collaborated with Lloyd Tolbert. Lloyd, Jon Clark (Vanessa Williams, Isaac Hayes, Coolio) and I did all the tracks for Appearances.

The decision to collaborate with Nikkole was an easy one for Tolbert, who says, “After working with Nikkole for a number of years, I have come to view her as my “go to person.” On any project that I am, developing Nikkole has the talent, skills and work ethic that is required to not only help complete the project, but to help take it to the ultimate level. Her angelic vocals, coupled with her amazing writing ability ensure that my projects turn out the way I envisioned them.”

Knowing that producing demos is costly, the 5’10” Nikkole accepted an offer to become a model. “I would say that modeling allowed me to get my chops together as a singer, because it gave me a lot of time to devote to practicing, rehearsing and just getting better at honing my craft, so that I had something that people wanted to listen to. I had more time to write, because I was making money from modeling, and it enabled me to put out my first CD Appearances.”

After hearing her CD Appearances on CD Baby in 2003, Virgin Free Radio, associated with Virgin Records, invited her to submit her CD Appearances for consideration. Out of the twenty-five thousand submissions that Virgin Radio received that year, Appearances was selected as one of the top CDs.
Nikkole broke new ground once again, proving her business savvy by securing numerous sponsorships with a number of prestigious companies. In 2001, she struck a deal with the jewelry and clothing kingpin Sergio Valente. “I wrote to them, let them know what I was doing, and asked them if they were interested in supporting an independent artist who was going after her dreams,” explains Nikkole.
After hearing Nikkole’s music Sergio Valente was onboard. Today Nikkole has sponsorship agreements in place with Smashbox Cosmetics, Seychelles Footwear, Joe’s Jeans, the Washington Mutual Bank, Nine West, Fiji Water and LF Stores.

When you talk to Nikkole, you get the sense that you are in the presence of someone on the cusp of greatness. I can honestly say that I can think of very few artists to whom I have spoken over the years, who combine excellence in songwriting, possesses great vocal ability, fabulous business acumen and she is well spoken. What is particularly gratifying from my vantage point is that she is in control of her career and her destiny. I remember many years ago hearing how just a couple of years into his music career David Bowie purchased back the rights to his own music, long before he had become a household name. We all know his story let’s hope the future holds the same for Nikkole.

Indie Artist Nikkole Sings About “A Girl Like Me”
By: Lori Wilson

Since the release of her 2001 debut CD, "Appearances", independent pop artist Nikkole has made her presence known on the music scene. As a singer, songwriter, model and producer, she’s making quite an impact in the states, as well as the rest of the world. Having released her sophomore effort, "A Girl Like Me," on SE Entertainment Records, Nikkole has proven she’s here to stay.

After the release of her initial recordings, Nikkole quickly became the number one independent singer in the U.S. by way of mp3.com, one of the first major music websites. Due to her unique and powerful voice, Nikkole was given the Best Pop Album award from Radio Free Virgin and JPF in 2001, beating out over 7,000 other independently released albums. The same group named Nikkole’s single "Over It" as one of the Top 20 Best Pop Singles in 2003. For this she merely had to beat out 25,000 other indie songs.

"A Girl Like Me" has been added to medium or heavy rotation on over 60 commercial radio stations (including Clear Channel) in the U.S., as well as radio stations in Europe, Asia and Australia. Her impressive five-octave range and powerful vocals have made such a huge impact in Japan, that she has become one of the first American pop artists to record two songs in Japanese.

Described as "musical poetry with a pop/urban sound", "A Girl Like Me" is reminiscent of classic R&B, but infused with a fresh updated style. Nikkole’s deep sultry voice may initially come as a surprise, but it’s clear she knows how to work her vocals to achieve just the right tone.

Playing it cool and mellow, Nikkole offers up the soulful "It’s Too Late", then switches it up in the sexy and flirtatious "Lollipop" and even rocks out a bit in the soul searching "That’s What Life’s About." Her feisty tale of leaving her no-good cheatin’ man, "Gon’ Bounce" is already getting plenty of play on the radio, as well as in clubs. Receiving quality backup, "A Girl Like Me" includes tracks featuring Melle Mel, The Emotions, Shadii and Wendy & Wyann with Sober.

Nikkole’s hard work and obvious abilities have opened the door for her to work with many legendary entertainers in her field. Not only has she written songs for The Emotions and The Commodores, she has also lent her considerable vocal and writing talents to Norman Brown’s new CD, "Stay With Me" which has enjoyed the #1 spot on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Charts for 8 weeks and stayed in the top 10 for at least 16 weeks.

In addition, Nikkole has worked with other legendary performers such as Gregory Hines, Whoopi Goldberg, Cedric the Entertainer, Patrice Rushen, Babyface and Sheree Brown. Her music can also be heard on film soundtracks for "The Brothers", "Biker Boyz", "Love and Action in Chicago" and "Just Another Romantic Wrestling Comedy." ??Not only is she an accomplished musician, Nikkole is also a successful model who has worked for Seychelles Footwear, Joe’s Jeans, LF Larchmont, A Catherine Original and Smashbox Cosmetics. She has also been featured in issues of Ironman Japan, BRE (Black Renaissance Exclusive) and Ebony.

Nikkole’s maxi-single "Breathe", off her CD "A Girl Like Me" will include 5 mixes of the cut and will be available on September 4th. Co-produced by Nikkole and Wallace Hall, "A Girl Like Me", as well as her other releases can be found at CDBaby.com or on iTunes.

With a sultry sound and soulful lyrics, Nikkole has been blazing the airwaves with her sophomore project, A Girl Like Me (SE Entertainment Records). The singer and songwriter has worked with incredible music talents such as Baby face, the Commodores and Patrice Rushen, among others. For her first single, "It's Too Late," Nikkole had the pleasure of teaming up with the Emotions, a group she has admired since childhood. The song was penned by Nikkole, along with her brother, Wallace Hall, and producer Lloyd Tolbert, and the Emotions provided background vocals. Her follow-up single, "Gon' Bounce," deals with a relationship that has come to an end, while "I Think Of You" and "Amazing" take listeners into the heart and soul of a person truly in love. Old school blended with a contemporary pop/urban sound is what listeners can delight themselves in when listening to the enchanting vocals of Nikkole. (Page 50

Spotlight :: Interview with US singer-songwriter Nikkole

By: Carmine Pascuzzi

One of the most fascinating and often invigorating aspects in the music scene is discovering singers from across the world. With the continual growth of the Internet as an outlet for artists to showcase their work, I find it common to receive such news. One recent newcomer I found is a singer-songwriter called Nikkole. She is originally from North Carolina, USA, and now resides in Los Angeles. She had a debut CD “Appearances” in 2003 and now follows up with “A Girl Like Me”. Nikkole’s music has already seen her popularity soar in online circles, especially on mp3.com She is also a model and her attractive look endears herself to a growing fanbase.

The music is refreshing as one of these new stars on the horizon and willing to put in the effort to market/promote herself through the Internet and other independent sources. Nikkole is working very hard in the “do-it-yourself” method and convinces me of being a genuine and quality performer with much to offer. Her efforts have so far resulted in collaborations with Grammy Award-winning artists The Emotions. She has created cuts for the trio’s next album and her own music has been highly valued by The Commodores, Babyface, and others. “I’ve always had a love of music. I used to write poetry and I had the good fortune to grow up singing with some good names in the industry. Working with The Emotions has been a big thing for me. They have been a great inspiration, validating what I’m doing.

In Japan, Nikkole has received a great response because of a song “Over It”, re-recorded in Japanese from her debut album. Nikkole says, “I’m reaching a broader audience because of the Internet. As for Japan, I don’t even speak Japanese but I thought it was worth a try. I made a good impression and it was a good result. The audiences there are very friendly.

Most of Nikkole’s promotional efforts are through regular radio activities around the California region and occasional in-store appearances. “I’ve had some success with radio stations because of the way we set things up. I’ve had exceptionally good feedback from radio. The fact that I’m singing R&B has lent itself to it also.” Nikkole also acknowledges how vital the Internet is as a do-it-yourself mechanism. “The Internet is important if you know how to work it. It gives you something to work within your resources if you’re not signed to a major label. You need to devote much time to it.”

As far as major label possibilities, Nikkole is circumspect about the future. “We’ve had some interest from major labels, but we’re determined to do the work and keep going our way, as long as it’s working. Besides, the offers weren’t totally to our liking. The only thing we miss, obviously, is the resources that the majors have.”

With her modelling assignments, she is the complete package. “I’ve been modelling since I was a teenager. I was able to get endorsements for jeans and footwear. There have been several other endorsements. As for fashion tips, she offers the following comment: “Wear what suits you. For example, the lower-cut jeans don’t work for everyone.”

Her desire is definitely to join the ranks of today’s top-selling and well-respected music artists.

As well as Nikkole's own website - see side bar - you can check out her music at: www.Nikkole.com

BRE Magazine (December 2005)
10 Questions With Nikkole

Los Angeles, CA - Blue-eyed soul singer, Nikkole was raised in a little town in North Carolina just outside Virginia. Migrating to Los Angeles with her brother / manager / mentor Wallace Hall (who sold his house to support his sister's aims) and mother Glenda, she was on a mission to pursue her singing career. Influenced by the soul sounds of her parent's, she recalls being awakened every morning to standards from such artists as Al Green and Isaac Hayes. Her music reflects that appreciation and her single, "It's Too Late," which was produced by Lloyd Tolbert (Brandy, Lionel Richie, Yolanda Adams, Diana Ross, Bobby Womack) of Drumatk Music, features the legendary group The Emotions. Another cut, "RSVP" takes another tact with the legendary rapper Melle Mel. Both are from her album, "A Girl Like Me," on indie SE Entertainment, distributed through Tangiers Music. Having sung and performed around the world with such artists as Babyface, Patrice Rushen, Gregory Hines, Whoopie Goldberg, The Commodores and The Emotions, Nikkole has formed solid soul roots. In fact, a writer and producer as well (she wrote her own LP), she has cuts on the upcoming Emotions and Commodores albums. Deep into digital delivery, this indie label garnered accolades from mp3.com for Nikkole as one of America's number one independent singers, with her cut "Over It," which she also recorded in Japanese due to heavy demand from her growing Japanese audience, receiving one of the Top 20 Best Pop Singles. With more than 50,000 downloads and 10,000 in retail sales, Nikkole has a global vision and, in addition to joining the upcoming Divas of Soul Tour in the States featuring The Emotions, Evelyn Champagne King and Taste of Honey as the 'diva in training,' she goes to Tokyo the end of December and will be returning to New Zealand and Australia for shows and has 45 dates on the Hoodstock Tour. Currently in rotation at AC stations like WHUR-FM (96.3) in D.C. and WJKX-FM (102.5) in Hattiesburg, "It's Too Late" can also be accessed at www.nikkole.com

An American Sensation Abroad, Nikkole Comes Home

By Frank Roberts

Nikkole's fans gathered to see a performance that has been enticing and impressing audiences in other parts of the world, particularly Japan.

Currently, she is trying to make inroads in the United States and, if her one-hour performance two nights ago is any indication, she should become a singing force to be reckoned with.

Nikkole is constantly on the move as she sings in the style of Mariah Carey or Alicia Keys. Her production, on a smaller scale at the moment, is similar.

And the voice. Her promotional material brags about a five-octave range. When she hits that fifth octave, which she does fairly often, you think about glass shattering.

Everything she sings is original.

Nikkole writes the words and music and produces her own CDs. She has penned pieces that have done especially well in a variety of overseas locales, songs such as "Gon' Bounce " and "A Girl Like Me."

Nikkole predicts that, in about five years, she will be a Grammy winner.

Lesser talents have been so honored.

Her fiance was on hand for a brief appearance.

Ken Yasuda is a story unto himself - baseball player, movie actor, producer, black belt. He is Mr. Japan and came in fourth in a recent Mr. World competition. He is head coach of the Tokyo Sabres of the International Fight League, whose rough-and-tumble exploits can be seen from Mondays on WTVZ.

Also deserving of honors is the Ty Marquis Smith Band of Norfolk, opening the show with some impressive jazz, highlighted by a 15-minute tribute to the leader's hometown, "East St. Louis: The Promised Land."

Coming home: North Carolina native to perform at cultural arts center in April

By Ashley McKnight-Taylor

"To me, coming to Suffolk is almost like coming home," said Nikkole, a Los Angeles recording artist. "I'm so excited about it."

The pop, R&B-infused singer will be performing at the Suffolk Center for the Cultural Arts next month. It will be a special treat for people throughout Hampton Roads and North Carolina who call Nikkole granddaughter, niece, cousin or friend. The tall, slim, strawberry blonde with ice blue eyes is an Ahoskie, N.C., native.

She was born and raised there until her mother moved her and her brother, Wallace Hall, to Los Angeles when they were in their early teens. Both children had an interest in music, and mom, Glenda Hall, wanted to get them involved.

"It really was the only thing to do," Nikkole said.

Her grandparents, Fred and Elsie Skeeter, are lifelong Suffolkians, and Nikkole spent every summer with them as a child. She was a performer even in those days, singing in church and putting on concerts in the back yard for friends and neighbors. She can recall being drawn to music as young as the age of 2.
"I think I was like six years old when I wrote my first song," she said.

Nikkole still writes, penning and co-producing every song on both of her albums, working as an independent artist. Though taking the independent route - she has refused to sign with major labels despite offers from them - is a tougher journey to success, it enables her to remain in control of all aspects of her look and sound.

"I know myself best," she said. "I know what I want to say and what I don't want to say."

In her early years in LA, Nikkole did a lot of modeling with Otto Management. At 5 foot, 10 inches, she is well-suited for the work and has additional endorsements and sponsorships with Seychelles Footwear, Joe's Jeans, LF Larchmont, A Catherine Original and Smashbox Cosmetics. Still, modeling is more of a job, she says. It cannot compare to the joy she finds in music.

Nikkole and Wallace started out doing background singing for various artists, honing their craft. Then she produced some demos and released her first album, "Appearances," in 2001. It was a successful CD; recordings from it earned her the title of No. 1 independent singer in the United States by mp3.com, an Internet music downloading site.

Later she received a Best Pop Album award from Radio Free Virgin and Jackson Free Press, beating out 7,800 other independently released albums. Her winning streak continued with another award from Radio Free Virgin and JPF with her song "Over It" being named one of the top 20 Best Pop Singles out of 25,000 independent successful songs in 2003.

That success enabled Nikkole to branch out and work with some legendary performers such as The Emotions, The Commodores, Gregory Hines, Whoopi Goldberg, Cedric the Entertainer and Babyface, said Wallace Hall, who now is a backup singer in her band. Each collaboration brought new challenges and has helped develop and enhance Nikkole's own unique voice.

She was raised on a variety of music and continues to draw inspiration from many artists. Nikkole names Mariah Carey as a role model, but also looks to musicians Alicia Keys, Natalie Cole, The Beatles, and Earth, Wind and Fire. Singing and writing come naturally to her, she said. Many songs start as poetry that draws on her own experiences as well as those around her. She keeps notebooks and a recorder with her at all times in case inspiration strikes.

Nikkole has toured along the West Coast, in Europe and Japan, where she struck a chord. Fans there were so enamored that she eventually recorded two songs from her new album in Japanese.

In October 2005, she released a new full-length LP titled "A Girl Like Me" on SE Entertainment Records. On this CD Nikkole exercises her five octave range. The lead single, "It's Too Late," features The Emotions and can be heard in more than 60 commercial radio stations around the world, and her current single, "Gon' Bounce," is gaining popularity.

Her April 21 performance at the SCCA should be invigorating for the audience, she said, adding that a mix of upbeat numbers and ballads will take people on an emotional rollercoaster. One thing they won't get: an onslaught of background tracks and distracting dancing. When Nikkole gets onstage, there is nothing between her voice and the audience.

"I want to enjoy every moment of it. I love to be in front of a crowd and performing."

"It's Too Late" has been added to over 50 commercial radio stations, including Clear Channel Stations in the U.S. and to radio stations in the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Islands. All of these stations have the single in medium to heavy rotatation. Airplay promotions are being handled by the Bryan Farrish Promotions Firm and WHAM Associates in Los Angeles, California.

As a young child, Nikkole's music career started when her mother, Glenda Skeeter-Hall, a native of Suffolk began raising her on a healthy diet of music from the likes of "old school" artists such as Isaac Hayes and Al Green to Santana and Bob Marley. She and her brother, Wallace along with their cousins organized and orchestrated their own family concerts every summer at the home of their grandparents, where they entertained the family, friends and neighbors.

Now as an adult, Nikkole has reached new heights beginning with the winning of an award for one of the Best Pop Albums with her debut cd, "Appearances" in 2003 from Radio Free Virgin and JPF. "Appearances" beat out over 7800 other independently released albums. On the same evening, Nikkole's single, "Over It" also won as one of the Top 20 Best Pop Singles out of 25,000 independently released songs.

"Appearances" laid the groundwork for the explosive, brand new album by Nikkole, "A Girl Like Me!" The album contains 16 tracks and is certainly something special. The set also includes a special version of Nikkole's song, "Over It" recorded in Japanese adapted from the Award-Winning English version on her debut album, "Appearances."

Nikkole states that, "I did it for my fans. I have been performing that song in Japan and it is a favorite over there. So with that being said, I decided to re-record the song in Japanese for audiences around the world to hear."

"A Girl Like Me" is off to a spectacular start. Nikkole has had over 8,500 downloads on iTunes. At iTunes - Japan, the album, "A Girl Like Me" and the maxi-single, "It's Too Late" featuring The Emotions, both debuted in the Top 50 when it was released. Nikkole was one of a handful of American artists to accomplish this in their first week of release. This prompted a radio and in-store tour of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto at the beginning of January 2006, where she met fans and signed autographs.

Nikkole has also been tapped to join the upcoming "Hoodstock Tour" and "The Real Divas of Soul Tour" to take place in 2006 in the USA and abroad.

Nikkole Rips It Up at B.B. King’s – Hollywood!

To borrow a line from "Independent Woman" by Destiny’s Child..."Charlie how yo' angels get down like that!"...would be most appropriate, and in this case, Nikkole was the angel gettin' down at B.B. King's in Hollywood.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 11, 2006 -- Tamika Johnson from Soul Sisters Biz said that, "This girl ain't nothin' but pure soul. That show was tight, the whole band looked great! Nikkole is definitely a polished and exciting entertainer!" Of course Ms. Johnson was speaking of Nikkole’s recent performance B.B. King’s – Hollywood on the Universal City Walk at Universal Studios.

Nikkole received an overwhelming thumb's up response when she brought her "A Girl Like Me" show to B.B. King's in Hollywood. People were elated when Nikkole showed off her five octave range. The moment she hit the stage --- she owned it and no one doubted that fact for one second.

When the show started, the band came out on "Gamble" from Nikkole's first album, "Appearances" and right when the audience was excited with anticipation, out come the dancers and "Drive You Crazy" starts; then Nikkole appears on stage in an Italian inspired White Mediterranean Mini-Dress and looking hot like FIRE! She gave us a taste of her funky hip-hop skills before sliding into "Baby, Baby" which is also featured in the motion picture, "Love and Action in Chicago." She then breaks the show down and sings the very beautiful neo-soul song, "Breathe" after which she let us have it with her first single from her album, "It's Too Late" which was blazin'. Before we knew it, "It's Too Late" turned into a party mix before jammin' with "Lollipop" which got the crowd pumped up and screaming, especially when Nikkole asked the dancers to bring up, "Mr. Japan" - Ken Yasuda and as Nikkole sang "Lollipop" taunting "Mr. Japan," the dancers out of nowhere just ripped the dudes shirt off exposing a marvel in itself! Allowing a moment for cooling off as Nikkole graciously accepted the love from the audience, she begins to belt out, "I Wish" a song about people and in this particular case "her man" not acting the way he is supposed to or expected to act and she sings it with such conviction that she lets you know that this cat is getting on her very last nerve. Then Nikkole touted that she couldn't come all the way to B.B. King's without giving them a little bit of what she calls the blues, which was her down-south cut called, "Nothing Without You." This song was a modern day blues song with the same spirit and heart-wrenching aspects of all the classics. Anytime a singer / songwriter can squeeze in a line that says..."I can't even go to Charmaine's to get my hair did" is one clever, artistic sister in my book. Onward, Nikkole keeps the driving force moving into her beautiful and spiritual song, "Amazing." Not only is the title of this song amazing, but Nikkole hit some notes at the end of that song which can only be attained by a very few select individuals, namely Mariah Carey and Minnie Ripperton. That girl nearly shattered every glass in the joint! Now don't you think for one minute that it all stopped there...within moments as the staff was still cleaning up the broken glass, Nikkole leaped into her current single, "Gon' Bounce" and she gave us one hell of a final number! She did a mix of "Gon' Bounce" that was off the richter. She took us on a nearly seven minute rollercoaster ride with soaring vocals and a guest appearance by rapper, J-Go. Nikkole told the ladies to "pop their collars" and she told the men "don't try to holla" as she sparred with J-Go on-stage. Like we said before she owned the stage and we all knew it!

Nikkole and her band definitely know how to put on a show. The members of the ensemble included: Background Vocalists - Wallace (Nikkole's Brother) and Frankie, Drummer / Musical Director - Khalil, Guitar - E, Dancers - Jennifer and Sayaka, Rapper - J-Go, and on the One's & Two's all the way from Tokyo, Japan via Denmark - DJ Cash.

Recording Artist Nikkole, Meets and Chats with Top 5 American Idol Contestant Paris Bennett in Beverly Hills.

Amazing vocal talent Nikkole Poses for photos and talks with American Idol’s Paris Bennett at a Beverly Hills hot spot!

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) May 1, 2006 -- Even though singer, song writer and producer Nikkole has been busy in the studio putting the finishing touches on her sure-to-be HOT Summer Hit single, “Gon’ Bounce” from her critically acclaimed album, “A Girl Like Me;” she took some time out for a photo op and chat with American Idol Finalist, Paris Bennett. Nikkole told Paris that she loved her amazing voice and that Paris and Elliott Yamin were her favorites on the show. “It is evident that Paris has an immense talent and you definitely can hear the influences of her grandmother, Ann Nesby from the Grammy Award-Winning Jam and Lewis produced group, The Sounds of Blackness,” Nikkole stated.

Nikkole admits that she, along with some of her industry friends and mentors, like The Emotions, Mariah Carey, Teena Marie, John Legend, Alicia Keys and Anthony Hamilton think that American Idol is definitely a great outlet to get voices like that of the young Paris Bennett exposed to the masses. Nikkole as an Independent artist can appreciate all the struggles of being a recording artist. Not only, has Nikkole been continuously learning the in’s and out’s of the business, but she was of the right mindset to start her own label, which she hopes to expand at some point with the addition of new artists like Paris Bennett and Elliot Yamin to the roster.

All music by Nikkole is available at retail outlets, iTunes, Amazon.com, NewArtistsOnline.com, Yahoo Music, CDBaby.com and other numerous music sources including www.Nikkole.com. Featured Grammy Award-Winning Singer on Recording Artist Nikkole's current single, 'It's Too Late' affected by a Devastating Mudslide.

Home of Wanda Vaughn of The Emotions is heavily damaged by Mudslide in California.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 11, 2006 -- Wanda Vaughn of The Emotions who is featured on the well received song, “It’s Too Late” by Nikkole was hit by a major mudslide leaving parts of her home in shambles. While at home last night, February 08th around 5:00pm preparing dinner for the family, Wanda heard a rumbling and saw a tree coming right at her. Before she could move, mud had broken through the glass doors and engulfed the kitchen and garage / rehearsal area and poured into the living room and dining room of her North Los Angeles Area home. The apparent cause was a broken water main on a hillside at a nearby cemetery, which saturated the soil and made the hillside unstable.

Wanda has enjoyed many successes in her career with her sisters Sheila and Pamela of The Emotions including winning the coveted Grammy Award for their classic song, “Best Of My Love.” Their most recent commercial release was as a featured act on Nikkole’s current single, “It’s Too Late” from her album “A Girl Like Me” on SE Entertainment Records.

Nikkole as well as SE Entertainment Records / WHAM Associates executive, Wallace Hall have been in contact with Wanda and the entire Vaughn Family during this difficult time. “Wanda is doing well” says Nikkole, “and so is the rest of the family, thank God. When I got the news I was devastated, but I am happy that everyone made it through without any major injuries especially, Wanda, Witny and Waren (Wanda’s youngest daughter and son), who were all at home during the untimely event”. Unfortunately, the family pet cat, Winter is still missing. Nikkole and Wallace, who have been working with The Emotions for a number of years, send their thoughts and prayers to the Vaughn Family and they know that the Vaughns will be back stronger than ever. Wallace adds, “Thank you to all of the people that have been calling us regarding this unfortunate event and we will be sure to give Wanda and The Vaughn Family all of your concerns, prayers and well-wishes.”

Wanda’s most recent release is, “It’s Too Late” by Nikkole featuring The Emotions, which is currently on radio worldwide.

USA TODAY
Listen Up!

If you haven't heard of this until now, then you have really been missing out. It's as simple as that. “Appearances” is a beautifully dramatic cd. Nikkole's songs are a rich tapestry of guitars, lush vocals and incredible lyrics. They are always brilliantly composed, evenly structured, and immediately pleasing to the ear. Laid over the top are Nikkole's warm melodies, telling lovelorn tales of mortality and exuberance. Her lyrics are so unwaveringly good that it is not unfair to call her a poet. - Joel Durst, USA Today -

NIKKOLE...she's not your average chick! Truly bridging the gap and taking you back with an old skool soul that is oven-fresh and what's missing in today's music!

Nikkole is an independent musician that has established herself as a true artist within the music world. Among the current crop of rising stars, Nikkole is definitely the one who has a complete package: voice, looks and a strong work ethic, that will catapult her to becoming the next legend! Nikkole is a vibrant and universal Singer / Songwriter / Producer / Performer with a 5-Octave Range whose performance in the studio and on-stage is filled with Emotion and Excitement!!!

In 2001, she released her debut CD entitled ''Appearance'' on SE Entertainment Records, which introduced the world to Nikkole's amazing vocal sound and unique songwriting ability. Her hard work resulted in a Best Pop Album award from Radio Free Virgin and JPF, for which she beat out 7800 other independently released albums. Her winning streak continued with another award from Radio Free Virgin and JPF with ''Over It'' being named one of the top 20 Best Pop Singles out of 25,000 independent successful songs in 2003. Nikkole further proved her success when she became the 1 independent singer in the US with her debut album, ''Appearance'' via mp3.com, which was one of the first major music internet websites.

The success of ''Appearances'' enabled Nikkole to branch out and work with some of the world's top performers such as Babyface, The Emotions, Lakeside, The Commodores, Midnight Star, Norman Brown, Gregory Hines, Whoopi Goldberg, Cedric the Entertainer, and Patrice Rushen. Each collaboration brought new challenges and has helped develop and enhance Nikkole's own unique voice and style. Nikkole has written and crafted new tunes for The Emotions and The Commodores and she has appeared on the soundtracks to the films ''The Brothers'', ''Biker Boyz'' and ''Love and Action in Chicago.'' Nikkole also appears on Norman Brown's 1 Billboard smash ''Stay With Me'' (2007), more specifically the radio-friendly cut ''You Keep Lifting Me Higher,'' which she not only sang, but she wrote and arranged the vocals. In fact, Nikkole spent 8 weeks at 1 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Charts with Norman Brown's, ''Stay With Me'' project. The album remained in Billboard's Top 10 for over 4 months!

Nikkole has written and co-produced every single song on all three of her albums. Nikkole is also a voting member of the prestigious National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences ''The Grammys'', which is quite an honor especially for an independent recording artist.

While we are on the subject of the Grammys, Nikkole was up for 3 Nominations in the following categories at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards: Best Urban / Alternative Performance - Breathe, Best R&B Song - Breathe and Best New Artist! Again this year, Nikkole has been selected as a contender for 8 Nominations in the following categories at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards: Album of The Year - Creolepatra, Best New Artist, Best R&B Female Vocal Performance - Exotic, Best R&B Female Vocal Performance - I Really Need You, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance - Nikkole feat. David T. Walker - Where I Was Meant To Be, Best R&B Song - Love Was Made In Heaven, Best Contemporary R&B Album - Creolepatra, Best Album Notes – Creolepatra.

Following up and building upon the success of her first CD, Nikkole released a brand new full-length LP entitled ''A Girl Like Me'' on SE Entertainment Records. This CD exposed the world to Nikkole's five octave range, and reminded them of the lyrical ingenue's exceptional skills. The lead off single ''It's Too Late'' features The Emotions and was added to medium or heavy rotation at over 60 commercial radio stations, including Clear Channel Stations in the U.S. alone and to numerous radio stations in the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Islands. Nikkole has especially struck a chord in Japan as her overwhelming demand there has led her to record two of the songs from ''A Girl Like Me'' in Japanese, making her one of the first American Pop / R&B recording artists to do so.

The explosive album, ''A Girl Like Me'' generated a second HOT Single, ''Gon' Bounce'' which was also added to radio stations at a feverish pace. ''Gon' Bounce'' debuted at 1 on American Idol radio on the first week of release in the U.S.! ''Gon' Bounce'' did what it was destined to do, which was to heat up the dance floors around the country and world!

Nikkole released yet another fantastic single from ''A Girl Like Me,'' which was the Neo-Soul cut, ''Breathe.'' The video for the song was listed as one of the Hottest new R&B videos on Blastro!

Fans and critics are both raving:

“Old school blended with a contemporary pop/urban sound is what listeners can delight themselves in when listening to the enchanting vocals of Nikkole.” – Lynn Norme
