"Let It Be Me: A Celebration of Women Songwriters"

Let It Be Me: A Celebration of Women Songwriters
Featuring Olivia Greer

Excerpts from review

January, 2003

...Let It Be Me is a celebration of women songwriters, and an autobiography, as "read through" an array of lyric expressionists in alternative song forms. As performed by Olivia Greer, a young woman with palpable performance presence, these lyrics mingle easily with autobiography; suffused with tender ironies.

"It’s about choice...the world we want to make, we have to choose to live now, in our own lives, with each other. And to do that, we have to undo the barriers that have been built into us by the world we live in. It’s about choosing that."...

...Olivia’s choice of songs, with their skillful use of personal address, connects to the audience, to listeners as individual confidants. The nature of the connection here is different than the nature in which the words of a poem or a story or play address the reader; here music says more than words alone can say…

...Olivia sings in the tradition of Nina Simone and Joan Baez, of Abbey Lincoln, and Si Kahn, songs that are deeply personal, that take the materials of everyday life to explore layers of significance and contradiction just below the surface. By their nature, they are part of a tradition that uses song and its relation to the body -- from lungs through chest, tongue and intonation -- to say more than words can say; to join heart and mind.

There is no leaving neither heart nor mind behind or at the door; with the heart, the mind and the voice conjoined, we never simply listen in one channel.

Bio

It's been a couple of years since an auspicious white lie led Olivia Greer to write her first song. But in that time, her work has been received with great enthusiasm by fans as well as fellow musicians. Whether she's singing a jazz-inflected love song, or rocking out a tune about revolution tinted with reggae beats, without fail Olivia offers evenings of music that no one wants to miss.

Born and raised in New York City, the story goes that Olivia sang before she could talk -- and serenaded family and friends with Christmas carols from the age of two. Classically trained, and with a background in musical theater, Olivia turned her attention to pop songwriting in late 2002, while she was making her cabaret debut at the famous New York club Don't Tell Mama.

Olivia's song Lacey & Jan was premiered in choral form in May 2003 by the New York Treble Singers, a world-renowned women's vocal ensemble. Her debut EP 4 Songs was released in spring of 2004 with great success and has led to continued performances around the New York City area, in venues which include Makor, Pianos, The Culture Project, The Lark Theatre Company and Rare.
