"Nkulee Dube"

Nkulee Dube
No female artist has managed to fuse ethno-soul, jazz with ragga in one song as this 29-year old singersongwriter, as Nkulee Dube has done in such a short space of time since entering this
challenging and yet exciting industry. Born to the family a music legend, Nkulee Dube has big shoes to fill to preserve and sustain the name of her late father, Lucky Dube. Nkulee, whose music can be classified as ‘ethno-ragga’ fused with soul and jazz, is no stranger to the performance circuit and the music industry; she was a backing singer and dancer for the late Lebo Mathosa and later Ntando Bangani. She glides and slides with ease in between her songs as she traverses between ragga and ethno-soul as if she was born on stage. As a guest artist and backing vocalist, Nkulee has been part of her late father’s performing band and Nkulee has performed at major festivals in Australia, Holland, Papua New Guinea, French Guyana, Suriname, the South Pacific, Australasia, Africa, the USA, and across
all of Europe.
Nkulee was awarded the prestigious ‘Most Promising New Entertainer’ award at the International World Reggae Music Awards show after being nominated in seven categories and was also nominated in a number of categories at additional award events. Nkulee Dube was requested to become the ‘Goodwill Ambassador’ for the African Youth Leadership Council. Also she was nominated in South Africa at the South African Music Awards for “Best Produced Album” and the also at the Metro FM Awards show.
A powerful performer, just like her father, Nkulee has shared the stage with the Jamaican reggae/ragga artists Sizzla, Turbulence, Tosh Meets Marley Warrior King, and others in countries .

Nkulee Dube wins big award in Chicago

THE South African reggae scene has seen many great acts but none like the talented star, Nkulee Dube.

Tweet LOCAL STAR: Nkulee Dube

The 27-year-old singer was recently honoured at the International Reggae and World Music Awards, for being the first artist to be nominated six times since it began 31 years ago. The event was held at the Washington Park in Chicago and the award list featured big international stars like Akon, Rihanna, Pitbull and Beanie Man.

Nkulee, who is the daughter of legendary SA reggae musician Lucky Dube, walked away with the Most Promising Entertainer Award and performed with her idol, the iconic Jamaican female reggae star,Tanya Stephens.

She spoke with Sowetan about the experience: "It was such an honour and I nearly cried when she looked at me and said, 'wow! I didn't know that there was talent like that in Africa'."

Nkulee was also honoured for being the first artist from a non-Carribean country to be nominated at the awards.

The bubbly rising star's interest in music started at 16.

"My five friends and I had a group called Voices of the Ghetto," Nkulee said. She also did a solo album but it is her debut album My Way she is best known for.

Nkulee is fitting in a two-month tour of US cities including Los Angeles, California, San Diego and New York into her tight schedule.

So far, on tour, she has shared the stage with famous Bob Marley offspring, Damain Marley's band, as well as shows including the popular Reggae on the River. She has also been invited to perform in a show headlined by rock and roll legend Mick Jagger in his private theatre.

Nkulee Dube is one artist  to watch, and could easily fill the shoes of the greatest South African performers, such as Brenda Fassie, Lebo Mathosa and of course her beloved dad Lucky Dube. Nkulee is currently recording her new album entitled “The Journey” which will be released shortly, and her debut solo album “My Way” rose worldwide outside of South Africa to critical acclaim.
