"GigMaven’s New Artist of the Week: OBMJ – Orquestra Brasileira de Música Jamaicana"

I’m of the opinion that any music can be played in the style of reggae, and that this never gets old (see Easy Star All Stars brilliant transformations of Pink Floyd and Radiohead…staples of any awesome summer day). I find that warm weather makes me think of reggae music, and vice versa. NYC is going through its first spell of warm weather, and nothing could be more proper than having Orquesta Brasileira de Música Jamaicana as GigMaven’s new artist of the week.

OBMJ, the Brazilian Orchestra of Jamaican Music, is a nine-piece group that combines some of the best rhythms of all time with some of the more classic pop songwriting of the twentieth century (“Águas de Março,” “Summer Samba,” “Na Baixa do Sapateiro” for instance). I think this is a killer formula, one that’s great on a recording as well as live. OBMJ brings hardcore musicianship to the table. They’re a great, full sounding band, and next time they’re in New York, I’ll be there.

Next week at Porto Musical in Recife, Brazil, OBMJ will be performing to an international audience of music industry delegates. Last week in São Paulo they played a major concert and they’re planning on touring the US and Canada this summer.

Bio

To dance like there's no tomorrow... OBMJ, Orquestra Brasileira de Música Jamaicana, plays the kind of music that really makes you move; they reinvented Brazilian classics such as "Águas de Março" by Tom Jobim and "Carinhoso" by Pixinguinha, among others, creating an unique atmosphere with groovy ska, rocksteady and early reggae rhythms.

Created in 2005 by producer Sergio Soffiatti and trumpeter Felippe Pipeta, OBMJ tours with 9 musicians on stage and is currently performing in prestigious venues in Brazil. OBMJ has released its first album in 2001, earning great reviews from specialized magazines, newspapers and blogs. Enjoy the groove!
