“Black Sabbath rules” sembrano dirci gli Oblivious sin dall’inizio del loro debutto “Goons and Masters“. Ecco che un’altra promettente band, proveniente dalla sempre più fertile Svezia, firma la sua presenza nel mondo dello stoner metal.

Sulla loro storia c’è poco da dire poiché questo è il loro primo album, e nonostante non si siano formati proprio l’altro ieri, non abbiamo molte notizie sul loro passato; sappiamo che (come loro stessi scrivono nella loro pagina MySpace) i loro punti di riferimento principali sono Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin e Pentagram. Riguardo al contenuto del dischetto, direi che al giorno d’oggi suonando un genere così è molto facile assomigliarsi l’un l’altro ma gli Oblivious sembrano non essere preoccupati da questo dato di fatto. Il ritornello di Ego Boy sta a dimostrare proprio questo: la band è molto ispirata e non è clone di nessuno! Proseguendo l’ascolto ci imbattiamo nella stupenda Throne, e notiamo che la band non scherza per niente in quanto l’intensità è alle stelle e tutto fila liscio come l’olio (m’immagino la loro soddisfazione quando hanno ascoltato l’album ultimato) Il singer Isak Suckmoore ci offre una prova magistrale, all’inizio di Kickin’ and Screaming ricorda addirittura il grande Lemmy dei Motorhead. Sino alla chiusura dell’album si alterneranno altri riff memorabili e soprattutto assoli di chitarra che non possono passare inosservati! L’ennesima perla dell’album è rappresentata invece dalle parti di tastiera, pacate ed evocative, che fanno da tappeto al mai deludente Isak, uno dei cantanti più bravi che ho ascoltato in vita mia, e posso dirlo con fermezza. Ascoltando lui e i suoi degni compagni si ha come la sensazione che un vecchio amico ci si presenti per ricordare la vita passata, e assaporarla in ogni minuscolo dettaglio.

“Goons and Masters” è un debutto con i fiocchi.

This is a highly competent retro bluesy stoner rock attack, the production is very good and captures the guitar tones perfectly. Ideas on offer here from the 70s rock gigants such as Led Zeppelin, Bloodrock, Iron Butterfly, Free… to the southern flavors of a Lynyrd Skynyrd, Clutch, Gov’t Mule… this kind of vintage rock has been done so many times that you can’t expect much in terms of originality. But this Swedish quintet comes up with decent riffs, the drummer gets some very good groove going and if Zakk Wylde gets in trouble with his vocals, Isak is a very good replacement and that’s a complement. Oblivous often is the bastard son of Black Label Society. With some chunky layered guitar solos in opener “Egoboy” and "Red eyed goon", it is a promising start to the album... "Masters of time" and "Dead end night" have more southern soul as it drag down and rock in a slower fashion. "Throne” has a riff that brought my thoughts back to the "Easy livin”-period of Uriah Heep “Kicking and screaming” and “Boiling brain” become a return to good ol’ fashioned up-tempo r n’ r with sweaty, boozy hooks, butt-shaking rhythms.

Perfect band synergy and various songwriting add up to Oblivious being a winner. File them next to Kamchatka, Half Man, Backdraft, Blowback,…

2009’s Goons and Masters is the debut offering from Swedish band Oblivious. When a band cites Clutch and Dozer as primary influences, you pretty much know you’re in for a grooving stoner rock album, and that’s exactly what Oblivious delivers.
Aside from the expected groove and Sabbath/Pentagram worship guitar riffage, there is also a ‘70s rock vibe on Goon and Masters. Think Foghat or Grand Funk Railroad, only, you know, doomier. There’s also that uniquely Swedish sense of melody which makes Oblivious sound like the Scandinavian equivalent of Fireball Ministry. It’s heavy, but up-tempo.
Isak’s gravelly vocals only add to the heaviness. It all adds up to a totally rocking album that has all of the expected heaviness but remains accessible to the average rock fan. Leadoff track “Egoboy” is one of the album’s highlights, rocking with plenty of swagger. “Bring It On Me” is another winner, mainly because it sounds like something inadvertently left off Sabbath’s Master of Reality album. The whole album rocks with a similar energy. You end up enjoying it because it sounds so familiar.
Goons and Masters is a completely solid, completely enjoyable stoner rock album. It’s also completely forgettable. As much as you may be nodding your head while this album is playing, as soon as it ends you’ll be hard-pressed to remember what you just heard. The bottom line is that while Oblivious will undoubtedly appeal to serious stoner rock fans, you’re probably better off spinning one of your old Clutch albums or the latest from The Company Band. - Hardrock Haven

Fährt man mit dem Auto von Kopenhagen nach Stockholm, dann kommt man irgendwann an Linköping vorbei. Aus diesem netten Städtchen direkt am Roxen-See kommen OBLIVIOUS. Gegründet Ende 2003, steht nun nach vier Demos das Debütalbum "Goons And Masters" an.

Den "typisch schwedisch"-Stempel hat man schnell zur Hand, diese Mischung aus Classic- und Stoner-Rock findet man dort ja an jeder Straßenecke. Und auch typisch schwedisch hat man trotzdem seine eigene kleine Ecke gefunden. So startet man cool groovend mit dem "Ego Boy", packt aber bei "Throne" eine gewaltige Portion URIAH HEEP dazu, Keyboards und Riffs erinnern stark an deren "Easy Living", eingepackt in ein Stoner-Gewand. Es wird durchgehend griffig gegroovt, mal eine Portion Southern-Vibes verbaut, man drückt treibend auf die Tube wie bei "Kickin´ And Screamin´" und "Boiling Brain". Es gibt eine wunderschöne, bluesige Herzschmerzballade, getragen von traurigen Orgelklängen. Die Vocals sind passend, dabei nicht wirklich einzigartig, erinnern mich immer wieder an eine Mischung aus ZAKK WYLDE und heiserem Rickey Medlocke (BLACKFOOT). Es gibt coole Backing-Vocals, eine Popo tretende Rhythmsection. Interessant ist auch die Gitarrenarbeit, während eine Gitarre sehr verspielt und teils mit 70er Prog-Einflüssen auffällt, hält die andere mit erdigem, gradlinigem Spiel die Songs rockig in der Spur. So gelingt eine coole Balance aus 70er Sound und Stoner-Rock. Freunde von Bands wie DOZER, 7ZUMA7, FIVE HORSE JOHNSON und auch CLUTCH werden hier ebenso angesprochen wie Liebhaber alter BLACK SABBATH-Riffs, von FOGHAT/BUDGIE-Boogie und dezenten LED ZEPPELIN-Melodien. Hier und da verliert man sich etwas in den Songs durch längere Instrumentalpassagen mit 70er Jamcharakter, nicht jeder Song ist ein absolutes Meisterwerk. Als Gesamtwerk aber kann "Goons And Masters" als Debüt voll überzeugen. Wie üblich schöpft man aus einem Pool von neuen und alten Songs, wenn man zukünftig die Stärken besser bündelt, dann ist da viel mehr drin.

Wer sich im schwedischen Pool der Stoner- und Classic-Rocker wohl fühlt, der kann sich "Goons And Masters" in die Sammlung stellen oder sollte OBLIVIOUS zumindest mal antesten. Oblivious "Ego Boy" was broadcast on swedish radio - Radio P3!!

Di band moderne che hanno un sound settantiano ne ho sentite parecchie, ma poche mi sono sembrate così credibili come questi Oblivious, certo alcuni suoni non sono paragonabili con quelli delle incisioni d’epoca e la produzione risulta spesso diversa, ma lo spirito, il modo di suonare, la capacità compositiva di questa band svedese (manco a farlo apposta) ha dell’incredibile. La storia del gruppo è simile a quella di tutti i gruppi, per cui non mi voglio soffermare sulle note biografiche, piuttosto largo spazio alla musica.

Il disco parte con dei suoni evocativi di batteria che lanciano “Ego Boy”, in pieno Sabbath style, la voce del singer ricorda quella sporca di Lemmy, poi c’è su tutto un’attitudine zeppeliniana che completa l’opera e sono scintille. “Throne” è un blues psichedelico a tinte epiche dai connotati molto personali. Complessa e potente “Red Eyed Goon”, ancora heavy blues di grande impatto. Tutta da godere “Master of Time”, fra parti rallentate e altre più incalzanti è un vero caleidoscopio di sonorità vintage di grande presa. La macchina degli Oblivious non conosce pause e brano dopo brano tesse le sue trame sempre mantenendo una coerenza e una determinazione granitiche, ma talvolta riescono anche a proporre dei piccoli gioiellini come “Bring it on Me”. Altro bel groove di batteria domina in “Boiling Brain”, un brano apocalittico che sembra una corsa e trasmette con efficacia un senso di ansia. “Bide Your Time” al contrario è ossianica e lenta, ma ha la stessa forza eloquente del brano anteriore. Apoteosi finale con “Blind Faith”, che riassume in se tutte le qualità della band, puro hard rock.

Gran bel disco questo degli Oblivious, di quelli che si ascoltano tutti d’un fiato. Lo stoner non ha mai sfondato, ma ci ha regalato delle belle emozioni e fintanto che ci saranno gruppi come questo saremo sempre ben contenti di farveli conoscere. GB - Rock Impression

Dags att backa bandet och se norröver. OBLIVIOUS låter BLACK SABBATH, Rock´n´Roll , 70-tal, LED ZEPPELIN och KYUSS. Allt på en gång från detta Linköpingsband. 2003/04 började Isak (sång) och Sven (gitarr) lira med David (gitarr) och Per (bas). Jocke tillkom på trummor. Teknik, progg och Rock´n´Roll möttes därefter. Omslaget är nästan Dogma men stilen känns ok.

Inledande ”Ego Boy” låter stoner light, introt på ”Throne” närmast UFO, innan Isaks röst återför dem till 70-talets andra giganter. De skapar gung och förflyttar lyssnaren bakåt i tiden med titlar som ”Red Eyed Goon”, ”Master of Time” och ”Boiling Brain”. Gitarrerna är stilsäkra och Isaks röst gillar jag. Det psykedeliska introt till ”Master of Time” sätter nog fart på många 70-talsrockers. Infon talar om att Daniels gitarrspel är mer rockigt än Svens tekniskt progressiva, så att låten pendlar däremellan är lätt att förklara. Mer grooves än i ”Kickin´ and Screamin´” är svårt att hitta utanför 70-talet. Jag är ingen massiv fan av denna genre men visst är det drag i band som ABRAMIS BRAHMA och ZEBULON (R.I.P). OBLIVIOUS håller nästan samma klass tio låtar rakt igenom. Men något svårfångat energiskt saknas för en riktig topplacering. Å andra sidan är detta debutplattan, och bandet har tiden för sig.

Voici une nouvelle bande d’ursidés qui nous vient de Suède et balance sa contribution au lourd dossier du stoner. Oblivious se forme en 2004 quelque part à Linköping, une ville quelque part en Suède, un pays quelque part dans le nord. En matière de stoner, la Suède fait partie des gros fournisseurs, avec une tradition remontant aux années 90, des précurseurs comme Spiritual Beggars et des petits maîtres de forges comme Dozer, Abramis Brama, Dexter Jones’ Circus Orchestra, Demon Cleaner, Generous Maria, Grand Magus, Mustasch, Sparzanza, The Awesome Machine, Witchcraft ou Zebulon.

Avec un tel biotope dans un pays qui doit comprendre un groupe stoner tous les dix habitants, on se demande encore comment de jeunes groupes ont une chance de se faire entendre. Avec Oblivious, néanmoins, le pari est encore gagné et le miracle stoner se renouvelle encore une fois avec cette troupe d’hirsutes inspirés par leurs compatriotes Dozer, les Américains de Clutch ou les grands demi-dieux des années 70, comme Black Sabbath ou Led Zeppelin.

Après quelques années sur les routes et quatre démos, Daniel (guitare), Per (basse), Isak (chant), Sven (guitare) et Jocke (batterie) sortent sur le label Transubstans (la filiale maison de disques du site de vente suédois Record Heaven) un disque convaincant, dans une veine stoner traditionnel, avec piles de guitares tricotant du décibel plombé et section rythmique colossale. Le groupe développe de belles compositions sur des titres longs comme "Red eye goon", "Masters of time", "Dead and night" et fauche à ras de terre avec les courts et nerveux "Bide your time" ou "Boiling brain". Entre-deux, des titres bluesy et stratosphériques ("Kickin’ and screamin’", "Blind faith") viennent compléter la palette de styles et d’inspiration.

Ce disque, qui ne se distingue pas forcément de la masse de ses contemporains, est fait avec honnêteté musicale et sincérité métallurgique, il n’y a donc aucune raison de le négliger.

Var har jag hört det här förut? Det är frågan jag ställer mig själv efter att ha plöjt igenom Linköpingsbaserade Oblivious debutalbum ”Goons and Masters”. Svaret på den frågan är jag trots allt ganska säker på. Jag har aldrig hört det tidigare, men det känns bekant på grund av att Oblivious förmodade inspirationskällor ger sig tillkänna ganska frekvent genom hela plattan.

Stundtals hörs ekon från 70-talsikoner som Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath och Deep Purple, men framförallt är det stoner á la Dozer, Clutch och Kyuss som framträder i den grymma riffkavalkad som Linköpingsbandet levererar.

Nog skrivet om eventuella influenser. ”Goons and Masters” är en mycket skickligt sammansatt debutplatta. Det känns verkligen som en enhetlig låtsamling, som helst ska avnjutas i sin helhet. Trots detta påstående tycker jag mig kunna identifiera skivans höjdpunkter i spår som de två tungvikarna Red Eyed Goon och Bring It on Home, i sammanhanget ganska lugna Dead and Night och avslutande Blind Faith.

Oblivious känns i slutändan ändå som en ny, frisk fläkt i musikvärlden och bra band kan man ju faktiskt aldrig få för mycket av. Jag har ibland perioder då jag nästan enbart lyssnar på spellistor bestående av band som Dozer och Clutch. Och vem vet, snart kanske den spellistan kommer att domineras av Oblivious? Fortsätter de utveckla sitt eget sound så är det ingen tvekan om att det kan bli så. De är en bra bit på vägen redan nu, men givetvis finns det en del som kan utvecklas. Inget band är perfekt.

Det finns gott om bra rockband idag som är på uppgång, men jag ser absolut inget hinder för att Oblivious skulle kunna bli ett av de band som vi ser mer och mer av framöver.

Zunächst stellte ich mir die Frage, ob OBLIVIOUS ihrer Zeit nicht etwas hinterher hinken, denn der Stoner Rock hat seine Blütezeit doch etwas überschritten. Die Wurzeln der schwedischen Band reichen in das Jahr 2004 zurück, als sich die bekennenden Black Sabbath und Pentagramm Fans entschlossen, ihren Idolen nachzueifern und sich dabei noch Orientierungshilfe bei neuzeitlichen Größen wie Kyuss holten. Herausgekommen ist ein durchaus beachtliches Debüt, das auf den Namen "Goons And Masters" hört und über zehn Songs verfügt, die zum einen gut arrangiert sind, aber auch abwechslungsreiche Kompositionen darstellen. Los geht es mit dem coolen "Ego Boy", einem echten Kopfwackler und Fußstampfer, der im Anschluss vom mächtig straighten "Throne" abgelöst wird. Dampfende Gitarren, ausdrucksstarke Stimme, alles an Bord, was man für eine Karriere braucht. Meine weiteren Favoriten auf diesem kurzweiligen Album wären der groovige Rocker "Master Of Time" und das unheimliche "Dead End Night". Freunde der 70er sollten hier auf alle Fälle ein Ohr riskieren.
In Schweden selbst hat dieses Album bereits Meriten geerntet und so stellt "Goons And Masters" für mich auch im Endeffekt ein zeitlos gutes Rockalbum dar. - My Revelations

Tung stoner från Linköping
Rockskivor släpps ut titt som tätt runt om i Sverige. Men att se melodisk stonerrock på hyllan i skivbutiken är dock inte lika vanligt. Linköpingsbandet Oblivious, som spelar musik i just den genren, vill gärna ändra på detta.

Den 29 december så släppte de sin första skiva - Goons and Masters. Med en lång rad konserter framför sig så kan man lätt säga att Oblivious är på framfarten i rockvärlden.
Linköpingsbandet Oblivious är ett gäng killar med en och samma ambition - de vill skapa och spela musik. De spelar runt om i hela Sverige och till sommaren hoppas de på en spelning i Tyskland. Bandets nuvarande uppsättning av medlemmar har funnits sedan hösten 2004, men man startade bandet redan sommaren 2002.
- Vi har funnits ganska länge, i olika former, säger Isac som är bandets sångare.
Skivsläpp
Att bandet kommer fortsätta existera åtminstone ett tag framöver råder det inga tvivel om. De släppte nämligen sin debutskiva - Goons and Masters- vid årsskiftet. Då de också hade en releasfest som blev en högst oväntad tillställning. Det kom inte mindre än 130 personer till Skylten den 5 januari i år, för att hylla den nya skivan.
Sin inspiration har de hämtat från olika håll. Det går bland annat hitta influenser från Black Sabbath och Led Zeppelin. Men också i från lite nyare band som Dozer, Kyuss and Clutch.
Varierande spelningar
Den 5 mars besökte Oblivious Anders Ljungstedts Gymnasium för att spela några av sina låtar. Dagen efter (den 6 mars) var det dags för en lite större spelning - Linköping Metal Massacre. Killarna tyckte självklart att det var roligt att få vara med på Linköpings egna metalfestival. Men att få spela på Ljunkan var inte helt fel det heller.
- Man rättar munnen efter matsäcken, säger Isac med ett leende på läpparna.
Det faller sig också så att inte mindre än fyra av de fem som är medlemmar i Oblivious, har gått på Anders Ljungstedts Gymnasium för några år sedan.
Hopp om framtiden
Killarna i stonerbandet Oblivious hoppas på många framtida spelningar. Men framförallt vill de ha roligt. Med en nyutsläppt skiva i bagaget siktar de sakta men säkert mot framgång. Trots att de fick kämpa för att nå målet att kunna släppa sin skiva, hoppas de att de kommer att få släppa ännu fler i framtiden.
- Det är som att tatuera sig. Det gör ont, men efteråt vill man göra en till.

If you love Stoner Rock with a little bit of psychedelic hard tunes wherever are necessary (just for the fuzz) and you have in your quiver arrows diving into the magic mix of DOZER and CLUTCH, plus the blessings of your home country Sweden above your head, then, all the omens are by your side and no black cat will pass across your way. Well, about OBLIVIOUS the question, and their debut “Goons And Masters” that seems to have the potential and the guts to make the grand opening in the multitudinous scene of nowadays' Stoner, a movement especially developed in Sweden. But the pretty noticeable thing about OBLIVIOUS is the equable combination they succeed, including vintage touches of SABBATH and BIGELF with FOGHAT’s all-time classic rock ‘n’ roll at the same time. Interesting, huh? Let’s see if goons are more powerful than masters now.

Through 50 minutes of the album, OBLIVIOUS achieve to run time like water and slip inside your ears unexampled. The pompous “Ego Boy” takes the rods and makes the appropriate introduction with the five members of the band in absolute successful way. “Throne” has something between the antiquity of “Easy Livin’” and the aggressiveness of “Electric Worry”, while “Red Eyed Goon” puts the mark of OBLIVIOUS and spreads promises about their instant future- if you listen closely to this song though, you’ll maybe hear even Layne Staley’s readings (RIP). The following “Master Of Time” has a softer, lazy, low-tempo making the mind to lose itself through these colorful clouds of dirty and nasty tunes spreading inside the room. Check your speakers; you will definitely see them come out! “Bring It On Me” does that ‘wuh-wuh’ thing (wuh tuh fuh?!) and travel us back to 70s, when “Blind Faith” shows its Chris Cornell-ian teeth leaving the past 50 minutes behind and wondering how soon this record ended.

There is always a ‘but’ in these cases; we must have demands and be serious when it’s about a debutante band, because the sequence is as difficult as the start and in many occasions we notice bad followings after a good start. “Goons And Masters” is a very good debut album but the curiosity about the next step does not leave me to enjoy it as much as I want to. The good thing is that I have patience and I can wait the next OBLIVIOUS album. Till then, “Ego Boy” will be my appropriate companion, especially this oncoming summer.

Dalle lande desolate (o ghiacciate) della Svezia, ecco spuntare fuori il primo vero e proprio album, dopo la bellezza di quattro demo pubblicati dal 2004 ad oggi, degli Oblivious, band stoner con influenze settantianamente psichedeliche, a titolo “Goons And Masters”. Ce ne era bisogno? La recensione potrebbe benissimo fermarsi qui, ma dopo un attenta analisi del prodotto, si possono tirare fondamentalmente due conclusioni: 1- Che sicuramente il mondo, già infognato di suo, della moderna discografia non aveva bisogno di un’altra band che prende spunto sfacciatamente dai Kyuss, e 2- Che, però, abbandonando per un attimo i pregiudizi, il prodotto qui presente non è da buttare in toto. Certo, di prettamente innovativo c’è ben poco; d’altronde il gruppo prende spunto da due generi parecchio remoti nel tempo e già ampiamente sviscerati. Però qualche buono spunto c’è: la cavalcante “Kickin’ And Screamin’ “, la quasi epica “Master Of Time” e la quasi sognante e vorticosa “Dead End Night”, così come “Red Eye Goon” e “Throne”, forti di un riffing potente e presente al punto giusto. Basta questa manciata di canzoni a far raggiungere la sufficienza ad un disco che, altrimenti, sarebbe risultato troppo prevedibile e scopiazzato per occupare un qualsivoglia posto nel panorama stoner odierno. - Metallus

Mit OBLIVIOUS wurde uns eine weitere Stoner-Rock Kapelle aus Schweden angeströmt. Wer jetzt achtlos dran vorbeihört ist selbst schuld, denn hin und wieder befinden sich wahre Schätze unter dem Strandgut auch wenn ihre Verpackung dies zunächst nicht vermuten lässt. Die 5 Schweden kommen mit einer ganzen Schiffsladung voll Heaviness und Groove daher und haben allesamt unter Captain Garcia auf der KYUSS gedient. Somit haben OBLIVIOUS die selben Vorraussetzung wie die restlichen Tausend Schiffe der Stonerflotte. Was sie vor dem Untergang bewahrt ist, dass sie auf ihren 10 musikalischen Reisen nicht nur die üblichen, bekannten und übersättigten Häfen wie CLUTCH Bay oder Port DOZER anlaufen sondern gelegentlich auch Expeditionen in die Alte Welt unternehmen. Die BLACK SABBATH Inselgruppen werden des häufigeren angesteuert aber auch LED ZEPPELIN Harbour und das Jim Morrison Mahnmal liegen auf der Route des jungen Quintetts. Alles in allem ist "Goons and masters" zwar ein reinRASSIGES Stoneralbum welches ordentlich nach Vorne geht, viel Drive hat und ordentlich Staub spuckt. Doch bereits im zweiten Song "Throne" werden die im Opener bereits angedeuteten Experimente unüberhörbar und die Band schreckt auch nicht vor dem Einsatz einer flirrenden Orgel zurück....warum auch nicht wenn der Hauptriff ohnehin schon ein wenig nach URIAH HEEP klingt, und spätestens jetzt haben wir es nicht mehr mit einem stereotypen Release einer überquellenden Sparte zu tun. Die Band hält viele gute kleine wie große Ideen für den Hörer parat und hält ihr Schaffen spannend. Sänger Isak will da nicht hinten anstehen und zeigt des öfteren das er auch singen und nicht nur röhren kann, das erste mal wird dies im grandiosen "Master of time" angedeutet aber beim balladesken "Dead end night" lässt er keine Zweifel mehr zurück. Mit vollkommen klarer Stimme singt er sich bis in schwindelerregende Höhen hinauf um Odysseus guten Tag zu sagen. Auch das abschließende überwiegend akustisch gehaltene "Blind faith" fällt aus dem Stonerrahmen und lässt sogar Herzen eingefleischter Blues Rocker und Anhänger von LED ZEPPELIN höher schlagen. Bei all der Begeisterung über die ruhigeren Nummern des Albums muss noch erwähnt werden, dass die heftigen und treibenden Ideen natürlich nicht über Bord geworfen wurden und da die Schweden im Beiboot noch so einiges an Heavy Metal aus den späten 70iger Jahren mitführen braucht es auch dem passionierten Banger nicht bange werden. Wer auf der OBLIVION eincheckt kommt voll und ganz auf seine Kosten!

Transubstans sind schon seit jeher Garanten für die ungetrübte Lehre des 70er Jahre Rock. Ob Doom, Psychedelic, Progressive oder Spacerock - sie haben alles zu bieten und zwar so authentisch, wie das sogar zwischen 1969 und 1973 nicht viele Bands hinbekommen haben.

Und da machen auch Oblivious keine Ausnahme. Die Band beackert auf ihrer ersten Scheibe geschickt ein Terrain, das damals irgendwo zwischen Black Sabbath und Freedom angesiedelt gewesen wäre, eventuell noch mit leichten Ginhouse Referenzen, falls sich von Euch noch jemand an diese Formationen erinnert. Schleppende Rhythmen und beschwingte Nummern mit einer guten Portion Boogie im Hintern ('Throne') wechseln sich in munterer Folge ab. Dazu zeittypische Sounds wie der gepflegte Einsatz eines Wahwah Pedals machen diese Platte zum Pflichtkauf für Genrefans. An allen Ecken und Enden warten Aha-Erlebnisse für Feinschmecker der genannten Musikrichtungen. Dabei bleibt die Band trotz aller Referenzen dank ihres leicht kehligen Gesangs stets erkennbar.

Von denen möchte ich in Zukunft gerne noch mehr hören! Ganz viel sogar!

The label's latest combatants go under the collected name of Oblivious and their debut album is entitled "Goons And Masters".

If you played opener "Ego Boy" not telling me the release year and nationality of the band, I don't think the answer would have been 2010 and Sweden, but more likely late seventies and USA. Ok, they don't sound too way off from some of the other current stoner bands, but they do have some really nice personal qualities that I dig. Especially the cool harmony vocals and the great variations of "Red Eye Goon", at times with a touch of Bigelf.

This bands really stand their ground in comparison with Swedish colleagues like Dozer, Witchcraft, Graveyard etc. Oblivious are a bit heavier and more riff-driven. I also really dig Iska's vocals, which is not your average stoner singer, even though he has a pretty low down and gritty touch to his voice. One track that sounds a bit more like your run of the mill up-tempo stoner is "Kickin' And Screamin", but it fits well into the rest of the material.

"Bring It On Me" reminds me a bit of early Grand Magus, which is great in my book. The variety of the album also shows in tracks like the long and at times folk-influenced "Dead End Night" which spans over a wide variety of styles and sounds. A killer track, indeed!! This track also showcases the bands ability to really crush! I really love the mix of this album!

There are hints of vintage Sabbath, touches of Bigelf, a bit of Grand Magus, but the mix becomes quite their own. It's brutal but still ambient and quite analogue. Just take the guitar sound on "Blind Faith" which would scrape the skin off your face if you stood too close to the speaker. One of my favourite Transubstans releases, I must say! - Metal Covenant

Oblivious – Goons And Masters (Transubstans Records)
Oblivious are described on their publicity material as “a bunch of stoners from Linkoping” who play “melodic stoner rock with a touch of classic rock 'n’ roll based in the 70s”.
Yep, it’s a fair call and as they kick off their debut album Goons And Masters with “Ego Boy”. You can hear the influences of Sabbath, Motorhead, Pentagram, and maybe Clutch coming to the fore, all being shamelessly mashed into a full-on riff-fest.
Both “Red Eyed Goon” and “Kickin’ And Screamin’” kick off with pulsing bass before the dual guitars come slamming in. In amongst all this comes “Master Of Time” which takes a totally unexpected turn towards the atmospheric with a highly promising track that opens out dramatically.
“Bring It On Me”, and “Boiling Brain” both rock out mercilessly. There is more to this band though and the doom laden darkness of “Dead End Night”, the psychedelic “Bide Your Time”, and potential highlight “Blind Faith” all add an extra depth to the band and the album. Good to see the criminally underrated Five Horse Johnson getting a nod among their influences.

Im Informationsblatt werden im Zusammenhang mit der schwedischen Band Oblivious die üblichen Verdächtigen genannt: »For fans of Clutch, Kyuss, Dozer or Five Horse Johnson.«
Ende 2003, Anfang 2004 ging es mit der Band los und seitdem hat man vier Demos auf den Markt gebracht.
Vorliegende Platte wurde sowohl in Göteborg (Bass und Drums) als auch in ihrem Heimatort Linkoping aufgenommen. "Goons And Masters" heißt das Werk und bei dem Titel wollen wir doch gleich das akustische Trennverfahren in Gang setzten. Wo sind die 'Dummen' und die 'Meister'?
Neben den weiteren im Informationsblatt genannten Bands hat man definitiv eine Gruppe vergessen.
Auf die bringt einen Oblivious von ganz alleine. Dazu muss man vom Beginn der CD an nur knappe fünf Minuten warten. Die Sache mit dem "Ego Boy" lässt den Hörer zumindest die Ohren spitzen. Rund gespielter Stoner Rock mit allen notwendigen Zutaten und ein bisschen mehr. Offensichtlich geht es Oblivious auch um ohrenfreundliche Melodien, die häufig durch hörenswerte Backing Vocals verstärkt werden. Klar, die Schweden haben ihr Hausaufgaben gemacht und verschicken Song für Song gut gefüllte Riffpäckchen.
Nun aber zur vergessenen Gruppe, die einem beim zweiten Titel am geistigen Auge vorbei rauscht. Bei den ersten Riffs aus der zweiten Nummer nimmt Oblivous das Leben zu sehr auf die leichte Schulter. Uriah Heep nannte es damals "Easy Livin'" und vorher waren auch beim Opener keine Keyboardsignale auszumachen. Die sind aber plötzlich auf dem "Throne" zu hören. Nun will ich diese Komposition in keiner Weise (bildhaft) strafend an die Wand nageln, denn der Rest ist von den 'Ahnungslosen' schon gut gemacht worden.
Bei zwei Leuten an den Gitarren kann man sich natürlich entsprechend austoben.
Böris und Sven spielen auch nach Belieben mit den Effekten, denn es bleibt zum Beispiel ausreichend Raum, um neben dem Riffing ebenso gute Klänge mit dem Wah Wah-Pedal einfließen zu lassen.
Die Schweden haben für den Hörer eine ziemlich breite Palette an Ideen parat.
So entschwindet man schon einmal in psychedelisch sphärige Höhen oder liefert Stoner Rock ohne Sicherheitsgurt, wenn Riffwogen die Freundschaft mit dem Metal nicht nur suchen, sondern auch finden.
Hey! Plötzlich ist sie aus der Versenkung wieder aufgetaucht. Gemeint ist die Orgel.
Pastoral predigt sie "Dead End Night". Die Gitarren schwenken in diesem Slowsong eher die mit Weihrauch gefüllte Räucherampel. Nein, diese mit auflodernden Parts versehene Ballade stellt nicht nur einen klasse Song ins Rampenlicht, sondern zeigt den Sänger von einer anderen Seite. Im chilligen Ambiente ist Isaks Stimme sehr sanft und er kann erstaunliche Höhen erreichen.
"Boiling Brain" treibt den letzten Dreck von der Tischplatte und groovt richtig gut.
Da legt das Quintett einen richtigen Hinhörer auf das Parkett und mit "Bide Your Time" fährt man nochmals großes Besteck auf. Dank Per am Bass gibt es schwerbeladene Rhythmik. Geschickt locker Oblivious den Track durch Intermezzi auf. Zunächst ist es ein spaciger Teil mit viel verzerrter Gitarre und dann wird kurz Isaks Gesang verfremdet.
Am Schluss kommt noch ein Schmankerl.
Die akustische Gitarre ist ziemlich lange im Einsatz. Dazu singt Isak und dann rocken die Männer den Blues so etwas von gekonnt, dass der Hörer direkt wieder Lust auf den ersten Track bekommt. "Blind Faith" macht eine überaus gute Figur auf dem Laufsteg des Stoner Rock und die hier nicht erwähnten Songs finden ebenfalls Gefallen.
Oblivious macht tolle Musik. Die Paarung aus rotzigem Rock und guten Melodien haut hin und rundum ist "Goons And Masters" eine interessante Platte in diesem Genre geworden. - Rocktimes

Ni som är tillräckligt gamla kanske minns hur det luktade på SJ-tågen för tjugo år sedan? En aningen fadd men samtidigt distinkt doft av bränt damm och apelsinskal. För mig ett doftminne som för med sig en nostalgisk känsla av trygghet, ungefär samma resultat som uppnås genom att avlyssna OBLIVIOUS förstlingsverk "Goons And Masters". Deras stoner har rötterna djupt förankrade i sjuttiotalet och band som LED ZEPPELIN, BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE och BLACK SABBATH, men har även snappat upp element från samtida namn som BLACK STONE CHERRY och svenska genrekollegorna i DOZER. Framför allt kan kanske likheter med de sistnämnda höras, vilket åtminstone i mina öron är något klart positivt.

OBLIVIOUS levererar tung och skitig rock, emellanåt lätt psykedelisk och ofta med en aningen sorgsen nerv, och sjuttiotalet är som sagt ständigt närvarande i såväl riffkonstruktion som sångstil. Bitvis tenderar "Goons And Masters" att på grund av igenkänningsfaktorn att bli aningen för välbekant; aningen för trygg. I de ögonblick den nämnda sorgsna nerven tillåts ta större plats är det problemet dock som bortblåst. De maffiga, malande avslutningarna på "Master of Time" och "Blind Faith" är båda högeligen angenäma, men kronan på verket är sjunde spåret "Dead End Night". Här bjuder Linköpings-sönerna på en låt vars nakna känslosamhet och riviga desperation träffar rakt i hjärtat, och lämnar mig med en klump i halsen och antydan till en tår i ögonvrån. Denna extremt höga nivå når OBLIVIOUS för all del inte med debuten som helhet, men man visar ändå klart och tydligt att man är ett välkommet bidrag till den svenska stonerscenen. 7/10 - Metal Centralen

Stonerrock ist eigentlich gar nicht so meine Sache, da ich die ursprünglichen 70er Bands bevorzuge, aber OBLIVIOUS aus Schweden haben mir da echt den Schneid abgekauft mit ihren zwar völlig retrohardrockigen Songs nebst ein paar hypnotisch spacigen Stonerrockeinflüssen, die allerdings sehr viel Melodie mit sich bringen, sehr intensive, leidenschaftliche Melodien wohlgemerkt.

Das flotte "Throne" ist ein Ohrwurm sondergleichen, das groovige "Master of time" durchdringt Dich wie eine Flutwelle göttlichen Lichts. Das nenne ich mal inspiriert. Ansonsten gibt es wuchtig erdige Killerriffs, immer gut und zackig gespielt, mal eher wogend, dann in den schnelleren Momenten schön kraftvoll und aggressiv, dem klassischen Hardrock stets näher als modernen Trends. Bluesrock und Southernrock spielen mit hinein. Im Grunde ist das hier typische Amimucke, aber gut, die Schweden retrorocken momentan echt höllenheiß.

Was mir auffällt, sind die mehrstimmigen Refrains, die hier und da auftauchen, immer dezent, aber durchaus vernehmbar. Der Leadgesang ist mittelhoch und angeraut, ein typischer Bluesrock / Southernrock Crooner, der nicht ganz so aus der Masse heraussticht, dennoch aber Feeling mit sich bringt. Nun, Charisma will erarbeitet sein.

Was der Gesang an Eigenständigkeit missen lässt, das ist nicht allzuviel, wird durch die unbändige Power und die packenden Kompositionen rausgeholt. Und wirklich, der Sänger könnte schon vor 40 Jahren bei WARHORSE aus England oder bei den BLACK CAT BONES (aus denen FREE und FOGHAT hervorgingen) das Mikro geschwungen haben.

Die Musik von OBLIVIOUS stellt keine großen Anforderungen an den Hörer, er soll sich in dieser Klangwoge, die ihn umspült und vielleicht sogar fortspült, einfach gehen lassen. Bier auf, runter damit, von den Beats und pumpenden Bassläufen, den peitschenden Riffs und den Harmonien hin und her treiben lassen, bis man vor Erschöpfung, aber komplett zufrieden einfach umfällt.

Das mit psychedelisch heißem Mittelteil ausgestattete "Bring it on me" ist ein weiteres Highlight der Scheibe. Seit 40 Jahren kaum erneuerter Stil, aber soviel Spiritualität und Kraft, dass es Deine Seele einfach abfackelt. Oder "Dead end night", ein orgeliger, zutiefst melancholischer Song, eine halbe Ballade mit eruptiven Parts, der die Stimmung wiederspiegelt, die man nach dem Erwachen aus einem wundervollen Traum und dem ersten verschlafenen Blick auf die tristgraue Realität verspürt, wenn man merkt, dass der Platz im Bett neben einem doch leer und kalt ist. Der geheimnisvolle Hardrock verspielter, übrigens auch sehr wilder Natur, welcher sich dann hieraus entwickelt, kann mit jedem klassischen Hit der 70er locker in Sachen Größe mithalten, auch wenn stilistisch keine Innovationen zu befürchten sind.

OBLIVIOUS schaffen es nicht, wirklich modern zu klingen, haben dafür eine zeitlos herrliche Art, den gebannt lauschenden Zottel vor der Anlage richtig in Wallung zu bringen. Auch wenn sie mit ihren Spacerockeinflüssen zuweilen eben auf diesen Stonerkram einsteuern, sie sind weit davon entfernt, sich elender Plastikmusik zu öffnen. Insgesamt eine wirklich gute, lebendige Hardrockscheibe, die man auch als 70er Fan gerne haben darf.
