"13-year-old Vicksburg native makes a name for himself in country music"

Vicksburg native William Michael Morgan is living the life of a celebrity.
The 13-year-old country singer has received airplay on River 101 FM, V105 FM and 490 AM in Vicksburg, WKDW in Staunton, Va., and internationally on the Internet.
His songs True Blue Cowboy and Motherload have earned him respect.
He won the 2006 North American Country Music Association International Male Vocalist of the Year and the USA World Showcase TV Viewer Award with 2 million votes.
All of this, and he has just began the seventh grade.
Q: When did you discover your love for music?
A: Well, my dad has always sang to me, but I started at 5 and was onstage at 6.
Q: Did you find it difficult for people to take you seriously because of your age?
A: Yes, I did. And still do. But now with all the big shows I do and having songs on radio it's not as bad as it was 3 or 4 years ago. We are now booking events from rodeos to Las Vegas shows. So I am finally getting taken seriously.
Q: Tell us some of the people you have met and what it was like for you?
A: I guess the best one I got to meet was Dierks Bentley two years ago. I actually got to spend the day with him and his band. They taught me so much about how a big show is set up and ran. That night I got to hang out with the tour manager in the sound booth to see what it is like to run the sound equipment. I have met so many big stars from Whispering Bill Anderson to Rhonda Vincent. Just to meet someone like Bill Anderson brings chills to you. I also met Tracy Lawrence at the Dixie Nationals last year and after the show I got to play and sing with the band at the bus. That was amazing.
Q: Who have you performed with that was a life-changing experience?
A: First would be being invited to be on a CD called Country From the Heart with Ronnie McDowell . Next would be the first time I got to do a duet with my dad on stage. He's not what some would consider a big star but he's a star to me just the same.
Q: For those who are interested in pursuing a career in the music industry, what advice would you give them?
A: Stay humble to your roots, never give up and practice every day. The dream is there if you reach hard for it

"12-year-old singer, songwriter charts big win nationally"

By Lauchlin Fields

[8/9/05] Mike and Pam Morgan of Vicksburg might have had country music's biggest - and youngest - thing brewing over the last year in the karaoke studio they built.

But 12-year-old Michael Morgan has graduated from karaoke and moved on to bigger and better things - including writing his own songs, learning the acoustic guitar and establishing a national fan base, something to which his recent viewer's choice win on is testament.

Michael pulled in 1,465,444 votes - more than any performer before - on the show's Web site, which featured a place to vote on performers from PAX-TV's July 25 broadcast of USA World Showcase, a competition for unsigned artists to display their talents.

Michael was chosen from 59,000 applicants to perform at the national talent competition on June 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where he competed against 185 finalists. He took home a $1,000 cash prize for his performance. After the show aired, Michael and other finalists were posted on the Web site for viewers to vote on their favorite.

Michael's daily dabbling in chat rooms and forums of Web sites featuring today's biggest country acts, such as Dierks Bentley and Billy Currington, garnered him attention from country music fans around the world. He also has an extensive fan base from his own Web site, Michael said it is because of those people that he was able to get so many votes.

"I had Dierks and Billy Currington people voting - they were all over the place. I also posted it on my Web site and told people to vote for me," he said.

Mike Morgan, Michael's father, said people from the show have called telling him that votes have never been so high for one performer.

They show that this up-and-coming country performer has bigger and better things to come.

"I think this kid's about to take off," Mike Morgan said. "He has booking agents looking at him already. We're amazed - we never thought it would take off this fast."

Michael said he was surprised when his mom told him about his overwhelming win Sunday.

"I was working with my brother doing roofing. When my mom told me, I started jumping up and down - I went down (off the roof) for that, though," he said. "I was really, really glad," Michael said. "I'm just glad and thankful - I can't believe what just happened."

Michael will return to Las Vegas in October to open for the next show, which will be televised Jan. 2 on PAX-TV. Mike Morgan said it's the first time a former finalist has been asked back to open for a show.

He has also been asked to perform for Vicksburg's Downtown Fall Festival Oct. 1. Michael said, with all the traveling he's been doing, he's glad to bring things back home.

"I'm finally going to be able to perform at home in Vicksburg," he said.

But traveling is still in the young singer's future. He will return to country legend Loretta Lynn's ranch in Tennessee, where he performed July 16 in her talent-search contest. On Sept. 17, he will compete against six performers for a chance to open a show for Lynn.

From there, no one knows where Michael's voice will take him. But, it's a bright future indeed.
