"Nouveau-Expo"

Nouveau-Expo is a fresh, young band making their way around the San Francisco scene. With Alex Fostar on vocals and guitar, Haley Smith on the bass and vocals, and Andrew Antos on percussion, they form an “indie-folk-pop-awesome” band, according to their Twittter account (http://www.twitter.com/nouveauexpo). The year and a half old band, offers fun songs to sing along with, dance to, and relate to. What’s more, their music is completely original and no song is like any other! From the melodic, sweet single “Nebraska,” to the upbeat “Green,” the threesome focuses on each individual sound and brings them together to create their harmonious music. They met coming into their freshman year at the University of San Francisco and have played music together since. They now have their “Quiet Space EP” out on iTunes, Amazon, and other online music retailers.

On March 22nd, 2011, Nouveau-Expo performed at Bottom of the Hill (http://www.bottomofthehill.com/index.html) in the Mission District, a club where bands such as The Black Keys and Modest Mouse have performed. The band performed their EP songs as well as a new song that they have been working on. About halfway in, Fostar pulled out his harmonica and began his solo while strumming on his guitar as Smith followed along on the bass and Antos pounded his drums.

Fostar, who started out singing in coffeehouses in Denmark, which is one of the places he is from, says he writes his songs based on his experiences, especially from the three different regions he has known—California, the Midwest, and Denmark. He says, “I try to bring the experiences in my life to the audience.” His music is his take on what he sees. While writing about places and landscapes, he tries to stray away from the basic love song, but says, “It gets there anyway.”
Also on his writing, Fostar recalls that a lot of his lyrics contrast each other and he says this is on purpose. In fact, he says it “magnifies everyday life.” On top of that, he tries not to write in the first person. He claims that including everyone is much “more interesting.”

With all the instruments that support the music, he would like all the songs to be able to be sung alone. “A lot of the songs today are so electronic, and I want them to be able to be stripped down.” Some of his influences include Conor O’Berst and Bob Dylan while Smith’s influences include Emily Haines and Mark Hoppus and Antos influence is Jack White.

Fostar’s main goal is to be to support himself playing music. He just needs enough to survive. He says, “Just to be able to sustain it.”

Don’t miss this amazing band in action! Their next show is April 16th at UC Davis for the Pic Nic Day Festival and following that there is a show on April 22nd at the Rockit Room in SF performing with the bands Wild Son and Dylan Fox and The Wave.

Bio

Nouveau-Expo is an indie-rock band from San Francisco, CA. Consisting of frontman Alexander Fostar, keyboardist Kayleigh Mack, and drummer Andrew Antos, the trio creates indie rock-pop distinctly different from the rest. With dance-happy guitar riffs, intricate bass lines, steady beats, their sound is solidified with passionate, sweet vocal harmonies. Drawing upon numerous influences such as Bob Dylan, Conor Oberst, Jack White, and Amy Milan of Stars, the group produces music that is fun and innovative, ultimately culminating in spectacular live performances that keep audiences on their toes.

At the CCSF 75th Annual Battle of the Bands, GRAMMY-nominated producer Rebeca Mauleon recently compared frontman Alexander Fostar's on-stage energy to Joe Cocker. She also stated that Andrew Antos' stage pressence is one of the best she has ever seen in a drummer.

Andrew Antos has studied under Dawn Richardson who is widely know for playing with 4 Non-Blondes. Additionally, Alex Fostar has studied under Christopher Hoyer, lead guitarist/singer of the band Envelope in Copenhagen, Denmark.
