"Exclusive Interview: Official Hot Mess (Lindsey and Kristy Landers)"

Lindsey and Kristy Landers are Official Hot Mess. With their four-piece male band in tow, this dynamic duo is circum-navigating the music world with a Young And sassy vibe, and some very catchy songs. Their clever lyrical twists and dance-fused melodies have given them a well-deserved edge over many of their pop/rock contemporaries.

Natives of Sarasota Florida, the blond sibs began writing songs at an early age, and were signed to a record deal before they graduated high school. Their music has been featured on hit shows such as Grey's Anatomy, The Hills, Jersey Shore, The City, and Super Sweet 16 (TV), but it was their single "Welcome to L.A." that put them on the map. With it's 'get up and dance' beat and well crafted lyrics, the song takes a playful poke at the eccentricities of living in L.A. The highly acclaimed video went to the No. 2 spot of MTVU, and featured cameo appearances by Flavor Flav and America's Top Model (TV) winner Adrianne Curry.

Now the recent high school grads are preparing to debut their next single called "Money Makes the Girl$ Go Round;" one they describe as "a sassy and playful party song."

Lindsey and Kristy sat down with PopStar not long after recording the single in Atlanta to discuss their passion for music, the dynamic of their creative relationship, and a chance meeting with one of their idols, Michael Jackson.
Although you were raised in Florida, you definitely have California roots. You were born in California. Your mother is actress Judy Landers, your aunt is actress Audry Landers - both very popular in the 1970's and 1980's. Your dad was a relief pitcher for the L.A. Dodgers. What made you pursue music as a career, despite your parents consciously moving you away from Hollywood at a Young Age?

Kristy: Although we were born in Hollywood, when we were little kids, our parents moved us as far away from L.A. as we could get. We went to a school for the academically gifted to keep us away from the entertainment industry, which obviously didn't work so well.

Lindsey: All throughout our childhood, we were basically just drawn to music. Music was our passion. We've been writing songs since we could write, practically. Some things you just can't change. We're really different from some of the "celebrity" kids out there because our parents aren't supporting us in this at all. They're being supportive as mom and dad just like any other parent would, but honestly, they would prefer that we become school teachers and live quaint little lifestyles, but they understand that this is our passion, and we're just doing it on our own.

Do you two ever get mistaken for twins?

Lindsey: That happens all the time, and I think we've actually gotten to the point where we answer to either name.

Kristy: Sometimes we say that we were twins born two years apart, but technically I think we were really born out of order. I'm the more mature of the two of us, though that's really not saying much.

Lindsey: I'm definitely the baby of the two of us. {laughs}
Can you give me a little background on The Formation of Official Hot Mess, starting with the name?

Lindsey: We call ourselves Official Hot Mess because trouble and mischief just always seems to have a way of finding us. Some crazy things have happened to us. One time, we thought we were getting on a flight to L.A. and we ended up in Puerto Rico.

Kristy: I think the name Official Hot Mess is also a spot on description of all the chaos and craziness that ensues when us and the four insane guys in our band hit the road. The name is also kind of an interesting take on the entertainment industry right now.

If you had to describe your music in three words, what would they be?

Kristy: That's tough with three words. I'm going to have to go with fun, party rock.

Lindsey: Relatable, fun, and there's something for everybody there. That's more than three words, but it's really hard to do. {laughs}

How does the writing process work for the two of you? Is there a particular formula that you follow?

Kristy: Honestly, it didn't start out as a formula, but it's naturally progressed to that state. We're inspired by anything and everything from getting rejected in Hollywood, to falling in love, and sometimes we'll just wake each other up in the middle of the night when we're inspired.

Lindsey: The creative process for us is writing and recording. It's like therapy for the soul. You can express anything you want to express, and it turns into something awesome.

Kristy: It's a lot cheaper than working with a shrink.

Lindsey, you have said that you believe in "organized chaos."

Lindsey: Absolutely!

Could you elaborate on that, and how it relates to your music?

Lindsey: Yes, I would say it definitely relates to my music. I have written songs on napkins, on clothing price tags, on receipts, pants, etc...It's ridiculous, and nobody but me could understand it. You walk into my bedroom and you would think a tornado had come through, but for me, I would know where everything is. It functions perfectly like that. You never know when the inspiration is going to hit, so you have to be prepared. The video and song "Welcome to L.A." has received a lot of buzz for it's tongue-in-cheek observations about life in L.A. What has been the most eye-opening thing about The Culture change from Florida to California?

Kristy: I think one of the craziest things for us was when our band (our band is from the same Little Town as we are) was pulling up to the Playboy mansion for the first time, and we had no idea what to expect. So the guys are freaking out because they saw this playmate and they were going ballistic in the van. Then we're at sound check and all of the sudden a naked playmate walks by. She was completely naked, and it's like, you don't know what to look at...it's like complete culture shock [laughs].

So I think that served as a little bit of an influence for the song "Welcome to L.A." and a lot of our other New Songs coming up too, because it's been an eye-opening experience for us.

Have you received any negative reactions about the song from your L.A. neighbors out there?

Kristy: Honestly, I wouldn't know. I try to steer clear of all the negativity and only focus on the positivity. But I think it's really an uplifting, fun song, and it's not a negative song, so I would hope that people see the positive and the fun side of it.

Lindsey: I think the anthem of the chorus is "Home of the brave and the mis-behaved." It means that they're not scared to go out there and be themselves, and do what they want to do.

You are clearly influenced by the earlier Rock, Alternative, and Pop genres, yet you have managed to morph it all into a sound that's current and unique to your own style. Was that a conscious effort or did it happen naturally through the creative process?

Kristy: I think it was part conscious and part natural, because most of our songs are Pop with an underlying Rock feel, and that comes from being influenced by incredible artists like Blondie, Heart, The Bengals, Cindy Lauper, etc.. Instead of emulating another artist, we want to create our path for other artists to follow in years to come.

Lindsey: I think our style comes pretty much from being influenced by different genres, whether it be Rock, Alternative, Hip Hop, etc.., and I think we bring an aspect of all of those different genres into our own style to make an Official Hot Mess [laughs}.

What has been the most rewarding, and in some cases perhaps, the most vindicating thing about reaching this level of success at such a Young Age?

Kristy: You know it's been a long road for us. We've been doing this for awhile and it's always been our passion. We had an album that was successful over in Asia, but now that we're finally achieving success in America, it's been really rewarding for us. To be able to go on the road and connect with all of our fans, and to see that all of the people are enjoying the music that we love creating, that's really a great feeling unlike anything else.

Lindsey: I think another one of the awesome things that we've been able to experience is working with great philanthropic organizations that are close to our hearts, like PITA and the Wounded Warrior Project. It's really rewarding to be able to go to the benefits, work with the Wounded Warriors, help homeless animals find homes, and keeping our oceans clean. It is really awesome.

Lindsey, you once went statue shopping with Michael Jackson.

Lindsey: We did. Kristy and I accidentally went statue shopping with Michael Jackson {laughs}. One day, we were early for an appointment so we made a pit stop and walked into this store, just to kill some time. All of the sudden, we hear swarms of paparazzi coming into the store - hundreds of them. So we're like 'Whoa, this can't be for us.' {laughs}. So, they shut down the entire store and now we're the only people in there. In walks Michael Jackson with an umbrella. So for us it was like 'who have you always wanted to meet?' and it was Michael Jackson. So we were freaking out and thinking 'what do we do?'.

Kristy: We tried to be really respectful of his privacy, so we walked into another room so he didn't think we were going to invade his space. You've heard so many things about him like 'he's a germophobe' or whatever, and he was at the time, a living legend. so it's a bit intimidating to be around him.

A couple of minutes later, he walked into the room that we were in, and he stood there and talked to us for over half an hour. He was the nicest man I've ever met. He was not a germophobe at all. He gave us both hugs when we left. It was a great time, and a really incredible experience.

Kristy, how long have you been playing poker, and will we soon see you on the Celebrity World Poker tour?

Kristy: {laughs) It's a strong possibility, but technically I have to become the legal age first, because I'm only 18.

Lindsey: But she can play in the Bahamas

Kristy: Exactly. We went to the Bahamas this past winter and I made a killing. It was a blast for me. I definitely want to get more into it when I'm 21.

Lindsey: She rocks that poker face.Kristy: I do.

What is next for Official Hot Mess? Are you working on a New Song?

Kristy: Yes, we are. We just got back from Atlanta where we recorded and wrote an awesome song that we're so excited for everyone to hear. We're going to do the video for it in the next couple of months.

Lindsey: Yea, we're going to be doing the music video for the song. It's called "Money Makes the Girl$ Go Round," so we're really excited about that.

What message would you like to send out to your fans?

Lindsey: I think we just want to thank everybody for their love and support, and keep your eyes open for our new stuff coming out!

"MUSIC SPOTLIGHT: OFFICIAL HOT MESS"

You've heard their music on every hit show from “The City” and “Jersey Shore” to “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Dollhouse.” Recently, sisters, Kristy and Lindsey Landers - better known as Official Hot Mess - released a music video for their hit single “Welcome to L.A.” The duo was more than happy to discuss the video and lots more about themselves in this new interview exclusively for Hollywood the Write Way.
Since you are sisters, is it easier or harder working together?
I think for the most part it is easier because you know you always have someone on your side. We are very forward with each other and balance each other well. We bicker but we don't argue very much.

I love the song “Welcome to L.A.” but what is your favorite and least favorite part about LA?
We were born in LA so we love LA. Our parents moved us to Florida when we were young to keep us out of the entertainment business...which obviously worked wonderfully (laughs). Everything is so much bigger and exciting coming from Florida to LA.

Your music has appeared on many shows! What show were you most excited about having your music appear on and what shows would you like your music to appear on?
We were so excited when we saw Snooki and The Situation fist pumping to our song! That was the most exciting because we didn't know the song would be on, we were just watching the show and all of a sudden our song came on. When our music played on "The City" end credits, it was so just so fitting for what was happening at the end of the episode, it was perfect. I'm a big fan of CSI Miami so that would be great.

When did you decide that you seriously wanted to pursue a music career?
We wrote our first song when we were on a TBS kids show when we were really little and haven't stopped since. We put demos on the internet, was signed and have toured and it has been so awesome.

You have toured with everyone from the Bangles to We the Kings. What has been your favorite country to tour and who have you learned from the most whether about the music or about the business?
Japan was definitely the coolest experience for us. It's so different from where we are from, this little beach town. It's kind of like New York but bigger and quiet. It was a really incredible experience for us because the audience was very receptive to our music and were really nice and respectful. Also, touring with The Bangles was a huge honor because we really look up to them.

What went behind the decision to have Adrianne Curry in the music video?
We met Adrianne at a charity event that we played at the Playboy Mansion. So we talked for awhile and told her about the song and she loved it. So we thought she would be great addition to the video and she was awesome.

Would you ever record a live album?
We would love to record a live album. I think the live performance aspect is our favorite aspects of the entire music scene because it's such a great moment to connect with the fans, who respond to everything.

Lastly...you two are vegetarians, what would you say to someone considering being vegetarian?
Well we have never really had the desire to try meat. Our mom never denied us meat, we just have never had the desire to try it. We are big animal activists, we are members of PETA, and we have tons of animals at our house. But we would cook someone a delicious tofu dinner and that would instantly convince them (laughs). But really, when you do the research, people can see how much healthier it is. But I think it depends on the person, if someone is convinced that vegetarianism is the right choice for them that is great, but if not, it's just not for them.

Thought of the day:
"Heaven is by favor; if it were by merit your dog would go in and you would stay out. Of all the creatures ever made [man] is the most detestable. Hello girls! How are you?
Hey! We're doing great, and hope you all are too!

Could you please introduce yourselves?
We’re Kristy and Lindsey Landers, of the band, Official Hot Mess.

How did you come up with the name, Official Hot Mess?
We call ourselves Official Hot Mess because it seems as though mischief and trouble always have a way of finding us!...like the time we thought we were on a flight to LA and ended up in Puerto Rico...or the time my spike heel got caught on Lindsey's pants and I accidentally pantsed her on stage! Haha!
Now you two are sisters. Do you guys argue a lot, or are you closer because of the band?
We do argue, but we also balance each other and respect each other and are best friends. I think being in a band together has brought us closer, but also gives us more topics that are open for debate, which potentially leads to conflict over minute artistic differences, lol. We always resolve our differences and come to a mutual consensus together as a team.

What inspires your songs?
We're inspired by anything and everything, from getting rejected in Hollywood to falling in love. Sometimes we'll wake each other up in the middle of the night, when the inspiration hits, and just start writing.
How did you choose the rock genre?
Most of our songs are pop with an underlying rock feel which comes from being influenced by artists like Blondie, Pat Benetar, and The GoGo's. We're influenced by rock, alternative, hip hop, etc and bring aspects of each genre into our personal style.

Out of all the songs you’ve written, which is your favourite and why?
That's a tough one because we feel such a strong connection to all of the songs that we've written but if we have to pick one, our favorite is a fun, upbeat party song that we love called "Dressed Up"

Which do you prefer, song-writing/recording or performing?
We love the creative process of writing and recording (its kind of like therapy for the soul, lol, you get to express inner most thoughts and feelings) , but performing live is the best because it gives us the opportunity to really connect with our fans.
You’ve toured with a variety of people. Is there a chance of having your own tour in the near future?
Absolutely, we've been so lucky to be able to share the stage with some really incredible artists, but we're looking forward to headlining our own tour in the near future.

What upcoming projects do you have regarding your music?
We're so excited because we just found out that our music is going to be featured in a new Nickelodeon show that premieres in July!

umour has it that you’re talented actresses as well! As you looking to pursue an acting career as well?
We love all aspects of entertainment, but right now, music is our main focus, but we're definitely looking forward to getting more involved in acting in the future.

Do you have any upcoming projects?
We have some really exciting television stuff in the works-- we're working on a fun show that goes behind the scenes and documents the crazy antics of Official Hot Mess.

What are your goals for the next few years?
We're hoping to continue making music that our fans can relate to and want to spread a sense of fun and positivity to our fans through our music. Another goal of ours is to reach a level of success so we can be major supporters and contributors to philanthropic organizations that are close to our hearts such as PETA, Clean Oceans and The Wounded Warrior Project, etc.

Where can people listen/buy your music?
You can find out lots about us and hear our music on our MySpace page--- www.MySpace.com/OfficialHotMess, our facebook page, www.FaceBook.com/OfficialHotMess, and follow us on twitter-- twitter.com/OfficialHotMess - Portrait Magazine

"Official Hot Mess: Lindsey and Kristy Landers Exclusive Interview"

TheStarScoop.Com spoke to Lindsey and Kristy Landers about being an “Official Hot Mess,” music, each other, and more!

THE STAR SCOOP:
Tell us about your sound for people who aren’t super familiar with you yet and what they should expect to hear.

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
We’re in a band called Official Hot Mess. Our music has been featured on shows like The Jersey Shore, The Hills, The City, and My Super Sweet Sixteen and we have really fun, pop rock music. We try to have a song that can fit every mood that our fans can relate to.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What is the main avenue where people are learning about you?

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
I think all of our placements have been really great as far as exposure goes. I know we’ve been so excited about some of the placements, like on The Jersey Shore, we saw The Situation first-pumping to our music or on The City when Whitney and her boyfriend broke up, our song was the perfect breakup song for them. And I think having our music placed on these shows is a really great way to showcase the relatability of the songs and it’s been a great opportunity for us to expand our fan base.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Who is your fanbase? What is the group that your music appeals to?

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
I don’t think we have a really specific age group or anything too specific because anybody can find a connection to our music or love it or anyone can relate to it, so hopefully that will expand to a broad audience.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Is there a message you want people to take away from what they hear when they listen to your music?

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
We’re going to make music that we love and we want to create music that our fans can relate to. There’s fun and positivity to our music.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Tell us about the song “Welcome 2 LA.”
LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
We were born in Hollywood. Our parents were in the show business industry. Our dad was a professional athlete and our mom was an actress and they moved us as far away from Hollywood as we could get and tried to keep us out of the entertainment business. We ended up in a sleepy little beach town in Florida going to a school for the academically and musically gifted.

We’ve always had a passion for music, and our parents figured that would be a great way to keep us focused and keep us from joining a band. But we still have our creativity. I think our music shows our place in the industry right now. Everybody is so serious and cynical and they’re always trying to bring you down, so if you want to make it, you might as well go out there and be yourself. I guess a major inspiration for “Welcome to LA” derives from the fact that we come from such a small beach town in Florida, it’s really just a culture shock coming to LA and seeing all the crazy things that are happening.

THE STAR SCOOP:
You’re sisters. What’s it like working with each other?

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
I think it’s really great because you always have somebody to bounce ideas off of. You always know you have somebody on your team but at the same time, we do argue but we balance each other and respect each other and we’re best friends. I think being in a band together has really brought us closer. It definitely gives us more things that are open for argument, because we can always differ with creative ideas and stuff like that. But we always resolve our difference and we come to mutual consensus together as a team.

THE STAR SCOOP:
You’re going to have a reality show for VH1.

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
Yep, that’s the plan! It’s really going to give our fans an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the crazy antics and the chaos that ensues between us and the guys in our band. It’s going to be a really fun opportunity for us to open our lives to all of our fans and give them a chance to really connect to us and be honest with them.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What should new (and old) fans who watch the show know about you?

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
The one thing we want to make sure is portrayed is that we’re really being honest with our fans and we’re opening our lives to them so they can feel like they are a part of it, because they really are such an important part of our lives. Also, I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by the fact that we’re more than just typical reality show blonde bimbos and we actually have a sense of musical ability and we incorporate our personalities and our sense of humor into that.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What message do you have for your fans?

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
We want them to know that this is us. We’re real, take it or leave it because we’re going to be honest with it. Hopefully they will love it! All of our fans so far have been so supportive. We love them!

THE STAR SCOOP:
Tell us about playing live and seeing your fans vs. recording.

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
We definitely love the creative process of writing and recording, but at the same time, it’s such a special opportunity for us performing live because you get the opportunity to really connect with your fans and see what they like about your live show – what they have good responses to and what they don’t get as excited about – and it really gives you the chance to grow with the audience and be able to connect to them more. There’s nothing that can really compare to the connection that you feel with your fans when you are on stage.

THE STAR SCOOP:
When can fans see you live?

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
So far, we’ve had a lot of great opportunities to tour with some incredible musical acts. But we’re looking forward to headlining our own tour coming up soon.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Anything else to add?

LINDSEY AND KRISTY LANDERS:
We’re really excited. We’re getting ready to start production on our second music video for our new single. We’re really excited for everyone to go see it. It’s going to be a fun video. I think people will really like it! - The Star Scoop

"Music to Our Ears: Official Hot Mess"

Introduce us to the members of Official Hot Mess and tell us how you’d describe your musical style.

Kristy (the swashbuckler)- Vocals/Bass, Lindsey (the mastermind)- Vocals/Guitar, Adam (the exhibitionist)- Guitar, Joe (the jokester)- Drums Billy (the brunt of Joe’s jokesterness)- Bass, Jake (the one with the sick hair!)- Guitar. You could describe our music as Blondie meets Cindy Lauper…its fun, quirky music that’s sure to get a party started, perfect for a girl’s night out!

How did the band come to be? What is the meaning behind the name?

We wrote our first song when we were really little kids on a PBS children’s television show and haven’t stopped writing and creating music since! When we were in highschool, we put our music on the internet and got offered a deal with a record label in Asia. That album became really successful and we even got to tour Asia! The guys in our band grew up in the same sleepy little beach town in southern Florida as we did–Now we’re looking forward to bringing our music to the US!

The name Official Hot Mess suits us because it seems as though mischief and trouble always have a way of finding us!…like the time we thought we were on a flight to LA and ended up in Puerto Rico…or the time my spike heel got caught on Lindsey’s pants and I accidentally pantsed her on stage! Need we say more? lol!

What was it like growing up with famous parents? What was their initial reaction to your decision to form Official Hot Mess?

Honestly, we had a pretty normal childhood. Although we were born in LA, when we were little kids, our parents moved us as far away from Hollywood as we could get, and sent us to a school for the “academically gifted” to keep us away from the entertainment industry…that worked really well…not, lol! Although we are VERY respectful of our parents’ careers, they understand that music is our passion and they’re letting us pursue this on our own and follow our own path. But one of the strangest things was when a guy was picking me up for a date and when he came in to meet my parents, he actually brought my mom’s Playboy cover for her to sign! Talk about awkward haha!

IWho were your biggest musical influences?

We try not to specifically emulate any other artist but instead to create our own path for artists in years to come to follow. But we are influenced by Blondie, The Go Gos, Pat Benetar, Cindy Lauper and Heart.

Your music can be heard on an impressive list of television shows. Where might we have heard your music on TV and why do you think your music provides the perfect backdrop for so many popular shows?

You may have heard our music on The Hills, The City, My Super Sweet 16, Nickelodeon, and a bunch of others… but the coolest was seeing Snookie and The Situation “fist pumping” to our song on The Jersey Shore! haha!
I think our music makes a great backdrop because of the honesty and relateability. Our song, Crashing Down, was the perfect breakup song for Whitney and Jay on The City.

You are passionate about more than just music. Both of you have been vegetarians since birth and give lots of your time and support to the protection and humane treatment of animals. Tell us about some of the work you with animals do and why it’s so important to you.

Animals are our passion in life. We volunteer at animal shelters in our spare time. We’re “match makers” at the Humane Society (which means that we not only walk the dogs, play with the dogs and clean their kennels, but we also get to help people find their perfect pet!). We also volunteer at the Cat Depot and our band, Official Hot Mess, will perform at their annual gala and just shot a PSA!

We’ll be working with Save Our Seabirds to help injured or disabled seabirds who have been affected by the oil spill in the gulf.

Aside from the 4 humans, our family consists of…3 canines (Champ, a Collie; Teddy, a Chow/Lab; Princessa, a homeless Jack Russell who we rescued off the street), 1 cockatoo (Sage, who travels with us everywhere), 1 Senegal (Zorro), 4 cockatiels (Baby Spice, Mohawk, Mark-Kate and Ashley), 4 ducks (Huey, Louie, Duey and Donald), a blue tongued skink (Bono), a 5 foot long Iguana (Spike), and our newest additions to the menagerie– Snookie, a Bantam Silkie Hen; and Vinnie, a Black Giant Jersey Cock. We’re so excited… because Snookie just started laying eggs! As far as marine life goes, we have a tank full of seahorses and shrimp (whom we rescued from a bait shop). They’re amazing creatures who love to play and ride on the stream of bubbles from the water filter in their tank! lol…unfortunately dad (former MLB pitcher, Tom Niedenfuer’s) favorite food is shrimp, so we have to keep an eye on them!

Kristy you are quite the daredevil. Tell us about some of the activities that you enjoy. What draws you to activities that would scare most of us to death?

Growing up, I performed in a circus. I did everything from flying trapeze to walking the high wire! Training and then performing such intense skills taught me great discipline and concentration. I love the rush you get from flying the trapeze–its a natural high (literally haha!)

Lindsey you love to cook. What meal would you cook if you really wanted to impress someone? What is your favorite dessert to make?

I learned to cook for “team dinners” when I played volleyball in highschool (I was offered a scholarship to play college volleyball at Michigan State) I make a mean coconut curry with tofu and veggies! But if I was really trying to impress someone, I’d make them my special chocolate chip rum cake!

Confession time: When you’re not cranking out music with Official Hot Mess whose tunes are cranking out of your iPod? Which five songs are getting the most play on each of your iPod’s right now?

Lindsey:

I’ve Got Friends by Manchester Orchestra
Billionaire by Travis McCoy and Bruno Mars
This Afternoon by Nickelback
Summer of ‘69 by Bryan Adams
Fast Cars and Freedom by Rascal Flatts
Kristy:

Given Up by Linkin Park
F**k you by Lily Allen
Riot by Three Days Grace
It Wasn’t Me by Shaggy
Heartbreaker by Pat Benetar

"Official Hot Mess Visit Zang Radio"

Official Hot Mess, a teen pop-rock band featuring sisters Kristy and Lindsey Landers, visited with Zach Sang on Zang Radio the other day to talk about the story behind the group’s name, their VH1 reality show and how the genre has gotten a negative stigma lately, practically having a farm back home in Florida, singing at the Playboy mansion, and more. Listen to the interview via YouTube below - Pop Dirt

""Official Hot Mess talks VH1, Playboy Mansion, Flava Flav and Adrianne Curry." - Interview Read more: http://www.zoiksonline.com/2010/07/official-hot-mess-talks-vh1-playboy.html#ixzz10ThBtNPI"

Official Hot Mess is duo made up of two very good looking sisters, but don’t think that’s all they have to offer. They have a music video out entitled “Welcome 2 LA” featuring Adrianne Curry and Flava Flav. They’ve played the Playboy Mansion on more than one occasion and they already have a reality television deal. Recently I got a chance to talk with Official Hot Mess.

Q – How would you describe your music?

A - You could describe our music as Blondie meets Cindy Lauper – it’s fun, quirky music that's sure to get a party started; perfect for a girl's night out!

Q – How long have you been playing music, and what was the moment that made you decide this is what you wanted to do?

A - We wrote our first song when we were really little kids on a PBS children's television show and haven't stopped writing and creating music since. We were born in Hollywood, but our parents moved us away from the LA scene to a sleepy little beach town in Florida where we went to a public school for the academically and musically gifted. Despite their attempts to keep us out of the entertainment industry, music was always our passion and we were creating music for fun since we were little kids. We were sort of rebels in our high school (that consisted of a student body of certified geniuses) in the sense that we weren’t focused on our academics, and we solely wanted to pursue our music. We play piano and guitar by ear and pick out our melodies that way.
Q – Do you think being the daughters of two celebrities has been a crutch you’ve had to overcome or has it helped in terms of getting your music out there?

A - We totally respect our parents’ and their respective careers, but music is our passion and we are pursuing this on our own. We’re really lucky that they raised us with such good heads on our shoulders, so we are confident in making our own decisions, and following our own paths. They really have no connections to help us in the music industry… and that’s fine, because we’re smart and independent young women pursuing our own goals.

Q – There seems to be a level of humor in your music and video. How important is the comedic element to you?

A - I think a lot of people are surprised by the fact that we're more than just typical blonde bimbos. We actually have a sense of musical ability and we incorporate our personalities and sarcastic sense of humor into that. The sarcasm and a little bit of humor intrinsically comes with Official Hot Mess. Look at our name, lol!

Q – How did you manage to get Flava Flav and Adrianne Curry for your video “Welcome 2 LA?”

A -The first time our band played at The Playboy Mansion, we met Adrienne Curry. She heard us play the song, and she was really into it. She loved the sarcastic flavor to it, and she wanted to be in the video so she smoked weed and played Guitar Hero in the video! We met Flavor Flav at another event our band was playing at, and we clicked, so the video for “Welcome 2 LA” is set at Flav’s house party.

Q – Tell us about performing at the Playboy Mansion. How did that come about and what is that experience like?

A - Performing at the Playboy Mansion for the first time could be described in 2 words - culture shock, lol! With us and the 4 guys in our band coming from this quaint little town in Florida, it was an amazing experience to perform there. They say when you’re nervous, you should picture the audience naked, well you can’t do that at The Playboy Mansion, cause most of them already are, lol. We have a great friendship with Hef, and he’s really supportive of our music.
is point, lol, because we really don’t have anything to hide, you might as well go out there and be yourself because there's no point in trying to be someone you're not.

Q – Who are some of your early influences?

A - Most of our songs are pop with an underlying rock feel which comes from being influenced by artists like Blondie, Cyndi Lauper, The Bangles, Pat Benatar, and The GoGo's. We're influenced by rock, alternative, hip hop, etc and bring aspects of each genre into our personal style.

Q – Thanks for taking the time and good luck with everything. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A - You can find out lots about us and hear our music on our MySpace page at www.MySpace.com/OfficialHotMess, our Facebook page at www.FaceBook.com/OfficialHotMess, and follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/OfficialHotMess.

"Video: Official Hot Mess, ‘Welcome to LA’"

I hear “reality show” and “VH1? and my skin crawls, and this vapid exercise in party music is representative of why Los Angeles gets a bad rap. But I post it not because of Official Hot Mess’ forthcoming reality series, nor because of the cameos by Flava Flav and Adrienne Curry (whoever she is), but out of my love of sports trivia: OHM plasticgirls Lindsey and Kristy Landers are the daughters of actress Judy Landers and former Dodgers relief pitcher Tom Niedenfuer — an otherwise fine major-leaguer who, 25 years ago this fall, served up critical home runs to the St. Louis Cardinals’ Ozzie Smith and Jack Clark in the National League Championship Series, making a certain Redbirds fan deliriously happy - LA Music Magazine- Buzz Bands LA

"Lindsey & Kristy of Official Hot Mess"

Summer; the season I loathe for its heat and ability to make people sport sandals on a daily basis. In California I sat, sweated and waited for the Landers sisters, Lindsey and Kristy, to call. They’re pop rockers from the Sunshine State with their band Official Hot Mess. And with a new Vh1 reality show on the horizon, they’ll be household names before the year’s done.
Lindsey and her younger sister Kristy were a delight from the start. Even over the phone and over 2500 miles apart, you could sense their relationship was like that of any normal siblings; incessantly talking over one another every other question, they assured normalcy was their biggest trait. I wouldn’t have guessed it though. Growing up with two parents in the spotlight made me assume the Landers were just another pair of rich kids. Not the case admitted Kristy, “Our parents raised us to work hard for everything we have.” Their mom, 80's screen star, Judy Landers and father, MLB player Tom Niedenfuer moved them as far as possible away from the glitz and glamor . This landed the Landers in Sarasota, FL and in a private school.
Growing up the polar opposite of Paris Hilton did them good. I mean they missed out on all the wonders like having a sex tape, dating a Backstreet Boy (which is what I would’ve strived for) and landing in rehab. However, I don’t think the Harry Potter nerds minded at all. Instead they got to be like you and me; watching Saved By The Bell and playing good ol’ high school sports. Their dad always wanted to be that typical sports dad, and got to be when both sisters took on Volleyball and Kristy joined a youth circus? “I don’t think having a trapeze daughter was what he had in mind,” joked Kristy.
While their parents wanted them to stay out of the limelight, you know kids…they don’t always take the parental advice. Never growing up around Hollywood, it was a culture shock coming to LA. They recalled the first time they played at the Playboy Mansion, “Our band was excited. There were literally naked girls running around. You know how they say to picture the audience naked? Well, we couldn’t do that! And then there’s like Verne Troyer just sitting there eating soup.”
High profile performances and some acting under their belts, it’s onward and upward for their careers. Their single “Welcome 2 LA” is fun, catchy pop backed by rock. This makes a lot of sense seeing as their influences garner from the best chick rock the 80’s had to offer; The GoGos, Blondie, Heart and Pat Benetar.
Music videos may be a dying art, but Official Hot Mess offer one to note. “Welcome 2 LA’s” video will catch audiences’ attentions’ with two faces we’ve all grown to love or hate over the years; Peter Brady’s wife and original Top Model, Adrianne Curry and Public Enemy, Flavor of Love’s Flava Flav. Since the Landers are set to have their own reality show on Vh1, it seemed the alumni involvement was a passing of the torch. Not the case, Lindsey said they met the two at charity events and both loved “Welcome 2 LA” and were happy to be in the video.
Whatever the case, the Landers are set to start taping their reality show in August. I’d like to take a second to personally wish and pray this show can help revive the Vh1's reality that’s been dead, in my opinion, since the Megan Hearts a Millionaire scandal. But why are Americans obsessed with reality TV, from Guido’s to little people? Lindsey believes, “People want to be able to relate and it gives them an inside look into a different world than their own.” However, while people like the Kardashians rely solely on reality, the Landers weren’t fishing for a show. They’re just grateful and looking forward to it being a fun opportunity to give people an honest, inside look into their lives.
Will the Landers and the rest of Official Hot Mess be as scandalous and drama ridden as The Hills? I hope not. But with these sisters being tall, blonde and unlike the Hiltons, talented…I’m sure boy drama will be on the forefront. Lindsey had to somewhat disagree, “We have such a hectic schedule right now but if we do go on dates or meet a guy, we won’t hide it.” And for Kristy? If Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe is reading, she’s loved you since she was a mere 11 year old.
No one wants to spend their entire Saturday on the phone, so my time with the Lander sisters had to come to an end. We hung up and went back to our lives. So whether they’re living out many men’s fantasies at the Playboy Mansion, swooning over Harry Potter or living their dreams, you can keep tabs on anything and everything Official Hot Mess over at their MySpace and through Twitter, and look out for their new reality show set to hit Vh1 later this year. - CWG Magazine

In Their Words: "'Money Makes the Girl$ Go Round' is a sassy and playful party song that we wrote with an underlying contemporary and ironic twist on the classic phrase from 'Cabaret.' "Interview Official Hot Mess — "Hannah Montana stole Spiderman's thunder…""

nterview: Official Hot Mess — "Hannah Montana stole Spiderman's thunder…"
Official Hot Mess might just have the last laugh when all is said and done.

The Florida duo of Lindsey and Kristy infuse a wily wit into pop rock anthems like their latest single, "Welcome 2 LA." The track snaps from a sunny melody into a sharply smart refrain that's as catchy as it as calculated. A sly double entendre can sneak into a danceable groove, and that makes Official Hot Mess officially deeper than most of their peers in the pop landscape. Think The Bengals or Blondie with a little dose of Sarah Silverman-style sarcasm and you've got Official Hot Mess.

Plus, the video for "Welcome 2 LA" has Flavor Flav, and he just makes everything cooler.

Official Hot Mess—Kristy and Lindsey—sat down with ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino for an exclusive interview about their sound, kicking it at The Playboy Mansion, Harry Potter Land and why Miley Cyrus is like Spiderman.

Is humor important to your sound?

Kristy: I think a lot of people are surprised by the fact that we're more than just typical blonde bimbos. We actually have a sense of musical ability and we incorporate our personalities and sarcastic sense of humor into that.

Lindsey: The sarcasm and a little bit of humor intrinsically comes with Official Hot Mess. Look at our name [Laughs].

That will draw people to the songs.

Kristy: Our music shows our take on the industry. Everybody's so serious and cynical right now. They're constantly trying to bring you down. If you want to make it, you might as well go out there and be yourself because there's no point in trying to be someone you're not.

Lindsey: A definite element of our music is a poppy fun feel that everyone can relate to. A lot of our songs are party songs that are great to let loose too. It's just fun.

What's the story behind "Welcome 2 LA?"

Kristy: The major inspiration for "Welcome 2 LA" derives from the fact that we come from a small beach town in Florida. It's such a culture shock coming to L.A. and seeing all of the crazy things that are happening.

Lindsey: We get booked to play at the Playboy Mansion, and we're from this sleepy beach town in Florida [Laughs]. When you get to the Playboy Mansion, everybody's naked and they all have big fake boobs and you're like, "What the heck is going on?"

When did you play the Playboy Mansion?

Lindsey: We've played a couple times! We played at Halloween, Super Bowl Sunday and Stars and Stripes.

Kristy: I think it's really funny because everybody always says if you're nervous during a show to picture the audience naked. Well, you can't really do that there because everyone actually is naked [Laughs]. What are you supposed to picture them with their clothes on?

Did you meet a bunch of crazy celebrities after playing?

Kristy: It was really fun for us! We made friends with Verne Troyer, and Hugh Hefner is a really good friend of ours. He's been so supportive of our music, and we've been really luck for that.

Lindsey: The first time we played there, we met Adrienne Curry who ended up guest-starring in our video "Welcome 2 LA."

Kristy: She heard us play the song, and she was really into it. She loved the sarcastic flavor to it, and she wanted to be in the video so she smoked weed and played Guitar Hero [Laughs].

How'd you get Flavor Flav in the video?

Kristy: He was at another charity event we played at. We made him friends with him there, talked to him about the video and played him the song. He was really into the idea of setting a big house party at his L.A. mansion.

Lindsey: Flav's party!

Kristy: That was it!

So that was his house?

Kristy: No, but it'd be cool if it was [Laughs].

There weren't enough clocks.

Lindsey: Very true.

Does that clock around his neck have the right time on it?

Lindsey: Absolutely! [Laughs] You've got to see his keychain though…

Kristy: He's got like 500 keys on it. I don't know what they go to!

Lindsey: He's one of the nicest people I've ever met.

Kristy: He's also very deep. It was awesome. He's genuinely a kind-hearted person. It's nice when you find the rare people like that in this town.

What's up with "Crashing Down?"

Kristy: That's one of my favorite songs. It actually got a really good placement in MTV's Whitney On The City. It's like the perfect break-up song, it's so depressing but it fits so well in the show.

If your album were a movie, what would it be?

Kristy: I'd say Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets Legally Blonde.

Lindsey: Sex and the City!

Kristy: Sex and the City, no way! It's got the fun, sweet side from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and all of the cool exciting noises and pretty things to look at. Then you've got the blondes who actually turn out to be smart like Legally Blonde in the end. I was going to say Harry Potter, but I couldn't think of anything to tie in [Laughs].

Well Official Hot Mess is magical, and Harry Potter is too.

Kristy: Exactly! We went to Harry Potter Land last week.

How was it?

Kristy: Epic!

Lindsey: Unbelievable!

Kristy: We went before it opened. It was pretty awesome! Hogwart's is fully there. You can ride virtual broomsticks. It's 3-D and all of these crazy things jump out at you! We're huge nerds so comic books and Harry Potter are awesome!

What are some of your favorite comic books?

Kristy: Spiderman—he's just the best hero because you don't expect it.

Lindsey: He's just a regular person who gets superpowers.

Kristy: If you think about it, Hannah Montana completely stole Spiderman's thunder. He's the normal guy who turns out to be super.

What's so super about Hannah Montana?

Kristy: She's a normal girl, but she puts on her wig and then she's a superstar. She ripped off Spiderman [Laughs].

Lindsey: That darn Miley Cyrus…

"Official Hot Mess -- About to Pop"

Who: Official Hot Mess
Video: 'Welcome 2 L.A.'
Hails From: Florida
For Fans Of: Ke$ha, the Veronicas

Why They're About to Pop: Sisters Kristy and Lindsey, the frontwomen of pop rockers Official Hot Mess, learned piano by ear at age four, wrote their first original tune at 13 and landed their first record deal before graduating high school. Since then, they've sold tons of records in Asia, Australia and parts of Europe and played shows with the likes of the Bangles, We the Kings and Mitchel Musso. Now, they've released a spunky new single, 'Welcome 2 L.A.,' with a video featuring Adrianne Curry and Flavor Flav.

"The major inspiration for 'Welcome 2 L.A.' derives from the fact that we come from a small beach town in Florida," Kristy tells PopEater. "It's a culture shock coming to L.A. and seeing all of the crazy things that are happening." But that doesn't mean that the girls haven't pursued a bit of mischief, as well.

"We've definitely gotten into our fair share of trouble, from accidentally starting a bus brawl to narrowly avoiding arrest for skinny dipping in a pool after hours," Lindsey admits. Kristy adds, "We got chased by a wizard on Hollywood Blvd., and we accidentally sat in Bill Murray's seats at his own movie premiere."

Watch the 'Welcome 2 L.A.' video below, and read our exclusive interview with the duo to find out how they got started in music, what it's like to perform at the Playboy mansion and what they'd say to the high school classmates who once taunted them.
Seven Questions With Official Hot Mess:

What inspired the two of you to start playing music and who are your influences?

Kristy: Although we were born in Los Angeles, when we were little kids, our parents moved us as far away from Hollywood as we could get, and sent us to a school for the "academically gifted" to keep us away from the entertainment industry. That worked well ... not!

Lindsey: We began creating music for enjoyment and wrote our first song when we were really little kids and haven't stopped writing and creating music since. During high school, we put our music on the Internet and got offered a deal with a record label in Asia. That album became really successful and we even got to tour Asia!

Kristy: Most of our songs are pop with an underlying rock feel, which comes from being influenced by artists like Blondie, Heart, Cyndi Lauper, the Bangles, Pat Benatar and the Go-Go's. However, instead of specifically emulating any other artist, our goal is to create our own path for other artists in years to come to follow.

Lindsey: We're influenced by rock, alternative, hip-hop, etc., and bring aspects of each genre into our personal style.

How did you come up the the name Official Hot Mess?

Kristy: We call ourselves Official Hot Mess because it seems as though mischief and trouble always have a way of finding us!

Lindsey: Like the time we thought we were on a flight to L.A. and ended up in Puerto Rico.

Kristy: Or the time my spike heel got caught on Lindsey's pants and I accidentally pantsed her onstage!

Lindsey: Official Hot Mess is a spot-on description of the chaos and craziness that ensues when us and the four wild and crazy guys in our band hit the road.

How would you describe your sound and style?

Kristy: I think a lot of people are surprised by the fact that we're more than just typical blonde bimbos. We actually have a sense of musical ability and we incorporate our personalities and sarcastic sense of humor into that.

Lindsey: A definite element of our music is a poppy, fun feel that's very relatable. A lot of our songs are party songs that are great to let loose to. It's fun.

Kristy: Some of our songs reveal our take on the industry. Everybody's so serious and cynical right now. They're constantly trying to bring you down. If you want to make it, you might as well go out there and be yourself because there's no point in trying to be someone you're not.

Working so closely together, is there ever any sibling rivalry?

Kristy: There really isn't rivalry between us because we consider ourselves a team.

Lindsey: Being in a band together has brought us closer, but also gives us more topics that are open for debate, which potentially leads to conflict over minute artistic differences.

Kristy: We always resolve our differences and come to a mutual consensus together as a team.

What's the story behind the 'Welcome 2 L.A.' video, and how did the guest appearances (Flavor Flav, Adrianne Curry) come about?

Kristy: We met Adrianne Curry and Flavor Flav at charity events. We played Adrianne the song and she was really into it. She loved the sarcastic flavor to it. And we loved her idea for her to be smoking weed and playing 'Guitar Hero' in our video! She's such a fun person.

Lindsey: When we talked to Flav about the video and played him the song, he loved the idea of 'Welcome 2 L.A.' being set at Flavor Flav's house party!

What was the craziest moment you had while playing shows at the Playboy mansion?

Kristy: It's really funny because everybody always says if you're nervous during a show to picture the audience naked. Well, you can't really do that there because most everyone actually is naked. What, are you supposed to picture them with their clothes on?

Lindsey: One of the funniest things that happened at the mansion was on Halloween, when we had the guys in our band dress up as Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake's 'SNL' skit, 'D--- in a Box.' One of them accidentally bumped Hugh Hefner's butt with his box!

Kristy: Also, when Ron Jeremy continuously came into our dressing room asking us if he could "rent this space for his kissing room."

What would you say now to the classmates who taunted you back in high school when you were developing your career?

Lindsey: High school was a difficult time for us, especially because the school we went to was a public school for "academically gifted students" and we were thought of as rebels and outcasts for pursuing music.

Kristy: While all the other kids were focusing on SAT scores and Ivy League schools, we were touring in Japan and barely keeping our grades up.

Lindsey: Even now, high school's not far behind us, but bygones are bygones and we've learned a lot and grown from those experiences, bad and good.

Kristy: However, we'd like to dedicate track eight from Lily Allen's 'It's Not Me It's You' album to them. - AOL Popeater

You know it’s an Official Hot Mess when Flava Flav AND Top Model Adrianne Curry are in on the act in “Welcome 2 LA.” - MTVU

"New Video: Official Hot Mess, 'Welcome 2 LA""

Credit to Official Hot Mess; Upon viewing the reality TV-crazed pop-culture landscape, the new-ish band fronted by just-outta-high-school gals Kristy and Lindsey Landers decided to say, "If you can't beat 'em, invite 'em to join you in a music video."

Here we have "Welcome 2 LA," a new single off the band's self-titled album from last fall. It's a song about the boulevards of broken dreams that line the City of Angels, and the folks who pour into that town, looking to make it as a star.

The action is set at a Hollywood Hills mansion full of wannabe stars, hanging out with reality icons such as Public Enemy (and "Flavor of Love" star) Flavor Flav and "America's Next Top Model" winner (and "The Surreal Life" veteran Adrianne Curry.

It's a spunky pop-rock number that doesn't take itself too seriously. Check out the video below - MTV BuzzWorthy

Bio

Aspiring to nothing more than a good, old-fashioned rock & roll party, Official Hot Mess won considerable media attention and a cult following after scoring their first record deal before even graduating high school. O.H.M seems unstoppable as they keep evoking people’s amazement since the fantastic outcome of their debut album, which went to the top of the charts throughout Asia and Australia. “With their four-piece male band in tow, this dynamic duo is circum-navigating the music world with a young and sassy vibe, and some very catchy songs.” .

The pop/rock band delivers captivating melodies, enchanting harmonies, and controversial lyrics… “Think The Bangles or Blondie with a little dose of Sarah Silverman-style sarcasm and you've got Official Hot Mess” … which lead to their current, original music being featured on MTV’s “The Hills”, “The City”, “My Super Sweet 16”,“The Jersey Shore”, “The Real World”, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” and multiple Nickelodeon shows, to name a few. “Their clever lyrical twists and dance-fused melodies have given them a well-deserved edge over many of their pop/rock contemporaries”

Kristy and Lindsey, the front women of O.H.M, are two fun loving sisters aspiring to make the music they love, and
enjoy the crazy ride together; yet they also strive to create their own musical identity for other artists in years to come to follow. This goal might seem lofty, but consider the artist: the girls, who at age 4, learned piano by ear, and performed the first song they ever wrote on PBS. By age 13, they had written their first original pop/rock song. At 14, they formed their first band and played venues across Florida. They managed to overcome the taunts and jeers of their classmates (at their public high school for the academically gifted), who couldn’t see past SAT Scores and Ivy League entrance exams. Hence, their bratty high school delinquent image--which is clearly indebted as their songs concern themselves with mostly boys, parties, their perception of the superficial LA lifestyle, and the over dramatic antics of the “popular girls”.

MTV and MTVU premiered Official Hot Mess' music video for their song, "Welcome 2 LA" -- “Official Hot Mess infuses a wily wit into pop rock anthems like their latest single, "Welcome 2 LA. The track snaps from a sunny melody into a sharply smart refrain that's as catchy as it as calculated. A sly double entendre can sneak into a danceable groove, and that makes Official Hot Mess officially deeper than most of their peers in the pop landscape” . The highly acclaimed video reached the No. 2 spot on MTVU, and featured cameo appearances by Flavor Flav and America's Top Model winner Adrianne Curry. It is currently airing on Fuse and will be featured on E! News. The music video has been featured in Youtube’s "Rising Videos". They have performed on Fox News, CNN’s "The Morning Show", "Good Day Atlanta", and the nationally syndicated CW television show, “The Daily Buzz”.

Official Hot Mess has shared the stage with The Bangles, Disney Channel's Mitchell Musso, We The Kings, Plies, Kevin Rudolf, Bubba Sparxxx and Ja Rule to name a few. They played the Halloween Extravaganza at the Playboy Mansion and Superbowl Sunday at the Playboy mansion. O.H.M co-headlined with Lil’ Kim at Stars and Stripes 2010 (a charity event benefiting The Wounded Warrior Project) and are performing at the Annual Wicked Night Event alongside Kevin Rudolf and Ice Cube (an event to benefit the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation)

The multi-talented singer-songwriters have a flair for theatrics with a budding career in film and television as well. With roles in upcoming feature films costarring with Andy Dick and Amy Smart “And with a new Vh1 reality show on the horizon, they’ll be household names before the year’s done” .

Official Hot Mess has been selected as Clear Channel Radio and I Heart Radio’s (incl. stations such as Z100, KISS FM, and Y100) “NEW! Artist to Watch” and “NEW! Recommended Artist” of the month. Their new single, “Money Makes the Girl$ Go Round” just premiered on AOL Music and AOL Radio, and has been added to the rotation of “New Pop First”.

O.H.M is sure to prove their calling card to Hollywood and turn more than a few heads.
