"Obduktion - Awaiting the Wicked - 94%"

Here is another quite compact review for a short but nevertheless tasty piece of metal mayhem. This time we got another winner from the beautiful country of Greece which is home to some of the most exciting music that has been produced over the past few years. So it does not come as a surprise that “Awaiting the Wicked” is another stunning example of traditional death metal. What surprised me though is the fact that Obduktion have been making music together for more than two decades and beside having released a bunch of demos, splits and EPs this is already full length number four.

While Obduktion play it quite safe here and do not try to reinvent the wheel they have produced a thundering piece of hard and aggressive music. The sound is very raw and filthy putting enough dirt into the music. The riffing is straight-forward for most parts departing from the main path only in exceptional cases. Similarities can be mainly drawn to US bands like Obituary etc. There is something about the stoic nature of the trademark chords in combination with the rattling drum patterns that feels fascinating and hypnotical.

The tempo is kept within the mid-tempo region for the most part with a few well-placed groovier parts. Those slower sections as well as some dark sounding harmonies are great for building a sinister atmosphere. Often those parts are accompanied by great solos before the main riffs kick back in. The drumming is on point keeping the tempo with ease and adding some nice fills without ever getting to chaotic. The guys have a feeling for songwriting knowing when to ramp up the intensity and when to relax a little bit. The structure of the tracks is pretty straight-forward without coming across as being too simple or boring.

One aspect that can make or break an old school death metal band is the singer. I am glad to report that Takis is a great talent. His tone is reminding of Dave Hunt or Ola Lindgren and his delivery is top notch. Although he is roaring like an ancient beast each word can be perfectly understood. Unfortunately this is not always the case these days with actual releases.

With a playing time of less than 30 minutes “Awaiting the Wicked” is not necessarily the longest album. However, what really counts is the quality of the music which is top notch here. The production is also powerful with a lot of punch and the mix being perfectly clear. Fans of that raw and straight-forward death metal sound that has been produced by bands like Benediction or Bolt Thrower in the past should take notice and put this album on their list. -

"Mors Janua Vitae"

These two tracks, were created catchy for entertaining, headbang and full authenticity of death metal that does not disappear, when we heard each tempo and every rhythm of their musical grooves. ' Mors Janua Vitae ', comes to bring the old death metal face that the first ever made, and now back born, to scratch itchiness in these ears through a stab-puncture that stimulating by their brightness in dismantling the old death metal's rhythm, this is really impressive and sorely missed...] [...' Mors Janua Vitae ' makes it easy for the mind to imagine about something painful. Conveniently and full of pride, ' Mors Janua Vitae ' whipping this body, not the pain that we are getting, but has taste to hooked that stimulate the brain to hear and waiting for the other great works who entertains and reminisce of them This is really a momentum and contains full of their maturity - Metalbleeding Corp

"Mors Janua Vitae EP review"

We have no doubt heard it repeatedly, even though, it consisted of just two songs. An EP entitled ' Mors Janua Vitae ' of 'Obduktion', rather than just give a classic clash of early death metal, but these two tracks, were created catchy for entertaining, headbang and full authenticity of death metal that does not disappear, when we heard each tempo and every rhythm of their musical grooves. ' Mors Janua Vitae ', comes to bring the old death metal face that the first ever made, and now back born, to scratch itchiness in these ears through a stab-puncture that stimulating by their brightness in dismantling the old death metal's rhythm, this is really impressive and sorely missed.

Harmonious, tight and firm, as well as having the stability of tempo, surely we get if heard the concept of old death metal, including this EP. 'Obduktion' from Greece, also enclose moans of melodies that really creates a lot of nuances when hearing it. Highly integrated and harmonic. The first song entitled ' King of Terrors ', answer all our attractiveness to hear the concept of the old death metal they play, the song is more dynamic than the second track later. This song also give an epiphany to us that have long not listen to the crotch of death metal like this . The second track entitled ' Lordship of Superior ', more powerful in bringing the sense of old death metal. Ruthless, aggressive, stinging the smell of blood and really nailing a sense of classic.

With a duration of six minutes , and with just two songs, the album titled ' Mors Janua Vitae ', have managed to bring us to death metal era in 90s. Hubris and harmony of the classic death metal still preserved, without changing the tempo, rhythm and the principles of true death metal. Cool and always want to reminisce.

For us, ' Mors Janua Vitae ' makes it easy for the mind to imagine about something painful. Conveniently and full of pride, ' Mors Janua Vitae ' whipping this body, not the pain that we are getting, but has taste to hooked that stimulate the brain to hear and waiting for the other great works who entertains and reminisce of them This is really a momentum and contains full of their maturity. - Metal Addicts

"Mors Janua Vitae EP 2014 Review"

What’s not to like about a nice death metal EP with only two songs? Well, there’s the possibility of you not liking death metal at all, but that’s besides the point. Obduktion’s latest EP “Mors Janua Vitae” has, as you might have guessed by now, only two songs, but that doesn’t mean the quality is bad or those songs are just scraps that they just felt like throwing at us. Quite the contrary. Both tracks from the EP have great sound and feel to them that I found extremely enjoyable. As a death metal fan I was able to connect and dig these songs very easily and almost in an instant after I hit that play button. They are fast paced, unrelenting death metal songs that I’ve no doubt whatsoever in my mind that just about any fan out there can find at least one thing to love in this EP, and if not then listen to it again. And if that doesn’t work, listen to Obduktion’s previous work. - Head-Banger Reviews (Vinterd)

"Gig report supporting ABSU @An Club Athens, Greece 10/9/2011"

[...Yet they did achieve to entertain some of the mainly ‘cold’ attendees, with their 30 minute set. Watching them again after so many years I must say they have now the strongest line-up. Their drummer and singer are both awesome...] - Giorgos Karagiannis - Metal Kaoz

"Pain Chronicles cd 2011 review"

[...Pain Chronicles, is, naturally, a death metal opus...] [...the precision-oriented massive riffage, the ‘bang that head’ mid-tempo relentless drumming, quite/relatively modernize the album. However, it is the tight/fresh sound/ production that really make this album sound as of our era...] [...Pain Chronicles is a gore, misanthropic manifesto that reaches to the ideal of futility...] [...Pain Chronicles is an all in all, release of death metal largeness...] [...an accessible album, yet a butchering one...] Grade: 8/10 - Stelios Panayiotakis - Subexistance Metal Online Magazine

"Pain Chronicles cd 2011 review"

[...Pain Chronicles successfully chronicles a shit load of excruciating pain, and compounds it in just 28 minutes to successfully complete a blistering crash course in brutality...] [...for those of us entrenched in all things distorted, down-tuned and growled, this is quite an appreciable slice of brutality, and the involuntary clenching of my fist is a sign that many fellow death metal fans will also enjoy it...] 7/10 - Aly Hassab El Naby - Chronicles Of Chaos

"Pain Chronicles cd 2011 review"

[...Prevails a generalised atmosphere in the album without of course this is their characteristic element...] [...What characterizes the compositions of OBDUKTION is the passion, the force and certain very well solos and riffs...] [...Pain Chronicles is a very good moment and uncontradictable constitutes a exceptional choice for a fan of Death Metal music gerne...] - Dimitris (Lazdi) - Hardcity Rock Hard & 'N' Heavy Zine

"II cd 2008 review"

[...II is a continuation of what the band has created until now. Brutal Death Metal with mostly mid tempo rhythms and heavy as fuck riffing...] [...OBDUKTION is all about heaviness and slow yet deadly brutality. Drawing influences from acts like DEICIDE, OBITUARY and BOLT THROWER, the band unleashes its fierce Death Metal assault leaving nothing standing...] - Yiannis Dafopoulos - Metal Temple

"II cd 2008 review"

[...II has a bit of a paced blasts, crushing riffs & thick deep Death growls. They have a strong old school vibe, but there are some more technical sounding new school parts as well. These guys have been at it for over 10 years now, so give them some attention they deserve!...] - Beowolf - Threats From The Underground Extreme Music Magazine

"Gig report supporting Handful Of Hate @An Club Athens, Greece 28/10/2007"

[... OBDUKTION started this live and for about 45 minutes bombed the audience with their death metal, which is well-worked and with enough personal touch. Nice vocals, impressing headbanging from the rhythm guitarist and a band that has continual development...] - Yiannis Doukas - Metal Temple

"The Day Of Massacre promo review"

[...The Day Of Massacre is a meticulously crafted promo cd...] [...It consists of two really vicious death metal tracks carved in the mood of the old ways...] [...The guitars oscillate between slow but fierce riffs and ferocious fast passages, forming primordial sounding. Some riffs reminded me of the good old DEATH. The soft brutality of the vocals intensifies the dark and primitive feelings that emerge from the two tracks. A sturdy bass and some good, speedy drumbeats complete this fine musical work...] [...this promising band has a lot to offer not only to the Greek death metal, but also to the entire death metal scene...] 8/10 - Chris Manouras - Metal Temple

Bio

Obduktion are a Greek death metal band from Athens, originally founded in 1995 by George ”Obduktor” Bitzos. Influenced by bands like Bolt Thrower, Obituary and Deicide started developing their own sound which, through several demo releases and live performances, can be found in the band’s debut album “Encounter in a dream”, released in 2002 by NMC music. Obduktor decides to focus on being the main guitarist and composer so the band is officially looking for a new singer. It was the year 2004 when talented vocalist Takis “V.O.T.” Dakoulias, former member of local band Darkness It Shall Be, and Obduktion joined forces. After many lineup changes, the band recorded their second full-length album “II”, released in 2008. Through the years, Obduktion gained experience by doing many gigs and supporting bands like Asphyx, Absu, Belphegor, Kaamos,Terrorizer, Enthroned, Arkhon Infaustus, Deviser and Handful of Hate. In nowadays and through audience’s appreciation, they are a so called “Cult Hellenic death metal” band. After the band having established a unique music identity based in aggressive riffs, technical solos and brutal attitude and with a strong line-up, they composed brand new death metal songs. In 2011 they released their third full-length album titled “Pain Chronicles”. And we reach 2018 where the band signs with polish label  Goressimo record for the fourth foul length cd "Awaiting the Wicked". The long and devoted path of the group until now, but also the insatiable wish of its members for music, guaranties the continuing of this attempt, and the desirable recognition from its audience. At this moment the group's members are: Obduktor: Guitar Takis V.O.T: Vocals Nikos: Bass Giannis: Drums .Releases: • "First blood and the darkness inside" 1996 demo • "Near death experience" 1998 demo • "Silence" 1999 demo • "Break the silence" 2000 promo • "Day of massacre" 2001 promo • "Encounter in a dream" 2002 full-length cd • "The lost angel of our soul" 2004 7" EP • "11 Years Obduktion" Special Promo Edition 2007 • "Cover In Blood" 2008 E.P. • "II" 2008 full-length cd • "Pain Chronicles" 2011 full length cd • "Mors Janua Vitae" 2014 EP  • "Awaiting the wicked " full length cd 2018
