Bio
The Internationally renowned New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, founded in 1994, features a unique mixture of Jamaican ska, reggae and rocksteady blended with American jazz, funk blues and soul. Armed with a strong knowledge and mastery of both the jazz and ska genres, the result is an explosive mix of extremely danceable grooves supporting highly sophisticated jazz improvisation. The new genre created by this ska supergroup has gained legions of fans all over the world and their style is emulated and revered by musicians young and old with "ska-jazz" groups from as far away as the Italy, Holland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Indonesia and Russia citing the NYSJE as their major influence. The NYSJE have released eight critically acclaimed albums (reviewed by Downbeat, Jazziz, Alternative Press, CMJ, etc) and played some of the largest and most prestigious jazz, reggae and pop festivals in the world including the North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), Montreal, Toronto and Quebec City Jazz Festivals (Canada), Jazz in Marciac (France), Rock For People (Czech Republic), Dour Festival (Belgium), Pohoda Festival (Slovakia), Ett Festival (Switzerland), Bob Marley Reggae Festival (US), Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival (US) and Discover Jazz Festival (US) among countless others. The NYSJE have shared stages with numerous jazz, ska, pop and reggae luminaries including the Skatalites, REM, Sonny Rollins, Pat Metheney, Wynton Marsalis, The Wailers, Manu Chao, Ziggy Marley, Alpha Blondie, Special Beat and many others. They were the backing band for Jamaican rocksteady legend Laurel Aitken throughout Europe and the US in 1998 and also hold the distinction of being the first American ska band to play in Poland after the Berlin Wall fell. The NYSJE have been featured in two national radio campaigns for Campbell's Soup, Spanish, Italian, French, Brazilian and Venezuelan national radio and television, the Discovery Channel, MTV (USA, Italy and Brazil) and can be heard on many of MTV's reality shows such as the "Real World" and "Road Rules".
This winter (2008) marks the 32nd European tour for the NYSJE, the release of their ninth studio record entitled STEP FORWARD, a live CD recorded at the famed Paris jazz club, New Morning, and a live DVD recorded in Belgium. Currently boasting some of the finest talent in the ska, reggae and jazz worlds, the NYSJE is poised to explode even further into the worldwide mainstream consciousness. They play to audiences totaling over a hundred thousand people every year assuring that the NYSJE, and the genre they created, will continue to thrive.
