Bio
In 2003 Brian Kapelanski, Matt Looney, Easton Grainer, and Bob White started a band called “22 lbs Catfish”. However, it was short lived. Bob decided to leave the band to drum in his brother’s band and “22 lbs Catfish” had to go without a drummer. As Brian, Matt, and Easton pressed on looking for someone to drum they changed the name of the band to “Nine Years Away”, starting writing new songs, and hired Ben Carvela to drum in Bobs place. The name “Nine Years Away” refers to Easton’s age. At the time Easton was 9 years away from 21 years old. “NYA” soon began playing gigs at various venues around the Detroit and Ann Arbor areas. After almost a year and several shows, Ben had to move to Chicago for his work, and “NYA” was without a drummer again. On the other side of town, Bob and Andy were playing in a band named “the Order” but things were also slowing down with them. They had lost a guitarist and a bass player and were interested in merging with “NYA”. That’s when Bob meet with Matt to talk about the details. It has turned in to a great match because both bands liked each other’s music and even played a show together. The new band is continuously writing music and everyone takes a role in the song writing process. The music can be classified as punk/rock. “Nine years away” has made a commitment to push their way around the Detroit music scene and are currently performing at a verity of venues across the city and state. All show are in memory of Brian Kapelanski, you'll always live in our hearts.
