One of our most rewarding gigs was digging a ditch...

The fact of the matter is it's nice to have a friend who's creating a pro-level recording studio in his carriage house (you know, for when he's not jetting around the country producing records). The other fact is, in order to run the studio, he needs electricity—this is where we come in.

Though we had scheduled rehearsal for that particular Saturday afternoon, we opted to trade in our figurative axes for real ones.

Our task was simple (or so we thought): finish off a mostly completed trench from the house, across the backyard, and to the carriage house. For this, we’d receive several songs worth of recording and mixing. Not a bad deal. What we didn’t know, was that the short stretch of the trench yet to be dug was mostly roots and stumps.

After two hours in the mid-summer, 102-degree Richmond heat, with blisters forming and very little progress made, giving up seemed like a better and better option. We were stumped—literally.

Of course, as with our music, all we had to do was find the right rhythm. And true to our approach for each song, we each manned (or womanned in Gina’s case) the instrument best suited to this particular piece of work. From there, momentum takes hold.

A few hours (and about 40 Gatorades) later, our mission was complete. The only trick at this point was playing our next show with blister-ridden hands—which we did and we rocked it.

Totally worth it. Besides, have you ever seen a 4’11”, 90-pound woman swing a pickaxe? Awesome.
