Odd Modern

The minute they began playing the whole place erupted. The audience was shaking, bopping and swaying to an electronic pulse that seemed to emanate from somewhere other than the stage. The sound was huge! And it was coming from two people! Every song was like a “mega hit”; something that you would of already heard on the radio. It was awesome. They are awesome.

I remember meeting Odd Modern offstage before a show during my residency at Crash Mansion in fall of 2007 and was immediately drawn to this unassuming boy/girl duo. The girl had an innocent look with hidden strength behind her sweet smile. The guy carried a silent confidence under his soft spoken exterior. They were cute kids just getting their feet wet and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.

Odd Modern is Girardeau Berdin (on drums,backing vocals, programming) and Vanina Alfaro (on keyboard and vocals).

“Actually, we met on Craig’s List. Girardeau had been in and out of bands for a few years and was working on writing his own music. I had just escaped a music producer that wanted to turn me into the next Gwen Stefani, and I was looking to work on something a little more my style. When I found Girardeau and checked out his MySpace page, I instantly loved his music. We got together, I learned his songs, and it just clicked!” states Vanina.

Almost all the songs so far have been written and produced by Girardeau on his playback/sequencing machine, where he is able to program the guitar and bass parts to play while he drums along.

“I was just singing at first, then Girardeau asked me if I wanted to play keys, so I started learning. Now I can sing, play, and work the machine so that our live shows can sound like they do on the recordaings.” says Vanina. “We write songs together now. We like the same kind of music, so our songs mesh naturally into something we both like”.

The songs are musical gems that sound like the passing waves of familiar dance grooves while still feeling completely new school. Their live shows bump with excitement as they run through hit after hit. The last time I saw them they ended their set with an excellent cover of the song Toxic by Britney Spears that lifted the crowd up then slammed us all down to the ground, convulsing and wanting more.

Their latest CD Greatest Mrs. is full of infectious electro-rock that will get your booty shaking. Add in catchy melodies and inspired lyrics and you’ve got the makings of a super-group. - The Citizen L.A.
