"WOMAD Profile"

"This is an energetic, at times highly acrobatic display of West African dance, a discipline somewhat cast into shadow by the spotlight shone on the region's celebrated melody-makers. Not that Ballet Nimba neglect the musical element. The calibre of its accompanying musicians equals that of its dancers, whether delivering furious percussive work-outs or embroidering their compositions with the undulating melodies of the balafon and Fulani flute.” - www.womad.org

"Stand Out Performance at WOMAD, UK 2012 Festival"

"Alongside these stand out performances for me over the weekend(at WOMAD) were.... Ballet Nimba's performances, including the Taste The World where they danced, sang, talked, explained how the instruments were made, and still got time to cook. - www.efestivals.co.uk

"The audience were utterly transfixed and overcome by the whole experience"

"The audience were utterly transfixed and overcome by the whole experience - the sounds, the movement, the beauty, and the emotional intensity of the story. Everyone was so surprised by the intensity of expression of the dancers and the musicians they could barely communicate the wonder that they felt." "if you want to celebrate the joy of living spend an hour with Ballet Nimba"

"One of the best kept artistic secrets burst on to the stage, grabbed us ,mind, body and spirit...if you want to celebrate the joy of living spend an hour with Ballet Nimba"

One of Cardiff’s best kept artistic secrets burst on to the Chapter stage, grabbed us ,mind, body and spirit and fed us a cherished hour of the most exciting and dynamic African dance imaginable. The company has been in existence for just two years and is proving to be a company of the highest quality in its field. Set up by Artistic Director, Guinea born Idrissa Camara; he has energy and passion that is a clear inspiration to this superb youthful group of dedicated dance artists.

This is not ballet as you may know it but Nimba is the joy of life living and we have it here by the bucketful. The dancers, three men and three women are all extraordinarily fit and perform to an African beat that demands great skill and dexterity. It takes the breath away as feet seem at times to be going in the opposite direction to the legs. Camara’s choreography demonstrates that he is steeped in the African dance tradition but not afraid to embrace the world of more modern dance. The solo work that brings the evening to a climax is the most brilliant exhibition of strength and art, traditional and modern that surely must be some of the best around. There were two stories told in dance and if the narrative was not too clear the sheer wonder of the dancing was totally captivating.

The accompanying musicians are an equally strong part of the performance, there’s an amazing Fulani Flute player, a beautiful Ngoni a slim West African acoustic guitar. And some fantastic percussionists who bang their hearts out on a fascinating variety of African drums.

In contrast the evening was opened by the tall dark figure of guest star Suro Susso, from Gambia giving a short but delightful recital on the Kora, an African harp with a half of a large calabash for the sound box played with a combination of thumbs and fingers. It was a joy to watch and hear this master of his instrument at work, a perfect relaxed introduction for the ‘mayhem’ to follow.

Cardiff should be proud to be home to this fantastic troupe and if you want to celebrate the joy of living spend an hour with Ballet Nimba.

"5 * Review in Wales' National Newspaper"

We were told we would be in for something different, but nothing could have prepared us for the electrifying set of traditional African songs infused with a 21st century twist that Camara and co. had in store.
.....British stiff upper lip sensibilities were cast aside in favour of hip shaking and hand swaying as the whole room burst into action and shimmied their way down the aisles.

Bio

Nimba, the band was formed after the amazing success of its parent dance company Ballet Nimba, people loved the music from the shows so much, so the band was born! One album under their belt they are now recording a new album with a new line up and new sounds. Rooted in tradition but with contemporary beats that means you cannot stay seated, just get up and dance!

Nimba is lead by the dynamic Idrissa Camara, a celebrated and awarded choreographer, amazing musician with a talent for spotting the best people to work with and developing young talent. He is current ADAD Trailblazer and was the recent subject of a Radio 4 documentary. He is also a music tutor at the Cardiff University Ethnomusicology Department.
