Nitemarket 12 reminds us of the jam sessions we always wish we had. Such talent. - Indie Week

Nitemarket 12 – Indie Week Finals 2012

Image: The masks were a nice touch +1

Musicality: Very tight group of Jazz trained musicians, who sound like they could be Berkeley kids composing Final Fantasy sound tracks +3

Crowd Reaction: People seemed a little confused. However the true musicians in the crowd got “it” +1

Comments: “We’re an instrumental band” in case you haven’t noticed. Which was followed by “We’re an instrumental band”. These guys know how to have fun with it and that’s what’s its really all about! +2 - The Scene Magazine

"Nitemarket 12: Blogging Vancouver's live music scene"

Nitemarket 12 from Toronto have a dramatic sound that is able to paint a landscape which moves from creepy to ethereal. The eccentricities of their songs are a testament to their talent as musicians as are the moods they are able to invoke. To be honest I am unable to describe their sound with justice, it is something you have to hear for yourself. - VanMusic

"Rewind: Indie Week 2012 10/14/12"

So there you are: minding your own business at the bar, perhaps nursing a broken heart. It’s midnight and the booze is flowing. And then suddenly, three deranged clowns walk in with creepy masks like that underappreciated Eliza Dushku flick, Soul Survivors. But don’t worry: the clowns won’t hurt you. They’ve simply decided to quit the circus life and form a prog-jazz band that playfully hat tips the Big Top.

Intrigued? I certainly was!

Nitemarket 12 wins for the most unexpected band of the night and of recent memory. I think the last time a band caught me so off-guard before reeling me in was The Dresden Dolls – a decade ago. The emergency vehicle sirens? Nice touch. I think the best thing about this band is absolutely no one knew what to think for their first instrumental tune.

Engagement Level: 5
Unique ‘Voice’: 5
‘Make You Move’ Factor: 3.5
Cerebral Captivation: 5
Desire To Acquire A CD/See Again: 4.5

Total Score: 23/25

"Nitemarket 12"

Nitemarket 12 is truly a horse of a different colour. The band describes its music as “folk music for circus folk.” And you don’t need to have a fear of circus clowns for its tunes to give you the willies. Drawing influence from stuff like Zappa and Mr. Bungle—and, says its Myspace page, from “disturbing thoughts”—this is the kind of half-psychedelic/half-straight up silly music that would thump behind the dorm room door of that first-year kid who always knew where to get mushrooms. - The Onion (Toronto)

"Nitemarket 12 - The Drake"

Nitemarket 12 are purveyors of technicolour instrumentals that crashes out of the gate with voluminous punch and live energy. Rooted in circus-like electronica and jazz fusion, this trio delivers an accessible hybrid of genres geared for pop-loving hearts. Also skirting the edges of rhythm-driven funk and prog bombast, punctuated by live-drumming and keyboard flourishes, this was a set that was well executed and hugely entertaining. - Lonely Vagabond

Bio

Originally formed under the guise of two brothers getting together with their friend to jam on some classic hip hop instrumentals, Nitemarket 12 is a glorious accident of a band. Playing a unique, cinematic form of instrumental music, Nitemarket touches on so many different styles of music (often within a single song) that it is impossible to typify their sound. It is a true form of fusion, but we dare not call it jazz. With uncanny chemistry and an emphasis on musicianship, the collective personality of this trio is what turns this abomination into a cohesive form of contemporary music with the overtones of a twisted circus.
