Bio

In July of 2008, five good friends from Phoenix embarked on a journey that would give way to the creation of one of today’s most inspiring new bands and one of 2009’s most exciting records. Together with the Grammy nominated and Dove award winning duo of producer Steve Hindalong and engineer Derri Daugherty, who had just wrapped up production on the latest Sixpence None the Richer record, they watched their songs become their proudest accomplishment to date. Their trip to Nashville to record at Sled Dog, not only gave way to their flagship opus, but drew them closer together than ever before. An exciting new record and a new friendship with two of their musical heroes has given NovaLux new life and a new perspective.

With a solid debut record under their sleeves, NovaLux is setting off in serious pursuit of their musical aspirations. NovaLux is all about the live show, and audience members are routinely treated to a tightly packaged, fresh, explosive mess of sound and emotion. As of spring 2009, they started making waves in the Phoenix music scene by playing many different venues in and around Tempe and Scottsdale. They were also privileged to receive an invitation from The Whisky a Go Go, where they wowed the crowd with their fresh, passionate take on ‘piano rock’. With their widely appealing pop/rock sound, NovaLux has been compared to such bands as Sunny Day Real Estate, Ben Fold’s Five, Mute Math, Coldplay, The Fray, and One Republic.

Formed in 2008, NovaLux is comprised of five equally passionate musicians, who enjoy the collaboration and camaraderie that comes with a committed band comprised of five good friends – frontman and keyboardist Tyler Huston, guitarists Troy Roberts and Paul Sultana, drummer Dan Mock, and bassist Mike Symons. Their combined musical resume shows a limitless devotion to their craft. From the age of ten, Tyler began to explore song-writing on a Casio keyboard, and he is constantly striving to outdo himself; pushing his limits and ignoring implied boundaries that other artists seem to settle for. Inspired by guitar heroes Phil Keaggy and Jimi Hendrix, Paul picked up the guitar at age ten and went on to start writing his own material. Since then, he has had the privilege of recording with renowned producers, Andy Seagle and Robert Scoville. Also an early starter, Dan Mock was trained in jazz starting from age ten. One highlight in his musical education was the opportunity to receive instruction from drummer, Jeff Ballard. His interest in jazz has given him an uncommon take on pop/rock drumming and has made him a unique asset to NovaLux. As a schoolteacher, Dan has been sharing his love of music for the last four years. Mike Symons got his start as a member of his high school choir and drum line. He also spent many of his formative years playing the violin. As a bass player, he and Dan have been playing music together since 1999, making them an extraordinarily solid rhythm section and uniquely in tune with one another. For Troy, his passion for music has led him to the world of professional audio, in both studio and live environments. For ten years he served as the head sound engineer for a large church, where he developed his ear and his ability to execute what he desired. As a guitarist, Troy has taken his obsession with perfect tone and placed it comfortably into the context of NovaLux’s vigorous sound.

The friends who comprise NovaLux couldn't be more excited about their recent experiences and the possibilities on their horizon. As fresh and current as their sound is, a respected Scottsdale club owner recently compared Tyler to the timeless musical icon, Paul McCartney. NovaLux is most definitely an up and coming band to keep your eye on, and with all their passion and talent they are sure to enjoy longevity in the music industry.
