"POPFEST Highlights, Part 2: Oh Sanders and Venice is Sinking"

Gainesville's Oh Sanders, led by Stella Leung, is another one of those bands which people were still talking about days into the festival, as though trying to mentally create a bookmark--this is one we shouldn't forget. Which is always nice to see; this was a festival where people were talking more about the discoveries than the headliners (well, OK, a lot of people were talking about Daniel Johnston, but you see my point). Oh Sanders specializes in addictive tunes and observant songwriting--listen to "Pirate Ship," on their MySpace page, for as complete a portrait of narcissism as you'll ever hear, but one you might almost tune out if you start dancing to the dazzling melody. Imagine the Cranberries fronted by Chrissie Hynde. "The State of Disorder," which you can hear below is the band at its best, a strident, gorgeous march that happily sticks in your skull.

Bio

Oh Sanders is a five piece band that hails from Gainesville, Florida. As pop-influenced kids living in a mostly punk rock town, they have managed to carve out their own little music niche. Musically, Oh Sanders incorporates twee-influenced melodies with bold, striding, overdrive-laden lead guitar and synth lines. As the main lyricist, Stella has a tendency to create contrast with these happy hooks, when you realize that under the grooving instrumentals, the song's lyrics are thinly veiled and passing commentary about... well, you! Oh Sanders takes pride in creating these awkward situations.

Following the release of their first album ["Manic Phase EP"], the band has been taking their lively stage show on the road, with further touring planned for Spring and Summer 2008. All focus for the new year is currently on finishing a full length LP [still untitled] with an estimated release date of January 2008. Sample tracks from the album can be heard both here on Sonicbids and on their myspace page: www.myspace.com/ohsanders
