Noelene spoke to us about the song recently: “Sometimes when we get out of relationships we almost feel like we are flawed human beings because something that we cared so much about didn’t work out for the long run”.

She adds: “I can’t even count the number of times where I have had friends that have felt like they were “damaged goods” because of various bad things that had happened to them in their life. “Damaged” is about a realisation I had after I got out of a toxic relationship I was in during a very transformative time in my life. At first, I felt like I was a failure for being taken advantage of after being open and vulnerable and honest with someone that had meant so much to me”.

“After some time and self-reflection, I came to the conclusion that the hurt and the pain that I had been through was a superpower and that I came out better and stronger at the other end. Once I learned to own everything that had happened to me in my life, I was no longer ashamed of what had happened to me. Being “damaged” is no longer a badge of shame. Being “damaged” means that you’ve been through tough times and you have come out alive and you are better able to handle life because of it. After all, all the best people are damaged”.
