Last Time This Way

Last Time This Way
by Nina Schmir (©2007)

The sheets are clean, they’re 400 count
I wrap them up around me, listen for the sound
of the clock striking
so I know I can sneak out

I grab a cookie and a glass full of wine
a pad and pencil, anything I can call mine
and I memorize the view, as I peek through the blinds

(music)

I see you on the steps as I come from the train
you’ve got a clipboard and a smile on your face
you’ve got work to do; I am not in my place

You look so pretty; your eyes never change
maybe a few laugh lines I detect with a trace
I am just passing through; on my way to someplace

They will talk
In their way; in their way
With burnt-out tongues
They’ll say silly things
That make your ears ring

If for a moment I make peace with you
I know that you will listen; you usually do
Now it’s time for good bye, did you know; I will miss you

The streets they flow like blood through my veins
I kiss you on the corner, just a block from the train
And I say in my head; this time is the last time this way

They will talk…
In their way; in their way…
With burnt-out tongues
They’ll say silly things; that make your ears ring

The sheets are dirty, they’re 400 count
I wrap them up around me, listen for the sound
Of the clock striking, so I know I can sneak out

The streets they flow like blood through my veins
I kiss you on the corner, just a block from the train
And I say in my head; this time is the last time this way
This time is the last time this way
