"Vans Warped Tour 2011 - San Diego"

An unsigned band based out of San Antonio, Texas who made their way to San Diego for a single Warped Tour is Not So Lucky. An interesting moniker for a band who seem headed well on their way to the big time. Not So Lucky performed a super catchy brand of pop punk and easily won the over the San Diego attendees who stopped by the Kia Kevin Says to check them out. Performing songs from their self-released EP Questions and Answers, top tracks in their set included the memorable Haylie, a brand new song entitled Something Great, and their rousing rendition of the Jay Sean song Down. Not So Lucky was playing as a three piece, yet retained their sense of fun and excitement. Only at Warped Tour could an unsigned band from out of town such as Not So Lucky be given a random slot – and Not So Lucky should be commended for a lively show filled with wonderfully infectious tunes. - Kenneth Morton

Bio

Born of school rivalry, and drawn together by mutual respect and the love of the radio, Not So Lucky combines all that is good and right in popular music today. Not just a pop punk band, and not just another group of pretty faces, Not So Lucky are able to combine their musical influences (Fall Out Boy, The Maine, All Time Low) into what has become Questions & Answers, their first EP release set for a January 14th release (available January 10th on iTunes).

The band was formed while singer/songwriter Alexander Gage and drummer Zac Jones were still attending Madison High School. Christian Matthew and Martin O’Shaughnessy were in a band formed at rival MacArthur High School, and were natural rivals on the stage at the White Rabbit nightclub. Over time, though, O’Shaughnessy and Matthews’ band broke up (as many young bands do). Matthew jumped at the opportunity to join the evolving Not So Lucky lineup, followed later by O’Shaughnessy. The now solid quartet was soon packing venues across the city, and drew the attention of AJ Garces. Garces, with a history of classical guitar (taught by his father) and hardcore metal, felt like he could add something to the band. After impressing the group by learning their songs by listening to them on the Internet, Garces was granted an audition show and the rest has been sonic history.

Not So Lucky has consistently packed clubs across Texas, and after a few demos were recorded, traveled to Springfield, Missouri to record Questions & Answers with producer Kevin Gates (The Ready Set). To insure that the production was top notch, they mastered the recordings with Troy Glessner (Anberlin). The finished product: a poppy, rhythmic collection of songs that can easily be heard from one end of the radio dial (traditional Top 40) to the other (Radio Disney). Clean, catchy phrasing in the same vein of Allstar Weekend, and vocals reminiscent of Simple Plan, Not So Lucky successfully breaks away from the heavy metal, hardcore stereotypes of their hometown of San Antonio, Texas, with poppy, catchy songs that all can enjoy.

Not So Lucky is releasing Questions & Answers on Friday, January 14th at the White Rabbit nightclub.
