Bio
Nixtaband is a New York City ensemble comprised of musicians with roots based in Mexico, and the US. The band emerged in November of 2017 with the idea of experimenting with Afro-Cuban, South-American, Afro-American and Mexican rhythms. The repertoire is largely based on Mexican Folk music with contemporary Jazz and Latin Jazz influences.
The members of the band are graduates of William Paterson School of Music, the Aaron Copland School in Queens College, and the Hartt School of Music. Founded under Drummer Rivelino Quiroz, the group began writing arrangements of the Jazz, Brazilian and Mexican folk songbook. As this group began to grow its repertoire, it became more evident that a promising project with its own unique sound was beginning to form. Despite its young age, Nixtaband has performed at many of the venues in New York City including Mintons’ Playhouse, Cantina Cumbancha, and Guadalupe Inn where they perform regularly.
