"Why don't radio stations play music like this any more? by A. Bell"

5.0 out of 5 stars Why don't radio stations play music like this any more?, May 13, 2009
By A. Bell (USA) - This review is from: Cosmic Queen (Audio CD)
I started listening to the tracks for this album after seeing the "All My Life" video posted on YouTube.

What a gorgeous video. I am so hooked. It keeps playing in my head all the time. I want someone professor somewhere to come out of the computer and tell me what it all means.

Anyhow: this is kind of non-cheesy, neo-lounge music, with a little electronica in it, but not in an obviously electronica way. It's sort of organic-linen electronic, as opposed to European disco electronica.

Gina DiDonato has a deep, lived-in kind of voice.

The arrangements are varied and complex.

Anyhow, this is the sort of music that radio stations would be playing if they were playing an updated version of the kind of music that, say, Linda Ronstadt, Chicago, Gerry Rafferty and Crosby Stills & Nash were doing in the 1970s. Melodic, low-key, sophisticated, non-whiny music that is neither saccarhine nor intentionally edgy, aimed at adults born between the Big Band era and the whiny caterwauling era.

Big band music is great. Whiny caterwauling adult contemporary moaning-around-music is not my cup of tea, but if other people like it, good for them. But why has the music industry so completely shut out neo-Gerry Rafferty music? Golden oldies and classic rock stations still play that kind of music. So, why is there so little room for the next generation of that kind of music? - Amazon.com

HISTORY AND MEMBERS

Guitarist, songwriter Frankie DiDonato first met Gina when she moved into the basement apartment next to his; truly "the girl next door". Gina had moved from her native Bulgaria where she was the youngest performer in the national theater and instrumental in fusing musical styles. Chasing her musical dreams she met DiDonato. The two began performing Bossa Nova and Jazz standards as "Nova Duo" and the seeds for Nova Columbo were planted.

Trumpet great and former Art Blakey Jazz Messenger Valery Ponomarev next joined the duo. Bassists Steve Watson and multi instrumentalist Keiji have shared the Bass chair throughout the years. Percussion virtuoso's John Hadfeild (John has worked with everyone from Jon Faddis to Yo Yo Ma) and Kazumi studied world percussion together and lay down the foundation for Columbo's eclectic fire. Composer and versatile pianist Gary Negbaur joins them on keyboards. The latest band member is the great saxophonists Atsuishi Anouchie and Fotios Anthonasou. Their powerful styles are a thrilling addition on Alto, Tenor, Flute and Clarinet.

Nova Columbo is also available in smaller ensembles besides the full 7 piece band, from the core dynamic duo
