"10 Questions With Alexis Thompson"

Alexis Thompson is a talented and ambitious young artist based in the Nashville area. When I first came across her music, I was struck by her creativity and uniqueness. She was also gracious enough to consent to an interview on The East Bank.

- The East Bank (Nashville, TN)

"Oh, Alexis! on Soundclick"

"Alexis Thompson sings alt-country-folk with a pleasingly plaintive voice. Sincerity glows from every note. And her songwriting impresses, as well. Be sure to listen to the bluesy "Strugglin'." "Some of Us Are Crazy" and "Stupid Cowboy" stand out among the other winners on her SoundClick Web page." - Palo Alto Daily News

"Oh, Alexis!... Strugglin'"

"I love and adore "Strugglin'." (Shades of the incomparable Kelly Willis.) Alexis Thompson has a fabulous voice and, judging from the other tunes, an affection for Patty Griffin's "Living With Ghosts." "Strugglin'" is one of the best songs I've heard lately. This girl has the goods. Hopefully, she'll build forward towards more gems. (Like Patty Griffin going from "Living With Ghosts," to "1,000 Kisses," giving us the amazing "Rain.") --Lanny Grant - Blah-g, Blah-g, Blah-g

"S.S. Pop Grass"

"In this wide ocean of contemporary music, filled with flash and lure “hey-me”-noise  and in-your-face beats of restless rhythms, there floats a small but shining and steady seaworthy scooner called the SS Popgrass.  Captained by the crystal clear voice of Alexis Thompson.  She sails her soulful songs through the glitz and glamour, past the wailing clamor, directly, and surely to the port of your heart.  It is a refreshing and inclusive kind of listening." - Buster Storm

"Alexis Thompson, The Velvet Underground, and Populism"

"Without delving into an essay on the stylistic quirks in Americana, Alexis Thompson has found a style that's just outside of Nashville's conventional wisdom." - Stereo Zeitgeist

Bio

Although Alexis Thompson is just 24 years old, she has been a veteran of the stage for nearly two decades. A native of Punxsutawney, PA, she performed at numerous fairs, competitions and sporting events across Western Pennsylvania as she grew up. After graduating from high school, her small hometown could no longer contain her ambitions for a career in the music industry, so she moved to the Nashville area to pursue her dreams.

Alexis has written hundreds of original songs and self-produced three albums: Some of Us are Crazy (2005), I Hate money (2007) and Reasons & Ways (2008). Living in the Nashville area for the past five years has given Alexis the opportunity to collaborate with a number of talented artists and hone her unique sound. With diverse influences such as Loretta Lynn, Simon and Garfunkel, Dwight Yoakum, The Velvet Underground and Dolly Parton, Alexis' music has a country/folk feel without conforming to traditional stereotypes. She recently broadened her musical horizons by recording a duet with Nashville-based punk/rock band The Blacklist Royals.

In addition to singing and writing her own music, Alexis plays the guitar, banjo, drums, keyboard and bass. She also plays mandolin in the folk trio The Junkyard Hearts. In addition to her musical talents, Alexis is a printmaking major at Middle Tennessee State University and designed the artwork for the Reasons & Ways album jacket.

Alexis is a member of Nashville Songwriters Association International and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. You can learn more about Alexis and hear some of her music at www.OhAlexis.com.
