Bio

Marcus Piscaer is a guitarist, producer and vocalist from Toronto, Canada. His influences are broad and his sounds draw from the likes of Miles Davis, King Tubby, Fela Kuti, and Massive Attack. His sonic textures have been described as a fusion of many different sounds layered together in an organic, complex and psychedelic way.

Born in Miami in 1980, Marcus spent most of his childhood in Paris. Growing up he showed strong artistic tendencies and immersed himself in painting and drawing. At the age of 11, Marcus picked up the Guitar. Absorbed with learning the instrument, he was self taught for a year, then began taking up classical lessons. While classical guitar was an enjoyable challenge, naturally Marcus’ real interest was in the new music movements that were going on. His tastes evolved to the music of Nirvana, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine, and many of the other bands of that era.

After his Parents split up when Marcus was 13, he was sent off to boarding school in the U.S. He played in a punk band and had a roommate from Harlem that got him open to hip hop music.

During the summer after his freshman year, he befriended some Jamaicans who introduced him to reggae beyond Bob Marley. When he went back to school, he found that most members of his band had gotten themselves expelled. With his recent change in musical interests to a more reggae, jazz/hip hop, and electronic based music, the relevance of the guitar became less applicable. This lead to the abandonment of the guitar for the remainder of high school.

After high school Marcus went to university in Toronto to study environmental studies. He got seriously into alternative energy technology, though not much was offered on that topic in his program. That summer, Marcus backpacked around Ethiopia and a bit of Egypt. He then took a year off and worked as an alternative energy financial journalist in the Netherlands.

It was around that time that Marcus began questioning his current life path. He picked up the guitar again at the age of 22 and decided that his honest desire was to be a musician. He was more into trip-hop type music at that point, and decided to build a home studio. However, the guitar soon took over as he drifted away from the computer all together.

With a keen interest in mastering musical improvisation, Marcus, is now working on a demo for his collective Odes to a Blue Wave. He plans on producing a CD and performing within the next coming year.
