"Nore Davis: College is a big scam, and student loans are the devil"

Nore Davis: College is a big scam, and student loans are the devil
By Tony Castleberry | Tuesday, April 30, 2013 Inside Jokes

@tonycastleberry
Following Tony’s Twitter is what all the cool kids aren’t doing.

This interview took months to conduct.

Nore Davis has numerous reasons for not responding quickly to my questions. He’s a new father; he’s a busy stand-up; he acts.

What Davis’ answers lacked in prompt response time they made up for in enthusiasm and honesty. All caps and exclamation marks make repeated appearances in Davis’ responses and his excitement is understandable. It’s a good time to be Nore Davis and it’s a good time to start paying attention to this exciting young comic, if you weren’t already doing so.

Davis first caught my attention with the hilarious Bootleg Friday clips on his website and his bit about college not exactly being the pristine institutes of higher learning we’d like them to be. (More, much more, on this later.)

In addition to performing most nights at clubs in and around New York City, Davis has worked on “Boardwalk Empire” and appears on the highly-anticipated debut of “Inside Amy Schumer” tonight on Comedy Central.

Enjoy the interview, follow Davis on Twitter, find him on Facebook and don’t forget The Best Tweet I Can Find In Five Minutes at the end.

TC: What is your favorite thing about New York City?

ND: What is there NOT to love about New York? In my opinion, it’s the capital of the United States of America. Everybody wants to come here and pursue their dream. I’m so blessed to be born here and active in the NY comedy community.

Bam! That’s my favorite THANG about New York. The NY comedy scene. It’s a pretty corny line, but it still stands to this day: “You make it here, you can make it anywhere,” — Frankie

The scene is hip, new, original and innovative. Every spot, every show I perform on, I’m privileged to become the strongest artist I can be. No disrespect to other comedy scenes in America, but New York is by far the funniest for me.

TC: Please share at least one awkward celebrity run-in, if you’ve had one.

ND: Oh yeah, I vividly remember meeting Ahmad Bradshaw (running back for the New York Giants) in Atlantic City at the Borgata two years ago. It was the year he sprained his knee and he was rolling around in a mini leg kart.

After my show, I spotted him at the slot machine with his brother, who is a taller, younger version of Ahmad, hanging around like a parrot on his shoulder. I was star stuck and wanted an autograph but he looked so angry and unapproachable. His face screamed “NO AUTOGRAPHS!”

So for the next 15 minutes, I stalked him from an unnoticeable distance ready to strike like a cobra, but it never happened, because he got to the crap table and he was LOSING. He has money, but he acted like he gambled his whole Giants contract on the crap table. He wasn’t overreacting, but saying “Come on, man!” and a lot of “SHITS!!” Imagine me lurking from the back like an ex-girlfriend waiting to ask “Billy” back out to study.

So yeah, I bitched out and went to my room and sobbed saying, “I was so close! I was so close!” Did I mention, I’m a HUGE Giants fan? GO GMEN.

TC: The Bootleg Friday videos on your website crack me up. Do you think you’ll do any more of those?

ND: Why, thank you for the compliment. Bootleg Fridays is my heart, but unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts with my co-producer, it doesn’t look like it anytime soon. I’ve been working on the road and various spots in the city performing as much as I can these days, but the good news is, we are writing and shopping some pilots around to networks. So that’s fun.

As for NDBF, I say “NEVER SAY NEVER! Vi Va La Bootleg Friday!”

TC: You’ve described college as “the biggest scam ever” and talked about how it left you in debt. Have you made enough money in stand-up to pay off your school loans?

ND: HELL NO! NEVER. (Sorry, mentioning college debt gets me riled up like a guard dog pit bull.)

College debt will stick with me and other struggling college students like that ex you bumped in high school, but now they continue to stalk you.

The real problem is parents don’t explain what student loan is and why this bill sticks around forever. Yeah, there are scholarships, which are just 15 percent off coupons, but you have to write papers or be an exclusive athlete to get them.

What about the smart, dumb kids? The C-plus students who just want to get their BA degree, throw it at their parents and pursue their real passion — being an artist? (Can you tell my parents hate me?)

The majority of students are forced to go to college by their parents so they don’t look like GRADE A LOSERS. To parents, saying “My son is going to college” makes them look like gladiators of parenting to their friends. It’s so much better than saying “Oh, my son is an artist,” which in the parenting world means, “He’s doing nothing.” Ugh, parents just don’t understand. - The Man FAQ

"Nore Davis Shakes Up the Underground"

Last week UMW rounded out April Fool’s day by hosting the up-and-coming comedian Nore Davis at the Underground.

Originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. that Thursday night, Nore did not arrive until almost an hour later due to traffic complications on I-95. When Davis finally arrived, he immediately launched into his act with opening jokes relating to the traffic he was just in, as well as a few timely jokes about April Fool’s pranks. His brand of adult-themed humor became apparent to the audience upon his explanation of a decent April Fool’s prank involving a girl who “whips out the tittie.”

Nore Davis delivers his comedic act with an ease and calmness reminiscent of veteran comics such as Jim Gaffigan and Louis C.K. This relaxed confidence is complemented by an extremely quick delivery in which Davis would fire off punch-line after punch-line in rapid succession, leaving little room between the end of one joke and the start of another.

The content of Nore Davis’ stand-up is mostly observational humor relating to things that the average person could see in their day-to-day life. Davis has an exquisite ability to finesse the generally touchy subject of race into a very entertaining set of jokes on race relations and current views of race in our society.

A portion of Nore’s set included jokes tailored towards college audiences and dealt with such things as partying, picking a major, and his personal experiences picking up “art girls” at his alma mater, Pratt Institute.

My personal favorite segment of his routine was the impressions he did, specifically the ones of his perpetually stoned roommate who always over-analyzed the relationships of superheroes like Batman, Robin, and the X-men.

If you are into brash, fast-paced comedians who cover everything from childhood experiences to racial humor to college antics, be sure to check out Nore Davis at www.noredavis.com for some funny sketches, videos, and a list of his upcoming tour dates. - The Bullet (University of Mary Washington)

"NY Comedians liven up Bokenopoly"

For Friday night's Boken event, Stevens welcomed three New York comedians to perform in DeBaun auditorium. Comedians Nore Davis and Julian McCullough opened for headliner Greg Giraldo. Over 200 students attended the event, according to Matt "Nando" Kelly.

Opening the event was Nore Davis, an up and coming comedian from Yonkers, NY. Davis said he enjoyed Hoboken because "you have the non-smelly part. You're right before the factories [where] they cook tires and pigs feet." Davis joked about his time and college and what it was like to graduate into the real world. Davis said that he graduated from Pratt University with a debt of $60,000 dollars, only to not use his degree once he got into comedy. He added that once he got home, his family was much different. "You come home and your mom has an iPod. I only had a CD player with 12 tracks," he said. Davis also talked about the failing economy. He said "I read the news, and a lady got shot by a bow and arrow. People can't even afford bullets anymore."

Freshman Scott Ginsberg said "I honestly liked all of them, but for some reason I liked the first guy more. He was just where we are now. He seemed more connected with us than the other two comedians."

"Comic Nore Davis chats after UMaine gig"

Every Friday, The Maine Attraction brings a national comedian to the University of Maine. On Jan. 23, Nore Davis spoke his mind on college, gas prices, his family and relationships. His charismatic performance was a blast, but his humor also shined off-stage in a post-show interview.

"Students Laugh with Davis"

Students of UConn, be grateful for your food court. There are some schools that can't even afford to heat Hot Pockets for their students, according to comedian Nore Davis, commenting on his Brooklyn alma mater.

Davis entertained students for the last SUBOG-sponsored Comedy Show of the semester Thursday night. A recent college graduate himself, Davis spun jokes out of common problems facing students, especially at UConn.

"Do you think my car will get towed?" he asked the audience, launching into a story about having his car towed in Brooklyn.

"I was charged an $800 fine," he said. "That's not a fine - that's bail money."

Davis' repertoire of jokes touched upon a huge range of subjects, from graduating to the newest addition to the "Twilight" saga, "New Moon."

According to Davis, his mother replaced his framed college degree with an R.I.P. poster of Michael Jackson. She told him he would always be king of her heart, but Jackson was the King of Pop.

"Know what you want to be. Nurse, engineer, Power Ranger, whatever. Know what you want and go for it," Davis said, offering his own advice as a recent addition to the working world.

Of course, Davis' material also touched on swine flu. "The shots they give out at Walgreen's are bootleg," he said.

He found his mother to be an inspiration for much of his comedy. Davis explained his trek from Myspace to Facebook to Twitter, abandoning each site once his mother found his profiles.

If Davis said in his Facebook status that he did not feel like going to class, his mother would immediately comment: "You better get to class!"

Or worse - scanning embarrassing baby photos of Davis has become a favorite pastime of his mother's. She even tags her son in them.

Her strictness also provides Davis with a plethora of joke material. He hung up on her once during a rather tense phone call.

"I swear, I think the devil called me back and left me a voicemail," he said.

Girl trouble was another big topic on Davis' mind.

"Now, here's what I'm trying to figure out - women," he said. "I watch the Discovery Channel every day, but there's nothing on there to help me with girls."

Women are jealous of GPS, Davis said. "It's another woman in the car telling you what to do!"

Though Davis' crowd was smaller than that at a usual Comedy Show, he drew in plenty of laughs and pleased most of the audience.

"It was a good show," said Paul Gutierrez, a 1st-semester ACES major. "He had some misses, some jokes that went over people's heads, but overall he made me laugh. I look forward to seeing what he puts up on MTV."

As of Jan. 2, MTV will be the home of Davis' own show, "Kiss and Tell."

SUBOG Comedy Chair Melissa Campoli, a 5th-semester human development and family studies major, said the semester's comedy shows have been very successful, and was happy to top them off with Davis.

"I've noticed a lot of the same faces returning every Thursday night," she said. - The Daily Campus
