Broken Record

Written By: Mark Richardson

Broken Record
(c) June 2006

There have been a lot of records broken lately,
I suppose you’ve noticed too.
Between the droughts and rains and hurricanes,
The weather is headline news.
But you don’t hear much about consequence,
It’s business as usual; dollars and cents,
And taking the political view.

Leaders sounding like a broken record lately,
I suppose you’ve heard it too.
They keep hiding behind the same old lies,
Like they don’t know what to do.
It’s so much like a vinyl scratch:
The stylus gets stuck; there’s always a catch,
With anything they might do.

It sounds just like the same old tune:
Spinning round yet getting nowhere,
Like broken records do.
Spinning round yet getting nowhere,
Like broken records do

We’re living in a world we give no priority…
Disregarded in the need to please the economy.
Humanity is placed in this position,
To satisfy corporate minded politicians…
They’re on a mission.

All records are made to be broken,
Politicians are nothing new.
So forget the blame so we can gain.
And organise what we can do
Because I’m sick of the stylus remaining static,
Avoiding what’s considered too problematic,
Such as people like me and you.

It sounds just like the same old tune:
Spinning round yet getting nowhere,
Like broken records do
Spinning round yet getting nowhere,
Like broken records do
Like broken records do. Like broken records do
Do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do. Do-do-do-do
Do.

Closer To London

Closer to London

Lyrics-Keith Murphy. Music-Mark Richardson.Feb/00

Well I’ve never been to London or seen it’s postcard sights
I’m happy here my mind is clear cold in July
Be close to you is all I do to have the world be right
But I’m closer to London than I am to you tonight

Well I’m closer to London than I am to you
closer to London and as confused
I’d try again if there was something left to do
closer to London than I am to you

I walk up and down the verandah while you’re in your bed
Over and over searching through things we did and said
What’s the mistake what went wrong it won’t leave my head
Is there something else a sign misread something still unsaid

Ch then Bridge

The distant call of the night birds a chill in the air
The cold I feel is just as real rejection and despair
Your distance and resistance hurts like a tear
I just can’t bear what we can’t share
I need you now and you’re not there

Over and over I keep on remembering things we did and said
Searching for something a misunderstanding it won’t leave my head
Hating the hurting and now we’re so separate it seems so unfair
I reach out and you’re not there

Well I’m closer to London than I am to you
closer to London and as confused
I’d try again if there was something left to do
closer to London than I am to you
repeat last line X4 to end
