Only Son

Written By: Noel Gardner

Your Only Son

They came from the mother country, to this big, Southern land
Immigrants to Port Melbourne, suitcase, hand in hand
Working as a baker, with new child about to be
Headed up to Queensland, It was 1919

Settled down in Oxley, to a town they would call home
A place to raise a family, grow some food, and to roam
You were born amongst life’s struggles, toil, and life’s joys
Years went by and new children came, two more girls and two boys

I want to thank you, I want to thank you, thank you for all you’ve done
Your loving and your tenderness, I am your only son

Moved to Greenslopes, down in Brisbane, to a house they made their own
With the war toll on a father, still they soldiered on
You lost your brother and your father, a family’s grief to bare
And as a young girl you were expected to shoulder more, than your share

Joined the workforce at age 14, sometimes, the eldest must provide
With no income from your father , a bookbinder job you tried
Worked the factory in the war times, joined the navy, duty bound
Found your freedom on the dance floor, a new champion was crowned

I want to thank you, I want to thank you, thank you for all you’ve done
Your loving and your tenderness, I am your only son ( Instrumental)

Met a young man, in the navy, when a spark of love aroused
Courtship, distant loving, led to double wedding vows
Settled down, and raised five children, gave them all, there was to give
A strength in life, with laughter. a sense of humour, will to live

Lost your true love, far to early, just as freedom beckoned near
You never shared that travel, with no children left to rear
But you moved on, with resilience, and a sadness, rarely shown
Still giving to the newborn, another generation, growing

I want to thank you, I want to thank you, thank you for all you’ve done
Your loving and your tenderness, I am your only son

Now you sit here all so quietly, as your mind and body fade
With memories of a life full lived, and the friends you have outstayed
But as life’s leaves, wither slowly, like an early autumn song
You love is deep within us, and your story will live on

I want to thank you, I want to thank you, thank you for all you’ve done
Your loving and your tenderness, I am your only son

I want to thank you, I want to thank you, thank you for all you’ve done
Your loving and your tenderness, I am your only son
