Bio

After a brief spell working together in sadly defunct combo New World Souls, the duo got focus and locked down in a warehouse in 2002 and emerged as Offcutts with their debut EP, “Homestyle”.

A retort to rock’s hollow revivalism and the electronic scene’s complacency, “Homestyle” put Offcutts on the musical map. Radio stations started to spin their disc and they hit the road with the likes of Jimi Tenor, George Clinton and Nightmares on Wax, as well as introducing themselves to Australia’s festival-going throngs.

If that was a promising start, 2003 exploded with the single “Break It Down” (James Brown)”, 2 minutes and 34 seconds of the sexiest blues beat and guitar crunch you will ever hear. An instant airwaves fave – both on Australia’s prestigious JJJ public network and commercial stations in every major city – and the subject of many covetous offers from advertising agencies who could sense the combination of hipness and songwriting durability, the tune ushered in an even busier 2004.

With the decks cleared and another memorable Australian summer of touring concluded, the band unleashed in “Paper Bag & Plastic Bag” two five-track EPs that made explicit the group’s ability to move between genres. The “Paper” disc boasted guitar gun slinging and pop hooks, while “Plastic” detonated the discothèque with a bouillabaisse of funk, breaks, tech house and dancehall stylings. Computers can multi-task, why not musicians?

In summary Offcutts then delivered the album “Thrift Shop Boutique”, compiled from the three previous EP’s it boasts their best moments to date and provides the refutable proof that Offcutts have truly mastered the genre hopscotch.

Ensconced on Rubber Records, one of Australia’s leading alternative tastemakers (the label that introduced Jet to the world with their “Dirtysweet” EP), Offcutts are gearing up for their next album and preparing to take on new challenges. Given their already fast rise, you’d be foolish to bet against them. Just press play and enjoy.
