"Oh So Quiet"

I can’t be the only person for whom the phrase “Oh So Quiet” conjures up images of Bjork dancing exuberantly around the streets, but it is also the name of a musical duo, originally from Argentina – now based in Surrey – who make intimate, pretty, acoustic songs that twinkle gently and slowly flow into something quite majestic.

Oh So Quiet‘s eponymous debut EP showcases a nuanced understanding of starry-eyed folky songs with romantic, lullaby lyrics and intricate guitars that build up into soaring crescendos and there’s something quite nicely slow-burning about it all – think long instrumentals that aren’t rushing to get to the next chorus. ’Rain At Night’ is the single and for me the stand-out track. Maybe I’m going to overuse the word “pretty” in this write-up but I think that kind of sums it up. That wholesome, naturalistic, tender way that the song – and, indeed, the whole EP – washes over you, is sort of wonderful. It’s got that earthy, Latin-y warmth of early Devendra, if with more in the way of instrumentation and male and female vocal harmonies – perhaps reminiscent too of some of the more stripped back early Arcade Fire songs.

Lovely night time listening, the ‘Oh So Quiet’ EP is a nice little release for those into their pretty alt-folk.

The EP is out on Monday 29th April on Cool For Cats Records, and you can stream it here. - Don't Watch Me Dancing

"Fresh Faves: Batch 55"

You wouldn’t neccessarily expect a multinational group of musicians like Lucas and Malena Zavala, Axel Martinez, Silvija Vil and Martin Gregoire to name themselves after a 1951 song by US chantese Betty Hutton and famously covered by Björk. Nor would you expect them making alternative acoustic roots music from a bedroom in leafy Guildford. Yet, as their Facebook biog tells us “Formado en 2011, Oh So Quiet están listo para lanzar un EP de debut y comenzar su carrera como grupo folklorico alternative multinacional.” Release of their debut EP is planned for this spring and their next gig is at Surya in London on April 20th. Rewarding though it is to listen to this song on Soundcloud, the best way to enjoy it is via their charming video on YouTube shot – yes – in that Guildford bedroom. Or is it? - Fresh On The Net - Writer: Tom Robinson

"Oh So Quiet - New Music "Introducing""

Another discovery thanks to a gig I couldn't go to, London based quintet Oh So Quiet played at The Old Queen's Head on Easter Sunday, about the time I was tucking into a family roast dinner no doubt. It's impossible for me to get to every gig I'd like to with a family and other commitments (including training for a marathon, which according to my running diary - as geeky as it sounds - accounted for some 25 hours in March alone), so and my Easter turned into four family / off days and not quite the all-day music events I'd of liked to have attended, though saying that, I quite enjoyed myself nonetheless.

Anyway, music, Oh So Quiet started as the brother / sister duo of Lucas and Malena Zavala who moved to the UK from Argentina as children and started the band in 2011, adding three multi-national members along the way, their debut self-titled EP is due as a digital download via Cool For Cats Records on April 29th and for now we've got the lead track "Rain at Night" to listen to. Simply put, it is heavenly. Malena leads the song with a vocal as soft and pure as whatever your finest pleasure may be, backed initially by a sparse acoustic guitar the track blossoms amongst subtle musicality with divine harmonies and increasingly radiant instrumentation to become a truly warm and affectionate number that gets better with every listen.

"Water's Fall" is another track that will be on the EP, an early demo version (and a live video) of the track is enough to decide it's another winner, calming and soothing it's the sound of falling in love in slow motion, reflective and introspective amongst subtle rolling percussion and falsetto echoes reminiscent of the depth, beauty and magnificence of Farao / Like Spinning, Bon Iver and the like.

There's more stunning videos to be found on YouTube (and some demo tracks on Soundcloud) that I could equally add my superlatives too, head here or here if you can't get enough of the couple I've added below. Quite magnificent. - Just the Music I like - Writer: Leigh Ecclestone

"Listen Up! Oh So Quiet - Debut S/T EP: "Motorcycle Journey" / "Walls So High""

Electro-pop and glitchy stuff has been heavily featured on this site over the past few months, it's just what we're into at the moment. But every now and then something a little outside that box comes along and surprises everyone, and it ends up in our hearts and on the front page! Oh So Quiet's new S/T debut EP is worthy of both and really deserves some quite time for reflection. It's soft and beautiful, and the artwork you see above kinda tells you everything you need to know. It's music for nighttime, for snowfalls, for grey skies, for ... loving.

Try our favorite cuts from the EP below and stream the full release HERE (Soundcloud) or HERE (Bandcamp). You won't regret it. "Walls So High" is sublime! - A media Mindset

"Oh So Quiet - Oh So Quiet EP"

Oh So Quiet is a Guildford based band made up of Argetine duo Lucas and Malena Zavala. They will be releasing thier brilliant self titled debut EP on April 29th. The Oh So Quiet EP features a mix of Folk, Indie Rock and Pop which they refer to as Alternative Folk. The genre is the least important thing here, the quality of the music is high even more so because it's Oh So Quiet's first release! If you only listen to one thing today, then make sure it's this. You can watch two acoustic performances of "Rain at Night" and "Oh So Quiet" from the EP below. - Best In New Music

"Monday Music – 3 June 2013"

Oh So Quiet – Rain At Night

Oh So Quiet are a pair of Argentinian folksters based in Guildford, of all things; this track comes from their eponymous debut EP. It’s generous, warm and wistful, and as trustworthy as an old friend; and it’s so increasingly, almost agonisingly pretty that I actually shake. - Some of it was true! - Writer: Richard Mellor

"Recommended Album: Oh So Quiet - Oh So Quiet EP"

Earlier this week I was sent a link to the debut album of UK-by-way-of-Argentina group Oh So Quiet – which is available for streaming right now – and quietly tucked it away for posting as the Recommended Album this week. But it wasn’t until today that I came across a live performance video of my favorite track from the album “Rain At Night”. And this video Melts. My. Heart.

Lead singer Malena‘s vocals are flawless and have an silky fluidity underlined with a hint of an accent that gives away her Argentinian roots. Throughout the album are hints of the native influences of both Malena and fellow band member Lucas but rather than constructing songs with blocks taken from both cultures Oh So Quiet blends them seamlessly. A clear example of this in the opening of the video below as the guitar plays what I initially recognized as a very South American picking pattern but then throws in hammer-ons that are very much of Western folk music.

After moving to England Malena and Lucas collected a group of musicians who through some means or another had also migrated to that part of the world and have constructed some of the most comforting, tender music I’ve come across in a long time. I’d almost go so far as to call it maternal. But do not misunderstand me, it is not fluff by any measure. There is an understated complexity to it that reinforces my fondness of it with every listen.

At any scale you choose to measure it, this EP is solid. And as a first release it’s more than promising of good things to come. The EP is streaming now and will be available for purchase on April 29th. If you happen to live in London be sure to make it out to their release show at Bar Tipsy on May 2nd - Mouser - Writer: Honey Bear

Bio

Oh So Quiet was formed in 2011 by duo Lucas and Malena Zavala. Originally from Argentina, they grew up in a very creative environment with a family full of architects, fine artists and musicians. At the age of 7 and 3, their parents decided to move to England.
In Early 2011, they gathered members from other parts of the world to complete the live band and develop an alternative folk sound, combining indigenous Latin-American music with western world indie and folk.
