"The Legacy"

"Ian Campbell is one of our favorite performers...One of the most memorable events was the performance that Ian gave on Flag Day. We were moved to tears at Ian’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner!"

“Ian sounds like a young Frank Sinatra-Tony Bennett, but with a modern twist. We just love the way he sings!”

“When Ian is entertaining, everyone listening has a smile on their face!” - Legacy at Willow Pond

Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Ian Campbell is a singer/ songwriter blessed with a passionate, smooth voice and the natural gift of bringing life to the stories in his songs. Like so many who came before, Campbell has absorbed the soul of musicians from the big band era of the 20s and beyond to create something truly captivating and dynamic.

Ian’s musical education began when he was almost fresh out of the womb. “My parents still tell me stories about how I used to annoy them when I was a kid with all of my singing,” Campbell says. “It seems like they tell my friends every time they see them that I would ‘sing so much that we had to ask him to stop!’ (their words not mine). But I always knew that it was what I wanted to do.”
Ian’s exposure to the great musicians of the big band era came via his granddaddy’s musical passion and his dad’s love for old movies. “My granddaddy always told me that he had ‘true tone.’ And I had absolutely no idea what he meant, but he loved to sing along with me when I’d practice, so I just went with it.”

His exposure to classic rock also came from his dad, “At first I thought the stuff that he listened to sucked, but then I started hearing bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Who, and I was hooked.
“My mom had a lot of influence on my musical taste, too, introducing me to artists like Michael Jackson, folk acts like Peter, Paul and Mary and classical piano music. To this day, Moonlight Sonata is one of my favorite pieces of music.” Campbell continues, “But she was the one who really showed me how a piece of music, whether words were associated with it or not, can instill some very strong emotions and tell a very real story.”
While Ian was always singing, that wasn’t where he focused his musical talents initially. “At first, I wanted to play the drums,” he recalls, “so I started out taking drum lessons, but when I realized that I had to start out on a practice pad and not a drum set, I was a little disappointed,” so he picked up his mom’s guitar and taught himself how to play. “That’s when I realized that it’s a lot easier to write a song and sing it with a guitar than with a set of drums.”
A truly captivating live performer, Campbell has performed with acts such as Rochester-based Nik and the Nice Guys, the Rochester Rat Pack, and his own band, Remedy.
But for the Denver-based musician all that really matters is that he is able to play his music.

“Leaving Rochester was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but I think it was the right move in the long run. I’ll never be able to replace Chris and Rob [bass player and drummer for Remedy], nor would I ever want to. They’re two of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with, and I’m sure we’ll find a way to work together in the future, but for now, I’m just looking forward to playing.”
