"Not In The Face is Austin Sound"

You might be inclined to write off a band like Not in the Face! simply on the basis of their name, but that would be a mistake. The duo of Jonathan Terrell and Wes Cargal cast raw rock nuggets that can claw and scratch with a garagey abrasiveness, kick dirty roots, and even unload an outright fury of heavy Zeppelin-esque prog that would seem impossible from a two-piece. With Cargal abusing on the drums and Terrell flailing out front with proto-punk intensity, Not in the Face! delivers it direct and untempered.

AUSTIN CHRONICLE REVIEW OF THE NEW ALBUM "TRIALS AND STIMULATIONS"

Jonathan Terrell

Trials and Stimulations
Born and bred in the East Texas town of Longview, Jonathan Terrell seemingly has roots music in his blood. Trials and Stimulations may be only his second effort, but its 14 songs span a lifetime of stories well told. Taking his cues from the likes of Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle, the twentysomething songwriter moans poetry set to country and folk settings that kick up dust with a flourish. He then watches as it settles, examining the aftermath with a keen eye. A middisc trilogy of desolation ("The Lone Road"), twisted rockabilly ("Boots"), and Dylan-esque folk ("Terrible Man") grounds the disc, perfectly illustrating Terrell's talent for mood, melody, and lyric. At 55 minutes, Trials and Stimulations could use some editing, but Terrell's songs are sturdy, his band above average and engaging.

MANDATORY FM 98.5 SHANE'S TOP TRACKS JONATHAN TERRELL - "RAINING SUNDAYS" -- ALBUM: TRIALS AND STIMULATIONS

Jonathan comes from Austin, Texas. Reminds me a lot of Jackie Greene and Ryan Adams. Very deep lyrics, with an emotional delivery on the vocals. This is not for the "surface level" Texas Music fan. If you are tired of the ordinary, then check this one out. I absolutely love this album, may end up being one of my favorites of 2009.

?Had Her And I Lost Her?, ?Wash Your Mouth? en ?Raining Sundays?. ?The Lone Road?, ?Faith Will Provide? en cd-afsluiter ?Chains?. (valsam)

Bio

Not In The Face started as a joke. Two friends in Austin, Texas thought it would be funny to start a cover band playing hyperactive renditions of classic R&B, Doo-Wop, and Rock n Roll songs. The joke ended when their formula was an unexpected hit.

The original twosome, (singer/guitarist) Jonathan Terrell and (drummer) Wes Cargal, formed the group in 2009. The bands word-of-mouth reputation earned them a showcase in the SXSW Music Conference, major market U.S. tours and supporting slots with bands like ZZ Top, Guitar Wolf, Black Lips, and David Allen Coe. They released their first LP Bikini in 2011 to regional acclaim. KUT radio ranked the record in their Top Ten Albums of 2011.

In 2012, Not In The Face released the 4-song Walk EP, which saw the band cranking up the volume even further. The band added firebrand lead guitarist Michael Anthony Gibson the same year. They earned spots in the Fun Fun Fun Festival and national tours with legendary punks X and the Reverend Horton Heat.

In 2013, the band traveled to Vancouver, BC to work with legendary producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Taylor Swift) and co-producer Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, The Jesus Lizard, The Melvins, Biffy Clyro). Soon after, the band added bassist/vocalist Ross Dubois to cement their low end.  The thunderous quartet finished off the year with strings of regional shows and an appearance at the prestigious ACL Festival.

In addition to releasing their new record on February 21, 2014, the band is also planning national tours and future stints to Europe and beyond.
