"How Local Duo Nu.F.O. Is Breaking The “EDM” Mold"

As it currently stands EDM is becoming an electronic revolution. This trend bears a resemblance to rock and roll of the past. Younger generations are accepting this music with open arms. While older generations seem to have nothing but hate in their hearts towards electronic music.

But regardless of how you feel for this music, there is no arguing that electronic music is changing the way we think about music. Producers are pushing the boundaries and experimenting with all different kinds of sounds.

Many critics complain that EDM has become too mainstream. They’re not wrong either. Many mainstream electronic music sounds the same and follows the same formula. But this has caused a movement within “EDM”. Many producers are sick of the generic sound, and have striven to create something new and different within electronic music. Producers are getting back to their musical roots and trying to create a more live electronic experience.

A perfect example is local duo Nu.F.O. Currently touring with the iExperia tour, Nu.F.O. is a live electronic experience unlike what you’ve come to expect from “EDM”. They’re not just DJs using CDJs and mixing in the traditional sense. They’ve created a unique experience, by performing their original vocals and productions live. At their recent stop at the House of Blues Boston this past Friday I got the chance to talk with duo Moses and Eric about Nu.F.O.

How did NuFO form and what does it stand for?

Moses: It stands for Newly Formed Objective. The reason that we’re called that is because Eric and I both used to play; previous to this project, in rock bands. And we both have a mutual fandom of electronic music. We met through our bands and you know we were sharing music back and forth. We love all the same music, we love electronic music and rock. Eventually our projects dissolved and we fell out of love with them or whatever

Eric: There were a couple times we tried to get him to join the band, and he was doing something else. It didn’t work out with scheduling.

Moses: When we finally got together we asked ourselves, what are we doing with this project? When we were in a rock band, we were trying to make people bang their heads, now where trying to make people dance and Jump. So we have a new objective, we have a new goal we’re reaching towards, so that’s how we came to newly formed objective (New-F-O)

What were some of the original influences that inspired NuFO?

Moses: It’s incredibly vast, and what you’ll find if you listen to our catalog is that we basically don’t stick to one genre. Our motto is basically fuck genres.

Eric: Originally Prodigy, Paul Oakenfold, Sneakerpimps which is obscure but electronic with vocals. Obviously Deadmau5, Kaskade, Knife party.

Moses: I’m big into cats like Keys N Crates, who I think are so fucking talented. I think they’re not a perfect corollary to what we do, but it’s similar. They’re taking electronic music they’re putting a different unique spin on it, and they’re doing a live performance.

If you were to go back and look at those very beginning DJ sets and compare them to sets you play now, whats the biggest difference?

Eric: Confidence, me especially because , he’s (Moses) been a singer for a while , but this project is the first I’ve been on stage with a mic in my hand and our second show was here at House of Blues, it was a big jump from not being used to that. I was really nervous a lot but the comfort has come, and with that it’s gotten more fun since I’m not as nervous and you get to enjoy it more, and I think that we’re incorporating more and more live sampling and triggering and stuff as we go.

Moses: with that confidence comes a lot more energy and the ability to read what the crowd wants, and playing to that. And also allowing that to influence our writing.

"When we started playing ‘Don’t Bail Out’ live, the response from the crowd was just unbelievable, we were just like holy shit okay, we’re on to something here, how do we go down this path without doing the same thing as everyone else."

Explain how your live performance works, how often do you get on the Mic and sing?

Moses: So, I would say that I probably sing 60% of the time lead vocals, whereas Eric is 40% of the time, but he’s very much a lead vocal. We harmonize with each other constantly, so even though he may not be singing a lead or I might not be signing a lead, we tend to support each other’s vocals, because were big fans of what you can do with harmony in order to make a vocal sound even bigger.

Eric: It’s very much not set up like a typical DJ.

It’s more of a live show?

Eric: Ya, I don’t want to say electronic band, but like every song we do have vocals in it, and the songs are written like songs not tracks, so their written for vocals, so while we still obviously have drops and instrumental moments and we play into that, it’s all working around the vocals.

Moses: While we both have unbelievable respect for DJs and the “EDM” scene, we just chose to try and do something different.

Eric: And stand out in a different way

On Future Productions:

Eric: We have a track coming out on the Boston together festival compilation, which is kind of a different sound for us, its down-tempo, and trappy. We have a collaboration coming out Instant Party. He killed the production on that, so its going to be exciting to see what that does. We got an acoustic orchestra remix we’re working on for one of the tracks on the record, like violins and string and all that kind of stuff, to show a different side

Moses: That’s us sticking to our fuck genres motto. Why can’t we do an orchestral fucking track?! We should!

On choosing the right gigs:

Eric: our goal is to not overextend ourselves and play too much, and really to choose the right shows that we’re gunna have the biggest impact. Think about if you could see the same artist every weekend, what’s special about that? we don’t wanna wear out our welcome so to speak and basically just space out the shows, and in addition to that the fact that we’ve now have released a record we actually have enough material to do the ability to do longer sets, we’re starting to explore were we can take our style of performance.

Its people like Nu.F.O. that are leading the way in electronic music. Now a days just about anyone can DJ or produce on some sort of level with a little money. But there’s nothing special about following the herd. What is special is those artists that blaze their own trail.

The ones that are doing something different. Nu.F.O. actively strives to challenge the status quo of electronic music by simply being original. And its only a matter of time before others follow suit. This kind of live performance is undoubtedly the recipe for the future of live performance.

"Nu.F.O Lay Waste To Genres With Their New Single “The New Kid”"

Boston based electronic group Nu.F.O have been making waves with their live shows and genre bending tracks. Now, Eric & Moses are gearing up for their debut album “Stil Amazed” with their latest single “The New Kid”. “Still Amazed” will be a concept record showing the life and musical journey of the dynamic duo and will be as fun to watch as it will be to listen to as they illustrate each chapter with a visual coinciding with the record. This is a massive undertaking but if their history as a group has proven, this guys are not afraid to break the norm when it comes to electronic music.

“The New Kid” is a little bit of drum and bass, a little bit of rock, hip hop and electro. Which sounds like a heavy mix but they pull it off flawlessly with outstanding production and live vocals. This track is a fast paced assault on musical genres and the lyrics will light up your ears with honesty that you usually never get out of your usual EDM record. Highlighted by hard hitting fast paced drums, outstanding vocal performances, grimey basslines and brilliant synth work.

At a time where everyone keeps debating who’s really a “DJ” and how electronic music should be performed, groups like Nu.F.O make all these debates seem futile. They’re one of the few artists willing to step out and just do what they think is dope and that’s what has audiences around the scene flocking to their set and sounds. Rocking crowds with live vocals and live production, these are the types of groups that should be getting the most support in the electronic scene because it is undoubtedly the future of music. The album will be out soon and if this record is any indication, it will be a fantastic musical journey.

Bostonian EDM’ers should be infused with a new sense of pride after digging the new collaboration between hometown boys NU.F.O and The Bolivian Marching Affair called “Don’t Bail Out.” Don’t Bail Out, which is track 5 off of NU.F.O’s upcoming concept album Still Amazed, not only has insane melody, hard-hitting bass and CRAZY energy (aptly showcased in the video above), but is also propelled by wailing rock and roll vocals that give this a unique element to make it stand out in a genre plagued by generic music. Although it may seem a bit of a head-scratcher pair at first, Don’t Bail Out has us hoping NU.F.O and TBMA join forces again sooner rather than later.

"NU.F.O. – Quest [Free Download]"

Continuing with their monthly releases that slowly unveil their Still Amazed album/video project, NU.F.O. dropped their latest song “Quest” yesterday. The duo’s aim of disintegrating genre lines seems to warrant something even more momentous each time they bring something into the world. “Quest” is a fusion of house and pop with vocals that have a similar vibe as alternative rock from the early 2000′s. It’s indeed a journey, but you are going to want it to last longer than the five minutes that you get. That’s what repeat is for though.
