"one L with Half Dozen Brass Band Thursday, Oct. 16 @ Farm 255"

originally published October 17, 2008

"...in those living moments, when improvisation is treated as the guest of honor, an attentive listener cannot help but feel that s/he’s getting more than what’s entitled."

"...with One L, we have music under consideration that probably exists outside the realm of possibility of many of Athens residents' minds: A really nice Cuban-style “big band” – there are seven members, if I recall correctly (bass, guitar, drums, percussion, sax, sax/clarinet, and keys/percussion)."

"The nice thing about this group is the presence of guitar, which is often occupied with repetitive, rhythmic arpeggios, often providing a prominent sonic foundation for the harmonic exploration, and especially pleasing as a counterpoint to the horns and percussion, yet certainly a melodic leader and ornate soloist every now and then."

"Here we have a large group of musicians doing something not many (if any) others in town are capable of, and very much worth paying attention to. Especially if you like to dance – and not alone – ...as these bands were built to dance to."

Bio

Influenced by Arsenio Rodriguez, Orchestra Baobab and Jorge Ben to name a few, "one L" presents Latin rhythms incorporating electric guitar and a world of musical influence. "one L" was formed by Philip Kohnen in early 2006 after studying percussion and composition with Grammy Award Nominee Roberto Juan Rodriguez and studying "tres Cubano" with renowned "tresero" Benjamin Lapidus. Currently based in Athens, GA, the band is recording their first EP to be released in 2009.
