"A fine balance of simplicity, intensity, smooth harmonies and lyrical honesty."

A fine balance of simplicity, intensity, smooth harmonies and lyrical honesty, Old Man’s Beard are a throwback to the innocence of earlier generations of roots musicians, yet they have wound their bright eyed compositions around the ears of today’s audience. - Hugo Rampen, Artistic Director, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival

"Having Old Man's Beard live in studio confirmed that these folks are the real deal."

We were impressed immediately when we heard the music of Old Man’s Beard. Their musicianship, song writing and harmonies won us over immediately and fit our station beautifully. We’ve received numerous calls from listeners who wanted to know more about the band. Having them live in studio confirmed that these folks are the real deal. I hope they find the success they deserve.

"New band releases first CD"

By James Murray

July 21, 2009

They may be young, but the members of Old Man’s Beard already have a fair amount of musical experience between them.

Enough, at least, to have audiences stomping their feet when they bring their unique blend of folk, rock and reggae onto the stage wherever they perform.

Founded by long-time friends Jesse Clarke and Mike Shaver, who write most of the band’s material, as well as sharing vocals and guitar, the band has managed to bring together the talents of local musicians Leon Power on drums, Darrin Herting on bass and Stephanie Webster on lead vocals.

“We are still sort of feeling each other out, learning who can do what and where each other’s strengths lie,” says Clarke.

When pressed to explain how the band got its name, band members lean to vague answers.

Shaver makes veiled references to a type of lichen known by the same name that grows on trees in the North West, while Webster says that “some old men have cool beards.”

Mostly they agree that it’s more fun to let people make up their own stories about the name.”

Either way, Old Man’s Beard is serious about their music.

In a relatively short period of time together, the band has managed to put together a CD which they say was recorded “partly at people’s houses, at a Mexican cafe, and at the Five Corners Pentecostal Church.”

Called The River, the CD was mixed and mastered at the Factory Studio in Vancouver and is scheduled for release Friday, Sept. 4.

The band will celebrate this accomplishment with a CD release concert at the Old Dog Pub across from McGuire Lake.

Meanwhile, the band will be performing Saturday, July 25 at the Squilax Music Festival.

On Friday, July 31 and Thursday, Aug. 13, Old Man’s Beard will perform over the noon hour on the DIA- sponsored Lunch Box Stage at the Ross Street Plaza. They will also appear on the grass at Grindrod Park for Music by the River on Saturday, Aug. 8. - Salmon Arm Observer

"Old Man's Beard to play Grindrod"

Friday, July 31, 2009

Enderby & District Arts Council's fourth concert in this summer's Music by the River series features Old Man's Beard and takes place in the Grindrod Park on Saturday, August 8 at 7 p.m.

Grindrod is not hard to find; just look for the hubcaps. There are family-oriented events all day at the Grindrod Park as part of the Grindrod Days celebration. This year, to conclude the day-long events, they have hired what some think is the best little band in the Shuswap-Okanagan, a band that's going to go places - Old Man's Beard.

You may have heard them on the radio. Their "Tofino" has been getting airplay on CBC. They have spent the past couple of months in and out of Vancouver recording their first CD, which is now being mastered in Toronto and is eagerly awaited by OMB's growing number of fans.

Old Man's Beard is two singer-songwriters, Jesse Clarke from Thunder Bay and Mike Shaver from Burlington (and other places). They will be joined on the Grindrod stage in the Park by local singer Stephanie Webster, bass-player Peter Clark and outstanding local drummer Leon Power.

Jesse and Mike both play guitar and mandolin and write great music and lyrics. They are very entertaining and know how to engage their audience. With their boot-stompin', finger-snappin', knuckle-knockin', toe-tappin' country/folk/rock sound they were captured by the crowd at the July 1st WOW! concert in Salmon Arm and forced to play a 20-minute encore. People danced in groups, in couples and alone. It was that compelling.

So, if you attend only one free outdoor concert this summer, get yourself to Grindrod Recreation Park for 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, and if you forget to bring a lawn chair or blanket, don't worry, you may not need it. You will probably be dancing.

"Check out the Old Man's Beard"

From the the deepest recesses of British Columbia's southern interior, the group Old Man's Beard began as a project for friends Michael Shaver (vocals and guitar) and Jesse Clarke (vocals, guitar, mandolin). Since forming their songwriting partnership in early 2008, Mike and Jesse have toured and worked hard to create a terrific album of original music that showcases both a catchy folk rock sound and the spirit of what it is to be a British Columbian. As a duo they have been exciting audiences with their unique live show consisting of a blend of reggae, boot-stompin' folk, and rock and roll. Over the last few years, the duo has evolved into a five-piece unit that includes Darrin Herting (bass), Leon Power (drums), and Stephanie Webster (vocals and additional percussion). Together, this five piece has built a sound complete with rich, home brewed harmonies, catchy rhythms and streamlined guitar work. After a winter of writing and recording, the band has released its first album, 'The River' and are currently touring in support of the disc. <

Old Man's Beard have had their song 'Dawson Bound' featured on the popular television show Daily Planet. Since mid-July, 'Tofino' (the song I first heard of theirs) has received play on CBC radio's province-wide program, All Points West. The group recently performed as part of the 2009 Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival and participated in the 2009 British Columbia Interior Music Awards (BCIMA) as a performer and nominee in the Best New Artist category. Old Man's Beard clearly love playing music together and this love of music is definitely helping to grow their fan base beyond BC's boarders to all across Canada. I first heard them earlier today after my mom sent me the Tofino song that she had heard off the radio. I really liked the track and dug some more of their stuff off the cbc and off their myspace page

I really like the track Dawson Bound as well. The vocals on this track really seem to remind me of Brandon Boyd (Incubus) and that actually goes for the album as well. It is kind of an interesting mix of Incubus, Bedouin Soundclash, and the Fleet Foxes. The album is really good and totally catches the spirit of BC rock. I think this is a pretty awesome start for these guys from the interior and I hope this isn't the last we hear from them. If you like folk rock in the vein of the new folk revival that is happening then totally dig these guys, especially if you have dug the Fleet Foxes or Mumford & Sons articles that I have written lately.

"On the Eve of the BCIMA 2009 Awards"

Old Man’s Beard deserves national, if not international acclaim for its outstanding original music that is clever and fun to listen to and even more fun to dance to. In just a few months, this young band has attracted a legion of followers in the Shuswap and very likely in the communities where the band recently played during its first cross-Canada tour.
Their music is part of the new wave of folk-rock-reggae fusion sound made popular by musicians such as Joel Plaskett and Elliot Brood. Listening to Old Man’s Beard music makes me feel good and the tunes are infectious, in that the music stays inside my head, with the tunes and lyrics hanging in long after the songs are over.
Old Man’s Beard takes the best from each of the musical styles and by using soulful harmonies and skillful playing the band creates a sound that is unique and impressive. Of course the best way to experience Old Man’s Beard is to dance up close during a live show and feel their youthful energy pulse through your body with every beat. Because their music covers so many styles, it appeals to just about everyone.
Hopefully, the music industry will embrace this young band and we will be able to hear their music soon on mainstream radio as well as the alternative stations such as CBC Radio Three.

Bio

Old Man’s Beard are not old, are not all men, and do not all have beards. They are British Columbia's
unique blend of reggae, boot-stompin' folk, and rock and roll that have played their way into the hearts of
fans in Western Canada. The band is now bringing its well-placed harmonies and toe-tappin' rhythms to the
rest of the country en route to the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals conference in Ottawa.

Barely a year old, Old Man's Beard have released its debut album, The River, received a nomination for
Best New Artist at the BC Interior Music Awards, and performed for 4000 people as part of the Olympic
Torch Relay. The band has also conducted interviews on CBC Radio One, performed on-air on the Shore
104 in Vancouver and completed its summer of shows with a performance at Salmon Arm's Roots and
Blues Festival. The band is setting its sights on 2011 for writing and recording another album along with a
strong presence on the Canadian summer music festival circuit.
