"Ethnotempos"

During the nearly thirty years he dedicated to the development of new traditional music, Miquèu MONTANARO's main concern was, and has always been, to create exchanges between different cultures, to dig passageways, to build footbridges, and to be certain that this alliance would hold true, even to build bridges! The Bridge Over The Sea is the outcome of a project conceived over a dozen years ago, uniting Arabo-Andalusian music, or Andalusian - North African music, and his own culture from his homeland in Province, to create a bridge linking the two Mediterranean cultures. With the support of the greatly respected Smaïn HINI and Naguib KATEB, our "globe-trotter from Province" accomplished the creation of a new nouba, the thousand-year old genre that is considered to be one of the noblest foundations of North-African classical music.

(…) The bringing together of traditions (Arabian-Andalusian and traditional music from Provence) is all the more meaningful as the nouba is regarded as also having influenced French medieval music, where-in the interest in it's development, so making the nouba a magnificent journey through time and different worlds. The "nouba of the 25th hour" has already had the occasion to be played in several French venues, as well as at The North-African Academy of Classical Music in Fès. The recording of this new nouba took place in April, 2004 in Oujda, Morocco, before a very cultivated audience, connoisseurs who did not hesitate in welcoming this seafaring bridge of the 21st century, made up of a collection of different periods in history and lively arrangements. The complete integration of "the nouba of the 25th hour" into the North-African-Andalusian Music repertoire, as a respected musical entity alongside the traditional nouba (transmitted in the oral tradition over the centuries) is proof of it's artistic and aesthetic viability.

To absorb and give way to ... there-in lies Miquèu MONTANARO's dialectic. If he builds bridges over deep waters, it is indeed so that the others will be able to make their way across.

"Yves Rousguito"

A monster, I tell you! On stage, Miqueù MONTANARO is so to speak at the same moment a Tarasque (legendary monster) who could transform any movement into a musical gesture, but also a dragon with three mouths to quench its polyphonic thirst, and a lion handling four sledgehammers with such virtuosity, that even his tambourine, with its strength from Province, can still not believe the world's admiration. Miqueù MONTANARO is a monster I tell you ! - Yves Rousguito

Bio

Cie Montanaro has been formed in 2001. Based in the south of France, in deep of Provence in a small village named Correns. Cie Montanaro is the tool in Miquèu Montanaro's hands to achieve his creative work. It continues his habits of musical dialogues and exchanges that he has since many years. It helps to increase public awareness about Montanaro's music.
Several shows have been created since the Compagnie exists : Ora Daurada & Calènda (2002), Opéra Dòna (2003) and Mathis (2004). Un Provençal au Château is on schedule in 2005. What is in common in these creations, except Miquèu Montanaro himself, is the will of the meeting between different languages. The meeting could be between instruments of different origins, between music and video, between traditional and classical music ...

NUBA OF THE 25th HOUR is the way to explore links between provencal and arabo andalusian music.
There existed already 24 noubas (half of which were lost, not having been transmitted through the generations). With the help of Smaïn Hini and Naguib Kateb, Miquèu Montanaro composed a “nouba of the 25th hour“. A worldly nouba unconnected with religion, respecting the forms used in the past while renewing the genre. That is to say a musical genre that is full of life, relevant to the period in which it exists, that renews itself and adapts to its own environment.
