Aside from the coveted yet traditional tunes that come from each regional area, you’d be astonished to find out the homeland of this insightful artist. The 23 yr-old MC/ Producer Anticio “N-Tense” Duke boasts of his particular style, “I rhyme like the state that I’m from; that’s ILL”, clearly informs his listener of his native grounds. Born in a small town outside of Chicago, (Joliet, ILL) this talented percussion based artist was destined to produce his own sound.
Rhyming since the age of 16, N-Tense crafted his wisdomic wordplay from the streets of Camden, New Jersey earning his name from the freestyle battle scene but it wasn’t until the age of 19 when he released his first solo album “UPPERGROUND”. The album only sold 6500 copies on college campuses because of its poor quality and promotion. “I admit the quality of the album was horrid but I believe that people could still hear the potential so I appreciate their support,” he recalls about the albums’ unsuccessful numbers.
N-Tense’s second opportunity to reveal to the world his skill was in 2002 with the completion of his sophomore album “N-TENSITY” but wasn’t released because of creative differences and indie label deterioration. “It became a conflict of interest with my manager at the time,” he states adamantly. With lines like “Claim’n that we hip hop cats are wack and always underground/ I flow under and above it – you can’t help but to love it/ (Hence: The 1st album’s title.) and also a collection of rhyme schemes like / I’m a real rap repeating rebel/ the reason why you can’t spit with me cause you still rhyming on Lil Romeo’s level/ pose the question of true unsigned hype.
Nonetheless, as a full time engineering student and a part time technical components designer, only a miracle would assist him in his musical pursuit. Now with the new release of the LP “N-SIGHT”, his 3rd time is a charm motto is sure to catch on quickly. The project includes rich and soulful chords, fulfilling baselines with precedent percussion layered with a potently polished, conscious minded flow will definitely have the masses and the underground heads alike agreeing that the ILL state is not just the state that he is from; but also what he rhymes like!
Furthermore, Mr. Duke has received extensive recognition on his journey of paying dues with bookings alongside major acts such as: Cappadona of the Wu-Tang Clan, Cee-Lo, Twista and a host of others. From the positive feedback from dedicated fans to ongoing request of his onstage musical showcasing, N-TENSE defines his own moniker. With his current LP “N-SIGHT” flooding college campuses and music listeners’ playlists, he has yet to prevail victorious.
