Always Is The Time To Make Everything is a neat little EP, and a good way to introduce the world to the soft spoken nature of Ocean Leaves, aka multi-instrumental singer-songwriter Timothy Poitras.
Hailing from Canada, now a native to Australia, Poitras take on folk/ indie is a subtle one, the use of cello, double bass and piano creating an undercurrent of anxiety, juxtaposed nicely with his light and soothing voice. Nothing here is trying to be too clever or make a bold statement and there is feeling that Poitras could easily be just the bloke who lives next door.
Opening track The Ocean creeps in gently from the get-go, the finger plucked guitar and piano telling the tale of one who is far from home, while Lazy chronicles the everyman’s struggle to get off their ass and make something of themselves. More light hearted songs like Skin offers a jovial take on the perils of getting old and the fears of missed opportunities. The quiet moments on closing track Water ushers in a violent explosion of drums and guitars before sinking back beneath the melancholy of Poitras vocals.
Always Is The Time To Make Everything is a solid debut effort, and makes Ocean Leaves one to watch out for in the future.

Leaves are a rag-tag collection of Brisbane multi-instrumentalists
headed up by Canadian import Timothy Poitras. They play in the vicinity
of indie folk, but they've evolved beyond “dude with an acoustic guitar
sings about his feelings”, layering a string section, banjo, horns and
even the occasional accordion into a rich, emotive sound that's best
heard live.
Poitras spent his twenties making music for himself, until he decided
to quit messing around, recording an EP (Always Is The Time To Make
Everything) while living in the Blue Mountains in 2013. After he moved
to Brisbane, he recruited his current crew and started playing gigs.
While the EP is an impressive debut, reflecting all that time spent
noodling in his bedroom, Poitras made the right decision in getting a
band together. On record, his songs wear their influences – the quiet
introspection of The National, the emotive questing of Grizzly Bear, the
wandering melodies of Bon Iver – but with his band, they become
something bigger and deeper.
Ocean Leaves are madly gigging around Brisbane so keep an eye out for
