What is your job?

I am a recording engineer, and own my own recording studio, Empire State Recording Company in Bushwick, Brooklyn. I also sing for the NYHC band, Olde York.

What social causes are most important to you?

I guess animal shelters would be what I am connected to. Unlike people, animals have absolutely no choice or active say about how they are treated, and have zero options when they are treated poorly. So its up to us to speak and act for them. That isn’t to say that there aren’t people and human causes that are worthy of our help, of course there are, but animals truly are innocents.
What charitiy/ies do you support – and how?

Both Olde York, and my old band BiG MiSTAKE have done a lot of benefit shows that support various causes, one that is really important to me that Olde York has done a few shows for is the Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn. Another really good one, my friend Eric in CT runs is called To Hell and Back Pitbull Rescue.
Personally, I also support The North Shore Animal League. My dog Luna came from them, and I always go to them for vet appointments and meds for her and such cause even though it’s an hour away from where I live, all the profits they make go to helping more animals. All of these shelters are no-kill shelters too, which is important.

We also have done shows where people get a dollar off the door fee if they bring a canned good that gets donated to a local soup kitchen, or around Christmas, have people bring a small toy to donate to Toys For Tots for reduced admission.

We were also involved in Operation: United Forces Hardcore. They are a group that put out a compilation that Olde York and a bunch of other hardcore bands like Son of Skam, Caught In A Trap, Reason Enough, and Razorblade Handgrenade are on and sent them free to any of the troops over in Iraq that signed up and wanted to get one. I don’t care what your politics are or how you feel about the war in Iraq, I think everyone would pretty much agree that regardless of why they are there, the troops that are over there deserve our support cause they certainly didn’t ask to leave their families and go over there, and this was a nice, if small way of saying thanks to them for sacrificing so much. Incidentally, we played a show down in Delaware not long ago, and we met a guy who had been over there and received the disc, and he said that it was really cool that they were able to do that for them, and actually that is where he first heard our band. It was just nice to see it actually work, you know? If you go on their MySpace page and see some of the letters they have received from guys that are over there, it makes me really proud to have been involved in the project, even in just a small way.
Why do you have a passion for these in particular, is there a personal tie?

I am vegetarian and follow a Buddhist philosophy of life. As I said before, I feel that animals are true innocents that are not in anyway responsible for the wrong doing thrust upon them, so for my own conscience, if I can help minimize their suffering, then that is something I should do.

Is there a particular way you would want to encourage readers to be involved?

Yes, if you are thinking of getting a dog or a cat, then get a rescued animal. And definitely consider getting an older animal, not just a puppy, because the older an animal is the less chance it has of getting adopted. The more people that are willing to adopt a dog or cat from a shelter, makes that much more space for other animals to get rescued, because unfortunately, they don’t have unlimited resources or space. Also if you have a dog or cat, get it spayed or neutered. Even if you don’t let your pet out of doors, you never know what might happen, they could accidentally get out, and they will be happier and better behaved anyway.
And of course give money. Any of these places will be more then happy to accept a charitable donation!


How would you define social responsibility?

Doing your part and taking responsibility for what goes on in your community.
It doesn’t have to be huge, in fact I think a lot of us do stuff everyday without realizing it.
Ever stopped to pick up some trash that someone left on your block? Or kept an eye out if you see a stranger poking around your neighbor’s house while they were away? Just making some kind of effort to say “Hey I’m a part of this, and I know that things won’t get better without me being involved.”
We are supposed to be looking out for each other, nobody else is going to, its up to us.

OLDE YORK
Gli Olde York sono una giovane band che arriva dalle stesse strade di New York City che hanno reso famosi gruppi come Agnostic Front, Warzone e Sick Of It All. Durante il loro ultimo ‘Empire State Tour 2010’, abbiamo avuto modo di scambiare quattro chiacchere con Ted e Blake, rispettivamente voce e chitarra degli Olde York! Se siete dei fan dell’hardcore vecchia scuola “Made In NYC” vi troverete sicuramente d’accordo con lo spirito che anima questi ragazzi…let’s go!


SD: Ciao ragazzi,potete raccontare ai nostri lettori innanzitutto com’è cominciata la vostra avventura come gruppo?
OY: Io e Blake ci ritrovammo in questa sorta di karaoke punk dove andiamo di solito.
Io stavo facendo una festa e abbiamo iniziato a fare una jam e ci siamo detti “hey, dovremmo formare una band!” Dopo questa decisione son dovuti passare un paio di anni perchè ci assestassimo come band, abbiamo fatto molti cambiamenti. Stavamo cercando un batterista e poi ci siamo ricordati improvvisamente che il fratello di Blake suona la batteria!
SD: Ora siete in tour in giro per l’Europa…come sta andando? Se doveste fare una sorta di classifica quale paese direste essere il più aperto mentalmente verso l’arte e la musica in generale?
OY:Tutti i paesi sono abbastanza aperti mentalmente…e finora ci siamo divertiti ovunque. Finora siamo stati solo in tre stati e l’Italia è il quarto ma qui non è come negli USA. Mi sembrano tutti molto più aperti anche ai diversi stili di musica per esempio.
SD: Avete pubblicato il vostro album “Empire State” per la Countdown Records. Come avete conosciuto Luca?
OY: Lascio parlare Blake perchè è lui il fautore di tutto.
Blake: Io ero nella band No More Fear e Luca ci conosceva e ci invitò a venire a Vicenza e ad uscire con lui e tutti quelli che conosco qui ora.
SD: Chi ha fatto l’artwork per l’album?
O.Y.(Blake): Mio fratello!


SD: E per quanto riguarda la copertina? L’atmosfera che ispira mi ricorda un sacco il film ‘The Warriors’
OY: A dirla tutta la copertina l’ha fatta un ragazzo di qui proprio. Wais!
Mio fratello ha poi messo tutto insieme e Ted invece si è occupato della registrazione mentre io ho girato il video. Abbiamo fatto tutto DIY dall’inizio alla fine…
SD: Se doveste fare una scelta quali nominereste come le band più influenti per voi e per il vostro sound?
OY: Tutti noi abbiamo differenti gusti in fatto di musica e differenze influenze, ma quelle comuni che possiamo nominare sono Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Murphy’s Law
SD: La canzone ‘Talkin Smack’ vede la partecipazione di Eddie Sutton, il cantante dei Leeway. Come siete giunti a questa collaborazione?


OY: E’ sempre per merito di Blake, gli piace parlare con la gente.
Blake: Sono stato nella scena hardcore di NY per molti anni e ci siamo conosciuti vedendoci agli show così gli ho chiesto se voleva fare la guest star nel nostro album e lui mi ha detto ”certo, per te qualsiasi cosa!”
SD: E per quanto riguarda ‘False Idols’? Penso che il messaggio che volete dare sia abbastanza chiaro ma potete rispiegarlo per chi non conosce questa canzone?
OY: Si parla in pratica della religione, del fatto che le persone si ostinino a credere in qualcosa di superiore che sia pronto ad aiutarli dandogli le risposte quando invece dovresti guardare più dentro di te per trovarle, non aspettare che ti arrivino dal cielo perché se non le trovi dentro di te nient’altro la fuori ti aiuterà.
SD: In un’altra delle vostre canzoni dite che continuate a credere che una scena unita sia possibile. Com’è la situazione da voi? Cosa pensate che dovrebbero fare le band per esempio.
OY: Quando ho iniziato ad andare agli show (sono un po’ più vecchio di tutti loro) non c’era tutta questa distinzione tra band. Andavi ad un concerto e c’erano insieme band punk, hardcore, ska…di tutto e tutto era punk, l’importante era fare qualsiasi cosa venisse in mente. Era interessante e divertente, ora invece i concerti son organizzati con cinque gruppi magari che si assomigliano tutti o che se non altro fanno lo stesso genere musicale e nessuno vuole sorbirsi ore e ore di una stessa cosa, diventa noioso. Ci sono situazioni in cui le persone si presentano solo ed esclusivamente per vedere la band dei loro amici e poi se ne vanno. Non ci dovrebbero più essere distinzioni dentro alla scena…dovremmo essere tutti uniti di nuovo, sarebbe più divertente e sicuramente la gente riprenderebbe ad andare ai concerti.
SD:Ultima domanda…parlando di violenza vi siete proclamati contrari…ci sono molte gang dalle vostre parti o è una cosa passata?
OY: C’è stato un periodo in cui c’erano un paio di crew che in pratica avevano solo voglia di fare casino, ma ora non è più così. Più che altro la cosa assurda è che ai concerti c’è gente che proprio si vede che va li per fare del male. Se vai nel pit sai a cosa vai incontro normalmente, non puoi aspettarti di non farti male, ma l’intento non è quello di fare - Salad Days Magazine
