"JON HARRIS – BIG: RAP BARS WHICH SET THE BAR FOR HIP HOP ARTISTS"

Jon Harris was bang on with his latest single “BIG”, the Hip Hop scene is on its death bed. Yet, as long as there are artists with the ability to wax lyrical with inspiring verses, there’s still a ray of hope for the genre.

As slick as his instantaneously charismatic Rap style is, it is the beat which really set the anthemics and put the hype into the soundscape. The beat behind BIG is a massive step up from what you can usually expect from the Trap genre and other breaking artists. For a start, there’s actually rhythm in the tight arrangement which blends acoustic instrumentals for a real organic and textured soundscape. If there’s any Rap artist who deserves to blow up in 2019, it’s Jon Harris.

"Jon Harris – Big (Review)"

“Big” is the brand new single release from hip-hop artist Jon Harris. The production of this track stays true to the song’s title, and the sound is absolutely massive. “Big” is a really amazing example of how old-school rap influences can merge positively with new ideas, making for a very intriguing and forward-thinking style. More importantly, Jon’s sound is very personal, and his voice can be likened to some of the most influential rappers on the scene, including Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino, only to mention a few.

What we really enjoy about “Big” is certainly the fact that this sound has a unique spirit. It is energetic, but also thought-provoking, with a production attire that feels crisp and modern, with a lot of extra sizzle.

Jon recently released an official lyric video for this single, which is currently available on Youtube. The video helps listeners keep track of Jon’s outstanding delivery, and personal lyricism. His songwriting comes from a very honest place, and his words depict situations, hopes, dreams, and concepts that make of us can actually relate to! It’s a story about dreaming big, and overcoming struggles, no matter what life puts in our way! - Artistrack

"Can Established Artists Express the Same Level of Motivation and Hunger as Jon Harris on His Debut Single “Big”?"

The debut single release “Big” from New York recording artist, Jon Harris (@officialjholla), from his upcoming album Who Is Jon Harris? captures the motivational essence of the upcoming artist at the beginning of his journey up.

Encapsulating his vision for greatness, Jon Harris drops a manifesto-like vision of big things ahead for him in an anthem-like style. The opening grandeur of a brass section setting up an epic Rocky-like atmosphere, with a beat reminiscent of elements similar to the majestic quality of then-Puff Daddy’s “Victory.” I immediately thought how it’s been a while since I heard a motivational hip hop song, the kind that gives the energy to get through another rep at the gym, the kind that gives that feeling within to push through a state that holds back. This is exactly what Jon Harris’ “Big” does. It’s a motivational hip hop song in what’s become a desert for this style.
That is definitely something unique paying attention to artists right at the beginning of their careers still establishing themselves: the raw hunger for the come up before it becoming satiated and calmed with the money and status that a successful artist encounters.

The production work is a unique pull-away from the maximally compressed and limited loud sounds battling for the top of the volume war food chain today. The bass and drum machine combo takes from an almost late-80s, early-90s electro-dance and hip hop aesthetic, and the brass layering builds intensity throughout the verses toward a major hook climax, the kind of hook made to invigorate the crowd.

The hook of “Big” instantly grabs hold of the brain’s neurons, embedding itself into the memory reserve through a bouncing flow that immediately gives the impression of a stadium full of fans, bopping up and down with their hands in the air, mimicking its every word together with Jon Harris…

I think big, dream big, and I plan big
To make sure everything that I do is big
I try to get the most out of this life that I live
And the only way to do it is to do it big, so what’s up?

The beauty of Jon Harris’ “Big” is in how Jon acts out his desired future state, envisioning his status as an accomplished artist with a dedicated fan following. The song acts as an affirmation. It makes clear what Jon Harris is aiming at, and pieces together a unique ensemble of elements uncommon to the hip hop sounds we’re used to hearing today in order to achieve its motivational impression.

Bio

New York City-based hip-hop songwriter, wordsmith and producer Jon Harris creates down-to-earth tracks about his personal journey, life goals and the challenges of human connection. His poetic lyrics and conversational, emotional delivery style shed a bright, colorful light on the stories he tells and continue to move crowds during his energetic live performances. His fearless approach to crafting intricate instrumental melodies, harmonies and beats he has been inspired by modern rap and hip-hop visionaries Eminem, Kanye West, Jay-Z and J Cole. Harris’ upcoming major mixtape Destiny’s Calling 2 demonstrates his belief in the power of words as well as his commitment to bold lyrical improvisation and to experimenting with production techniques.

Harris’ passion for music began in the wide-open landscape of rap and hip-hop, the moment his brother and cousin started sharing their favorite artists. He fell in love with the many textures of these genres and, unable to choose just one instrument to study in middle school, his imagination and drive to make music were ignited in general music class when he was introduced to the Fruity Loops studio. Harris found a multi-track recording program that allowed him to record over beats he had dreamed up and put together his first full mixtape in ninth grade while studying writing and putting his own spin on the compound syllable style he admired in other artists’ work. From that point on, he decided he wanted to be a professional hip-hop recording artist and also to write songs and develop a command of the studio in order to produce all his own work as well as the work of other talented artist.

With his feet still firmly planted in New York, Harris still stirs up inventive rhymes and brings out the subtle nuances of different instruments and sounds that keep all his tracks fresh and make each one even more compelling than the last. He continues to evolve his original music by pulling elements from progressive rock, pop and other genres and styles beyond the hip-hop universe in order to deepen his artistry. After graduating from college, he found himself frustrated by the at times over-saturated music landscape and launched Black Widow Entertainment, a record label and production company through which he releases his own music and, as he explains, provides other talented, developing independent artists that want to gain more visibility with “a small means to live their dreams.”

To date, Harris has released two mixtapes: Destiny’s Calling and Welcome to My World. He put out “Chillin’,” the first single from the soon-to-be released Destiny’s Calling 2 in early 2015. True to his mission to put out totally original music, the song was self-produced with no samples from other artists’ tracks. Destiny’s Calling 2 will be available to the world in late 2015.
