Bio
The Sound
Tracing an arc from early 80s new wave
and post-punk sounds to the present, Ones&Zeros combine dual male/female
vocals with gritty guitar riffs that can veer off along psychedelic and
sometimes orchestral paths.
The Ones&Zeros
sound is probably best categorized as Indie Rock in a post-punk vein. The music
can be rough around the edges, with slashing, distorted guitar riffs, driving
bass and often frenetic drumming. Or, sometimes, the songs can be quite the
opposite: i.e., quite spare and incorporating more acoustic instrumentation. A
key element in the bands sound is also their use of dual male/female vocals on
many songs.
History
Ones&Zeros initially took shape as a bedroom
recording project for Jason Maxwell in early 2012. After having been away from playing
in bands for a number of years, he returned to it that year at the prodding of
musician friends, and was immediately surprised by the amount of music that he
started to write. The steady stream of new music got him thinking that it would
be much more fun to record some of it with a proper band. So later that year,
he recruited some friends to record an EP that consisted of a selection of 5
songs from a collection that had grown to more than 60 by years end.
The self-titled EP was produced by Tyler Berrie and the band and was mastered
by Carl Saff in Chicago, IL. It was released officially in June 2013 and is
available online through many of the usual digital music distributors: inc. iTunes,
Amazon, Rhapsody, Spotify, and others. It is also currently receiving airplay
on Canadian campus radio stations and select US non-comm stations.
Early in 2013, the band's membership expanded and solidified to include:
Jason Maxwell (vocals; guitars) | Amanda Rawlings (vocals)
Greg Hennessey (guitars) | Michael Lauder (drums)
Lance White (keyboards) | Duncan Stewart (bass)
In September, the band recorded tracks for a second EP, The City Dont Care, that will be released in May 2014. The Vancouver Sun recently invited the band to participate in their Gastown Sessions video series. This short film will likely be released on April 24th, 2014. During the spring, the band will keep busy with performances in and around Vancouver or anywhere else they may be invited. A few of the songs from the new EP and all of the songs from the debut EP can be streamed on Soundcloud.
