Bio

A Philadelphia native, Ohsha Kai was raised in a home filled with music and a lot of love. In the 1970's her mother had been a member of The Russell Singers, and Ohsha yearned to follow in her footsteps. Her family, however, wanted anything but a life in the spotlight for their favorite daughter.

It wasn't until they saw Ohsha's determination and talent that they finally relented. At only 13 years old, she surprised everyone by forming her own girl group and performing "Be My Baby" at a family reunion. "It certainly cured me of my stage fright and proved to them that I could sing!" says Ohsha.

Trying to find her way in the world, Ohsha went to New York City and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She found it difficult to concentrate on studies, as finding her niche as an artist was always on her mind. An unexpected night out at a dance club gave her direction: "the moment I first heard house music, I knew I was in love!"

She tried her hand at acting, but the grind of auditions and living life as a starving artist in New York City began to take its toll. Ohsha finally decided to return to her Philadelphia roots to work professionally as a backup singer for several R&B and Hip Hop artists. Not wanting to be pigeonholed in only Urban music, she signed-up for one last audition.

"I promised myself that entering the Philly Idol Contest would be my very last singing audition—period! I was fed up with being stuck turning my wheels musically!"
It was on a hot August night that Ron Hirsch, owner of Act 2 Records, discovered Ohsha when she won Philly Idol. He signed her to a record deal on the spot.

Influenced by gospel greats such as Andre Crouch, Vicky Winans and Shirley Ceasar, Ohsha found the soulful riffs, heartfelt melodies and the passionate, powerhouse vocals of dance music to be the perfect fit. She was ready to release her first record.

Written and produced by Josh Harris, "Free Your Mind" was the #1 Breakout Song of the week in July of 2006 and spent a total of 15 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Dance Club Play Chart. It rose to become a Top 10 hit and held the #6 position—bested only by established, major-label stars.

Cutting through thousands of tracks released, "Free Your Mind" rose to iTunes' Top Ten List (Dance) and was on the Recording Academy's Final Nominating Ballot—up for a GRAMMY nomination as "Best Dance Recording." It also hit Top 10 on the WORLD Dance/Trance charts (US, Germany, UK, Australia, Japan and Italy). Radio airplay across the U.S. followed, and Ohsha's song hit #3 on Sirius Satellite Radio's OUTQ Top 20 Chart.

Ohsha's sophomore single also reached Top 10 on Billboard Dance Chart and iTunes Top 10 list (Dance/Electronic)

Now with her 3rd, 4th, and 5th single due to release in fall '08, Ohsha is now poised to take the POP/R&B world by storm!
