Interview: OBERER TOTPUNKT - "Geboren, um zu sterben"
Nach dem Album ist vor dem Album: gerade mal zwei Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung ihres vielbeachteten dritten Albums „Stiller Zoo“ werkelt die Hamburger Formation OBERER TOTPUNKT bereits fleißig am vierten Silberling.

Als Appetithappen gab es bereits kurz vor Weihnachten "Langfristig gesehen sind wir alle tot", mit "(Das ist nicht) Meine Welt" steht demnächst eine weitere Vorab-Veröffentlichung samt Video an. „Desiderat“, so der Titel des neuen Longplayers, wird sich voraussichtlich im Sommer/Herbst 2012 erst auf die Menschheit und die Tanzflächen der hiesigen Clubs, ab Juni dann auch ins neue Live-Set ergießen. Die Zutaten für ihr außergewöhnliches Gebräu: eine, wie sie selbst sagen, „energiegeladene Fusion aus Spoken-word, Dark Electronic, Industrial und Avantgarde“, gewürzt mit düsteren Texten über allerlei menschliche und gesellschaftliche Abgründe. Dass trotz aller Schwarzmalerei kein fahler Beigeschmack auf der Zunge zurückbleibt, verdanken OBERER TOTPUNKT ihrem eigenwilligen Gesamtkonzept, bei der Literatur und Musik zu einem ebenso hypnotisierenden wie tanzbaren Hörspiel verschmelzen. Was genau es mit diesem außergewöhnlichen Musikprojekt auf sich hat (und noch so einiges mehr), verrieten die beiden Masterminds Michael Krüger (Songwriting, Schlagzeug) und Bettina Bormann (Songwriting, Gesang) im Interview.







sP: Den Oberen Totpunkt kannten bis zur Veröffentlichung eures Debutalbums vor vier Jahren vermutlich nur Automechaniker und Technik-Begeisterte, in eurem Fall ist er Synonym für Grenzsituationen und namensgebend. Stellt sich natürlich die Frage, welche Grenzsituation zur Namensgebung/ Bandgründung führte.


Bettina: Tatsächlich war die Namensgebung keine so aufregende Angelegenheit. Der Terminus geisterte schon länger in meinem Kopf herum - und als die Band konkret wurde, war er einfach plötzlich da. Und das Bild ist ja auch überzeugend: Der Obere Totpunkt kennzeichnet den Punkt, an dem die Figuren entweder durchstarten oder scheitern. Es ist der Punkt, an dem für einen Moment alles offen ist.

Michael: Ich habe gerade mal „Oberer Totpunkt“ Bilder gegooglet. Mittlerweile findest du mehr OT-Fotos als technische Motorenmotive!
sP: Ihr seid musikalisch recht schwer einzuordnen, überschreitet gern Genregrenzen. Gibt es dennoch musikalische „Tabus“ – oder könnten theoretisch auch Elemente aus Schlager, Jazz o.ä. Einzug in eure Musik halten?

Michael: Meine musikalischen Wurzeln stammen aus der New-Wave-Ära, deshalb bin ich offen für unterschiedliche Stile. Ich bin kein Freund von Alben, bei denen alle Songs gleich klingen. Bei OT ist die Basis natürlich elektronisch – Minimal Electro. Aber völlig offen bin ich sicherlich nicht: Schlager ist für mich ein absolutes No-Go! Oder meinst du Gruftschlager wie Unheilig? „Wir sind geboren, um zu sterben“, wäre wahrscheinlich Bettinas Interpretation. (lacht)



sP: Im Song „Hamburg“ nennt ihr eure Wahlheimatstadt euren „Großstadtalptraum“. Wie sähe denn die Stadt aus, die euch ruhig schlafen ließe?


Bettina: Die kann es nicht geben. Das ist logisch ausgeschlossen. Jedenfalls so lange es Menschen gibt, und Macht und Machtgefälle und Ungerechtigkeiten und Selbstgerechtigkeit und Gleichgültigkeit und Gier und Kleingeist und Geltungssucht und Unaufrichtigkeit und Engstirnigkeit und und ...

Michael: Hamburg ist eine attraktive Stadt – und seit 1995 unsere Wahlheimat. Aber hier leben fast zwei Millionen Menschen. Hamburg wird häufig als schönste Stadt Deutschlands bezeichnet, was auch unstrittig ist, hat aber auch viele dunkle Facetten - gerade für die, die nicht auf der Gewinnerseite stehen. Und die zeigen wir als eine Art „Feature“, eine einseitige Darstellung. Musikalisch ist Hamburg ein Hort unzähliger Hamburger-Schule- und Indie-Bands, die alle irgendwie gleich klingen. Man findet auch immer wieder interessante, überraschende Bands – aber da muss man wirklich suchen.

The 3rd full length for this really special band from Hamburg confirms the potential that they have already revealed on their previous CD‘s. Led by the charismatic and sexy Bettina Bormann playing again as the narrator, ::OT:: also stands for an incisive electronic sound composed by Michael Krüger. The mix of devastating electronics with a strong EBM flavour on top and the pure narrative stories of Bettina Bormann is probably the only project in the genre to use this approach. This kind of experiment is a real challenge, but the least I can say is that each album brings a serious evolution resulting here in a brilliant opus. And the experiment goes much further as this band is using a real contrabass player. I can imagine that, when you don‘t know this band yet, it will sound totally surreal to speak about EBM with contrabass and spoken (narrative) vocals instead of a real singer. You have to taste this experience to realize it‘s still possible to create real innovative electronic music. Bettina is telling us her little stories while some powerful male vocals take care of some backings, but it finally sounds like a play between female and male vocals. It brings a kind of theatrical approach, which again is hard to imagine but once again I have to say it works very well! The music is simply brilliant. The more into body-pop minded „Teufels Lehrerin“ and „Gefangen Im Vergangenen“ are both the best components to show the strong potential of ::OT:: The music is well-crafted and here we also can find a very original approach in the writing. If I were to give away an award for most original electronic band it would be without a shadow of a doubt ::OT:: and I can easily imagine this band on stage bringing a very personal and visual performance. Next to this enlightening release Bettina Bormann has also released her first novel on Danse Macabre.

Leider gibt es nur wenige so authentische Bands wie Oberer Totpunkt, die sich so herrlich von der Masse hervorheben und mit jedem weiteren Album Ihrem Stil treu bleiben, aber nie langweilig werden. Die tiefgründigen, provokanten Texte von Bettina Bormann treffen auf minimal-elektronischen Beats, die passgenau von Michael Krüger darauf zugeschnitten worden sind. Manchmal mitreißend, dann wieder dünster-melancholisch, aber immer absolut einzigartig und fesselnd. Das ist nicht einfach nur Musik. Das ist als ein Kunstwerk in sich selbst gedacht. Sicherlich ist das nicht jedermanns Sache. Wer nicht gleich von den ersten Tönen abgeschreckt ist, sollte es sich auf dem Sofa gemütlich machen und sich ausreichend Zeit nehmen, um die erstklassigen Texte auf sich wirken zu lassen. Und dann wird man OT immer sofort aus der Masse wiedererkennen. Ich jedenfalls werde mir jetzt die älteren Alben noch einmal bewusst anhören. - Avalon

The German trio entered the dark music scene in 2007 with their debut album ‘10 Grad vor OT’ and surprised both critics and music addicts with their unconventional musical approach. With ‘Erde Ruft’, the project has released their second album in 2009 on Danse Macabre. It won't take long until their fans were getting new stuff as the new record 'Stiller Zoo' has been released on 21st May. Music & Performance
Before the band started, it was announced that OBSCENITY TRIAL, planned to play next on the small stage, had to cancel due to illness. This was causing the first break of the day starting the relax program. But first, it was time for quite an extraordinary project of Bettina Bormann, OBERER TOTPUNKT. I’ve seen this band already last year at the WGT and was quite impressed by the unusual spoken word performance. At WGT, there were a few more people on stage presenting a real small choir, but also in this constellation with the extraordinary theatrical stage performance, this show was eye catching. Bettina’s spoken words performance surely impressed the audience, even some might have looked quite irritated during the new interpretation of i.e. ‘Die Vogelhochzeit’ or the FEHLFARBEN cover ‘Paul ist tot’. Great show, just too much sun, but that was not the band’s fault I guess ;)

„Great and innovating work with multiple cool songs“ Bettina Bormann (vocals) and Michael Krüger (music) move on with their unique and experimental EBM approach. Oberer Totpunkt definitely remains one of the most atypical EBM formations on the scene. Bettina’s narrative German vocals are not exactly that typical while music wise “Desiderat” mixes pure EBM ingredients with a few other ideas. It all brings the compositions into a very minimal daylight, which are miles away from the established and praised standards. That’s precisely what I like in their sound. It’s a creative and innovative approach remaining a real challenge. - Sideline Magazine

About: The sound collages and short-story-like picturesque and conceptual worlds of Oberer Totpunkt are inclusive of various genres: wave, EBM, but also hip-hop and Gregorian chant. Oberer Totpunkt are often regarded as a representative of the Neue Deutsche Todeskunst. Two realities, the inner and outer understanding of the world clash throughout the musical itinerary of Oberer Totpunkt. Their often emotion-ridden content plunges the listener in depths of fear, but also of resignation, of vigilance, but also of confusion.

Performance: A very enthusiastic show began as the mainstage’s first act of the day, Oberer Totpunkt began their mesmerizing, multi-instrument production. Inflamed by lead singer Bettina Bormann‘s powerful voice, who stood immobile midstage, the show was all about taking pleasure in music: in thinking it up, playing it, and delivering it onstage. A disoriented, whitewash faced creature of the underworld, with a doll tied to her ballerina skirt emerged on stage and seemed to be held captive by the band’s music. Later on, Bettina the circus tamer shared the stage with the circus MC and the circus’ ballerina, whose mechanical movements were giving a special tempo to the already cadenced show. back to top - Dark Wave Magazine
